Esdras 5
1 Et les prophètes, Aggée le prophète, et Zacharie, fils d’Iddo, prophétisèrent aux Juifs qui étaient en Juda et à Jérusalem, au nom du Dieu d’Israël.
Now the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, the son of Iddo, were preaching to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel.
2 Alors Zorobabel, fils de Shealthiel, et Jéshua, fils de Jotsadak, se levèrent et commencèrent à bâtir la maison de Dieu qui est à Jérusalem, et avec eux, les prophètes de Dieu qui les assistaient.
Then Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, got up and made a start at building the house of God at Jerusalem: and the prophets of God were with them, helping them.
3 En ce temps-là, Thathnaï, gouverneur de ce côté du fleuve, et Shethar-Boznaï, et leurs collègues, vinrent vers eux, et leur parlèrent ainsi: Qui vous a donné ordre de bâtir cette maison et d’achever cette muraille?
At the same time, Tattenai, ruler of the land across the river, and Shethar-bozenai, and their men, came to them and said, Who gave you orders to go on building this house and this wall?
4 Alors nous leur avons dit quels étaient les noms des hommes qui bâtissaient cet édifice.
Then they said these words to them: What are the names of the men who are at work on this building?
5 Et l’œil de leur Dieu était sur les anciens des Juifs; et ils ne les firent pas cesser jusqu’à ce que l’affaire parvienne à Darius; et alors ils répondirent par lettre à ce sujet.
But the eye of their God was on the chiefs of the Jews, and they did not make them give up working till the question had been put before Darius and an answer had come by letter about it.
6 Copie de la lettre que Thathnaï, gouverneur de ce côté du fleuve, et Shethar-Boznaï et ses collègues les Apharsakites, qui étaient de ce côté du fleuve, envoyèrent au roi Darius.
This is a copy of the letter which Tattenai, the ruler of the land across the river, and Shethar-bozenai and his friends the Apharsachites, living across the river, sent to Darius the king:
7 Ils lui envoyèrent un rapport dans lequel il était ainsi écrit: Au roi Darius, toute paix!
They sent him a letter saying, To Darius the king, all peace:
8 Qu’il soit connu du roi que nous sommes allés dans la province de Juda, à la maison du grand Dieu; et elle se bâtit avec de grandes pierres, et le bois se pose dans les murs; et cet ouvrage se poursuit avec zèle et prospère dans leurs mains.
This is to give the king word that we went into the land of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is made of great stones, and has its walls supported with wood, and the work is going on with industry, and they are doing it well.
9 Alors nous avons interrogé ces anciens, nous leur avons parlé ainsi: Qui vous a donné ordre de bâtir cette maison et d’achever cette muraille?
Then we said to the men responsible, who gave you authority for the building of this house and these walls?
10 Et nous leur avons aussi demandé leurs noms pour te les faire savoir, afin de t’écrire les noms des hommes qui sont les principaux parmi eux;
And we made request for their names, so that we might send you word, and give you the names of the men at the head of them.
11 et ils répondirent ainsi, disant: Nous sommes les serviteurs du Dieu des cieux et de la terre, et nous bâtissons la maison qui fut bâtie anciennement, il y a bien des années; et un grand roi d’Israël l’a bâtie et achevée.
And they made answer to us, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are building the house which was put up in times long past and was designed and made complete by a great king of Israel.
12 Mais quand nos pères provoquèrent le Dieu des cieux, il les livra en la main de Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, le Chaldéen, et il détruisit cette maison et transporta le peuple à Babylone.
But when the God of heaven was moved to wrath by our fathers, he gave them up into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, the Chaldaean, who sent destruction on this house and took the people away into Babylon.
13 Mais la première année de Cyrus, roi de Babylone, le roi Cyrus donna ordre de bâtir cette maison de Dieu.
But in the first year of Cyrus, king of Babylon, Cyrus the king gave an order for the building of this house of God;
14 Et aussi les ustensiles d’or et d’argent de la maison de Dieu, que Nebucadnetsar a sortis du temple qui était à Jérusalem et a emportés dans le temple de Babylone, le roi Cyrus les sortit du temple de Babylone, et les livra au nommé Sheshbatsar, qu’il avait fait gouverneur;
And the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took from the Temple which was in Jerusalem, and put into the house of his god in Babylon, these Cyrus the king took from the house of his god in Babylon, and gave to one named Sheshbazzar, whom he had made ruler;
15 et il lui dit: Prends ces ustensiles, va, place-les dans le temple qui est à Jérusalem, et qu’on bâtisse la maison de Dieu sur son emplacement.
And he said to him, Go, take these vessels, and put them in the Temple in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be put up again in its place.
16 Alors ce Sheshbatsar est venu et a posé les fondements de la maison de Dieu qui est à Jérusalem, et depuis lors jusqu’à présent elle se bâtit; mais elle n’est pas achevée.
Then this same Sheshbazzar came and put the house of God in Jerusalem on its bases: and from that time till now the building has been going on, but it is still not complete.
17 Et maintenant, s’il semble bon au roi, qu’on recherche dans la maison des trésors du roi, qui est là à Babylone, s’il est vrai que, de par le roi Cyrus, ordre a été donné de bâtir cette maison de Dieu à Jérusalem; et que le roi nous envoie sa volonté sur cela.
So now, if it seems good to the king, let search be made in the king's store-house at Babylon, to see if it is true that an order was given by Cyrus the king for the building of this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send us word of his pleasure in connection with this business.
