Deutéronome 25

1 Quand il y aura une contestation entre des hommes, et qu’ils viendront devant la justice et qu’on les jugera, on déclarera juste le juste, et on déclarera méchant le méchant.

“When there is a strife between men, and they have come near to the judgment, and they have judged, and declared righteous the righteous, and declared wrong the wrongdoer,

2 Et s’il arrive que le méchant ait mérité d’être battu, le juge le fera mettre par terre et battre devant lui d’un certain nombre [de coups], selon la mesure de sa méchanceté.

then it has come to pass, if the wrongdoer is to be struck, that the judge has caused him to fall down, and [one] has struck him in his presence, according to the sufficiency of his wrongdoing, by number;

3 Il le fera battre de 40 [coups], sans les dépasser, de peur que s’il continuait à le battre de beaucoup de coups outre ceux-là, ton frère ne soit méprisable à tes yeux.

he strikes him forty [times]; he is not adding, lest he is adding to strike him above these many stripes, and your brother be lightly esteemed in your eyes.

4 Tu n’emmuselleras pas le bœuf, pendant qu’il foule [le grain].

You do not muzzle an ox in its threshing.

5 Quand des frères habiteront ensemble, et que l’un d’entre eux mourra, et qu’il n’aura pas de fils, la femme du mort n’ira pas s’allier dehors à un homme étranger; son lévir viendra vers elle, et la prendra pour femme et s’acquittera envers elle de son devoir de lévir.

When brothers dwell together, and one of them has died and has no son, the wife of the dead is not given to a strange man; her husband’s brother goes in to her, and has taken her to him for a wife, and performs the duty of her husband’s brother;

6 Et il arrivera que le premier-né qu’elle enfantera succédera au nom du frère mort, et son nom ne sera pas effacé d’Israël.

and it has been, the firstborn which she bears rises for the name of his dead brother, and his name is not wiped away out of Israel.

7 Et s’il ne plaît pas à l’homme de prendre sa belle-sœur, sa belle-sœur montera à la porte vers les anciens, et dira: Mon lévir refuse de relever le nom de son frère en Israël, il ne veut pas s’acquitter envers moi de son lévirat.

And if the man does not delight to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife has gone up to the gate, to the elderly, and said, My husband’s brother is refusing to raise up a name for his brother in Israel; he has not been willing to perform the duty of my husband’s brother;

8 Et les anciens de sa ville l’appelleront, et lui parleront; et s’il tient ferme, et dit: Il ne me plaît pas de la prendre,

and [the] elderly of his city have called for him, and spoken to him, and he has stood and said, I have no desire to take her.

9 alors sa belle-sœur s’approchera de lui devant les yeux des anciens, et lui ôtera la sandale de son pied, et lui crachera à la figure, et elle répondra et dira: C’est ainsi qu’il sera fait à l’homme qui ne bâtira pas la maison de son frère.

Then his brother’s wife has drawn near to him before the eyes of the elderly, and drawn his shoe from off his foot, and spat in his face, and answered and said, Thus it is done to the man who does not build up the house of his brother;

10 Et son nom sera appelé en Israël la maison du déchaussé.

and his name has been called in Israel, The house of him whose shoe is drawn off.

11 Si des hommes ont une rixe l’un avec l’autre, et que la femme de l’un s’approche pour délivrer son mari de la main de celui qui le frappe, et qu’elle étende sa main et saisisse celui-ci par les parties honteuses,

When men strive together with one another, and the wife of one has drawn near to deliver her husband out of the hand of his striker, and has put forth her hand, and laid hold on his private parts,

12 tu lui couperas la main: ton œil ne l’épargnera point.

then you have cut off her hand; your eye does not spare.

13 Tu n’auras pas dans ton sac deux poids différents, un grand et un petit;

You do not have [both] a great stone and a small stone in your bag.

14 tu n’auras pas dans ta maison deux éphas différents, un grand et un petit.

You do not have a great ephah and a small ephah in your house.

15 Tu auras un poids exact et juste, tu auras un épha exact et juste, afin que tes jours soient prolongés sur la terre que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne.

You have a complete and just stone, [and] you have a complete and just ephah, so that they prolong your days on the ground which your God YHWH is giving to you;

16 Car quiconque fait ces choses, quiconque pratique l’iniquité, est en abomination à l’Éternel, ton Dieu.

for anyone doing these things, anyone doing iniquity, [is] an abomination [to] your God YHWH.

17 Souviens-toi de ce que t’a fait Amalek, en chemin, quand vous sortiez d’Égypte:

Remember that which Amalek has done to you in the way in your going out from Egypt,

18 comment il te rencontra dans le chemin, et tomba en queue sur toi, sur tous les faibles qui se traînaient après toi, lorsque tu étais las et harassé, et ne craignit pas Dieu.

that he has met you in the way, and strikes among you all those feeble behind you (when you [were] weary and fatigued), and is not fearing God.

19 Et quand l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’aura donné du repos de tous tes ennemis à l’entour, dans le pays que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne en héritage pour le posséder, il arrivera que tu effaceras la mémoire d’Amalek de dessous les cieux: tu ne l’oublieras pas.

And it has been, in your God YHWH giving rest to you from all your surrounding enemies, in the land which your God YHWH is giving to you [for] an inheritance to possess it, you blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens—you do not forget.”
