Esdras 10

1 Et comme Esdras priait et faisait sa confession, pleurant et se prosternant devant la maison de Dieu, il se rassembla vers lui, d’Israël, une très grande congrégation d’hommes et de femmes et d’enfants, car le peuple pleurait beaucoup.

Now when 'Ezra prayed, and when he made his confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there gathered themselves unto him out of Israel a very large assembly of men and women and children; for the people wept exceedingly much.

2 Et Shecania, fils de Jekhiel, des fils d’Élam, prit la parole et dit à Esdras: Nous avons été infidèles à notre Dieu, et nous avons pris des femmes étrangères d’entre les peuples du pays. Mais maintenant, il y a espérance pour Israël à cet égard.

Thereupon commenced Shechanyah the son of Jechiel, of the sons of 'Elam, and said unto 'Ezra, we have indeed trespassed against our God, and have brought home strange wives of the nations of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.

3 Et maintenant, faisons alliance avec notre Dieu pour renvoyer toutes les femmes et ceux qui sont nés d’elles, selon le conseil de mon seigneur et de ceux qui tremblent aux commandements de notre Dieu, et qu’il soit fait selon la loi.

And now let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the direction of the Lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God: and let it be done according to the law.

4 Lève-toi, car la chose repose sur toi, et nous serons avec toi; sois fort et agis.

Arise; for this matter is obligatory upon thee; and we will be with thee: be strong, and do it.

5 Et Esdras se leva, et il fit jurer aux chefs des sacrificateurs, des lévites, et de tout Israël, d’agir selon cette parole; et ils jurèrent.

Then arose 'Ezra, and caused the princes of the priests, the Levites, and of all Israel, to swear to do according to this word. And they swore.

6 Et Esdras se leva de devant la maison de Dieu, et alla dans la chambre de Jokhanan, fils d’Éliashib; et il entra là: il ne mangea point de pain et ne but point d’eau, car il menait deuil sur le péché de ceux qui avaient été transportés.

Then arose 'Ezra from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jochanan the son of Elyashib; and he went thither without having eaten bread, or having drunk water; for he was mourning because of the trespass of the exiles.

7 Et on fit passer en Juda et à Jérusalem un appel à tous les fils de la transportation de se rassembler à Jérusalem,

And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the exile, to gather themselves together at Jerusalem;

8 et pour que quiconque ne viendrait pas dans les trois jours selon le conseil des chefs et des anciens, tous ses biens soient confisqués, et que lui-même soit séparé de la congrégation de ceux qui avaient été transportés.

And that whosoever should not come within three days, according to the resolve of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be devoted, and himself separated from the congregation of the exiles.

9 Et tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin se rassemblèrent à Jérusalem dans les trois jours: c’était le neuvième mois, le vingtième [jour] du mois; et tout le peuple était assis dans la place de la maison de Dieu, tremblant à cause de cette affaire et à cause des pluies.

Then were all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together unto Jerusalem within three days: it was in the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the open place before the house of God, trembling because of this matter, and by reason of the showers of rain.

10 Et Esdras, le sacrificateur, se leva et leur dit: Vous avez été infidèles, et vous avez pris des femmes étrangères, pour ajouter à la culpabilité d’Israël.

And 'Ezra the priest rose up, and said unto them, Ye have acted unfaithfully, and have brought home strange wives, to increase yet more the guiltiness of Israel.

11 Et maintenant, faites confession à l’Éternel, le Dieu de vos pères, et faites ce qui lui est agréable, et séparez-vous des peuples du pays et des femmes étrangères.

Now therefore make confession unto the Lord the God of your fathers, and do his will; and separate yourselves from the nations of the earth, and from the strange wives.

12 Et toute la congrégation répondit et dit à haute voix: Oui, à nous de faire selon tes paroles;

Then answered all the assembly and said with a loud voice, So be it: according to thy word it is our duty to do.

13 mais le peuple est nombreux, et c’est la saison des pluies, et il n’y a pas moyen de se tenir dehors; et ce n’est pas l’œuvre d’un jour ni de deux, car nous avons grandement péché dans cette affaire.

But the people are many, and it is the rainy season, and we have not the strength to remain in the street, nor is this a work for one day or for two days; for we are many that have transgressed in this matter.

14 Que nos chefs donc, pendant cette affaire, se tiennent là pour toute la congrégation, et que tous ceux qui, dans nos villes, ont pris des femmes étrangères, viennent à des époques déterminées, et avec eux les anciens de chaque ville et ses juges, jusqu’à ce que l’ardeur de la colère de notre Dieu soit détournée de nous.

Let however our princes stand forward for all the congregation, and let all those in our cities who have brought home strange wives come at appointed times, and with them the elders of each and every city, and its judges, until the fierce wrath of our God be turned away from us for this whole matter.

15 Seuls, Jonathan, fils d’Asçaël, et Jakhzia, fils de Thikva, s’opposèrent à cela; et Meshullam, et Shabthaï, le lévite, les appuyèrent.

Only Jonathan the son of 'Assahel and Jachzeyah the son of Thikvah withstood this [proposal]: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite assisted them.

16 Et les fils de la transportation firent ainsi. Et Esdras, le sacrificateur, et des hommes qui étaient chefs des pères, furent séparés selon leurs maisons de pères, et tous par leurs noms. Et ils s’assirent le premier jour du dixième mois pour examiner l’affaire;

And the children of the exile did so. And then were set apart 'Ezra the priest, [and] certain chiefs of the divisions, for their family divisions, and all of them [designated] by their names; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.

17 et, le premier jour du premier mois, ils en eurent fini avec tous les hommes qui avaient pris des femmes étrangères.

And they made an end with all, with the men that had brought home strange wives, not before the first day of the first month.

18 Et, parmi les fils des sacrificateurs, il s’en trouva qui avaient pris des femmes étrangères: des fils de Jéshua, fils de Jotsadak, et de ses frères: Maascéïa, et Éliézer, et Jarib, et Guedalia.

And there were found among the sons of the priests that had brought home strange wives, namely, of the sons of Jeshua' the son of Jozadak, and his brethren: Ma'asseyah, and Eli'ezer, and Jarib, and Gedalyah.

19 Et ils s’engagèrent à renvoyer leurs femmes, et ils offrirent pour leur faute, un bélier du troupeau comme offrande pour le délit.

And they gave their hand to put away their wives, and being guilty, [they offered] a ram of the flock for their trespass.

20 Et des fils d’Immer: Hanani et Zebadia;

And of the sons of Immer: Chanani, and Zebadyah.

21 et des fils de Harim, Maascéïa, et Élie, et Shemahia, et Jekhiel, et Ozias;

And of the sons of Charim: Ma'asseyah, and Elijah, and Shema'yah, and Jechiel, and 'Uzziyah.

22 et des fils de Pashkhur, Élioénaï, Maascéïa, Ismaël, Nethaneël, Jozabad et Elhasça.

And of the sons of Pashchur: Elyo'enai, Ma'asseyah. Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and El'assah.

23 Et des lévites: Jozabad, et Shimhi, et Kélaïa (c’est Kelita), Pethakhia, Juda, et Éliézer.

Also of the Levites: Jozabad, and Shim'i, and Kelayan, the same is Kelita, Pethachyah, Judah, and Eli'ezer.

24 Et des chantres: Éliashib. Et des portiers: Shallum, et Télem, et Uri.

And of the singers, Elyashib; and of the gate-keepers, Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.

25 Et de ceux d’Israël: des fils de Parhosh, Ramia, et Jizzija, et Malkija, et Mijamin, et Éléazar, et Malkija, et Benaïa;

And of Israel: Of the sons of Par'osh, Ramyah, and Yizziyah, and Malkiyah, and Miyamin, and El'azar, and Malkiyah, and Benayah.

26 et des fils d’Élam, Matthania, Zacharie, et Jekhiel, et Abdi, et Jerémoth, et Élie;

And of the sons of 'Elam; Matthanyah, Zecharyah, and Jechiel, and 'Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Eliyah.

27 et des fils de Zatthu, Élioénaï, Éliashib, Matthania, et Jerémoth, et Zabad, et Aziza;

And of the sons of Zatthu: Elyo'enai, Elyashib, Matthanyah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and 'Aziza.

28 et des fils de Bébaï, Jokhanan, Hanania, Zabbaï, Athlaï;

And of the sons of Bebai: Jehochanan, Chananyah, Zabbai, and 'Athlai.

29 et des fils de Bani, Meshullam, Malluc et Adaïa, Jashub, et Sheal, et Ramoth;

And of the sons of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, and 'Adayah, Jashub, and Sheal, and Ramoth.

30 et des fils de Pakhath-Moab, Adna et Kelal, Benaïa, Maascéïa, Matthania, Betsaleël, et Binnuï, et Manassé;

And of the sons of Pachath-moab: 'Adna, and Kelal, Benayah, Ma'asseyah, Matthanyah, Bezalel, and Binnui, and Menasseh.

31 et les fils de Harim, Éliézer, Jishija, Malkija, Shemahia, Siméon,

And of the sons of Charim: Eli'ezer, Yishiyah, Malkiyah, Shema'yah, Shim'on,

32 Benjamin, Malluc, Shemaria;

Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemaryah.

33 des fils de Hashum, Mathnaï, Matthattha, Zabad, Éliphéleth, Jerémaï, Manassé, Shimhi;

Of the sons of Chashum: Matthenai, Matthathah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Menasseh, and Shim'i.

34 des fils de Bani, Maadaï, Amram et Uel,

Of the sons of Bani: Ma'adai, 'Amram, and Uel,

35 Benaïa, Bédia, Keluhu,

Benayah, Bedeyah, Keluhu,

36 Vania, Merémoth, Éliashib,

Vanyah, Meremoth, Elyashib,

37 Matthania, Mathnaï, et Jaasçaï,

Matthanyah, Matthenai, and Ja'assai,

38 et Bani, et Binnuï, Shimhi,

And Bani, and Binnui, and Shim'i,

39 et Shélémia, et Nathan, et Adaïa,

And Shelemyah, and Nathan, and 'Adayah,

40 Macnadbaï, Shashaï, Sharaï,

Machnadbai, Shashai, Sharai,

41 Azareël et Shélémia, Shemaria,

'Asar'el, and Shelemyahu, Shemaryah,

42 Shallum, Amaria, Joseph;

Shallum, Amaryah, and Joseph.

43 des fils de Nebo, Jehiel, Matthithia, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddaï et Joël, Benaïa.

Of the sons of Nebo: Je'iel, Matthithyah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, and Joel, Benayah.

44 Tous ceux-ci avaient pris des femmes étrangères, et il y en avait parmi eux dont les femmes avaient eu des enfants.

All these had taken strange wives; and some of them had wives by whom they had children.
