2 Chroniques 19
1 Et Josaphat, roi de Juda, s’en retourna dans sa maison, en paix, à Jérusalem.
When King Jehoshaphat was returning safely to his palace in Jerusalem,
2 Et Jéhu, fils de Hanani, le voyant, sortit au-devant de lui, et dit au roi Josaphat: Aides-tu au méchant, et aimes-tu ceux qui haïssent l’Éternel? À cause de cela il y a colère sur toi de la part de l’Éternel.
the prophet Jehu, the son of [the prophet] Hanani, went out of the city to meet the king, and said to him, “It was not right for you to help a wicked man and to love those who hate Yahweh. Because of what you have done, Yahweh is angry with you.
3 Cependant il s’est trouvé de bonnes choses en toi, car tu as ôté du pays les ashères, et tu as appliqué ton cœur à rechercher Dieu.
But you have done some good things; you got rid of the poles in this country for [worshiping the goddess] Asherah, and you have strongly determined to do what pleases God.”
4 Et Josaphat habita à Jérusalem. Et de nouveau il sortit parmi le peuple, depuis Beër-Shéba jusqu’à la montagne d’Éphraïm; et il les ramena à l’Éternel, le Dieu de leurs pères.
Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem. But [one time], like he had done once previously, he went out among all the people in the country, from Beersheba [city in the far south] to the hilly area of [the tribe of] Ephraim [in the far north], and he convinced them to return to [worshiping] Yahweh, the God whom their ancestors [worshiped].
5 Et il établit des juges dans le pays, dans toutes les villes fortes de Juda, de ville en ville.
He appointed judges throughout Judah, in each of the cities that had walls around them.
6 Et il dit aux juges: Voyez ce que vous ferez; car ce n’est pas pour l’homme que vous jugerez, mais pour l’Éternel, et il sera avec vous dans ce qui concerne le jugement.
He told them, “Make your decisions carefully, because you are judging cases not [in order] to [please] people but to [please] Yahweh. And he will be watching you whenever you make a decision.
7 Et maintenant, que la frayeur de l’Éternel soit sur vous: prenez garde en agissant; car auprès de l’Éternel, notre Dieu, il n’y a point d’iniquité, ni acception de personnes, ni acceptation de présents.
So now revere Yahweh, and judge cases carefully, [and do not forget that] Yahweh our God never acts unjustly, and he never does what people want because of their offering him money; he never accepts bribes.”
8 Et à Jérusalem aussi, Josaphat établit des lévites, et des sacrificateurs, et des chefs des pères d’Israël, pour le jugement de l’Éternel et pour les procès. Et ils étaient revenus à Jérusalem.
In Jerusalem also, Jehoshaphat appointed some priests and other descendants of Levi and some leaders of Israeli families [to be judges]. He told them to do what Yahweh’s laws said was right when they settled disputes. Those men lived in Jerusalem.
9 Et il leur commanda, disant: Vous agirez ainsi dans la crainte de l’Éternel, avec fidélité et d’un cœur parfait.
He told them this: “You must always do your work faithfully, revering Yahweh.
10 Et quelque procès qui vienne devant vous de la part de vos frères qui habitent dans leurs villes, entre sang et sang, entre loi et commandement, statuts et ordonnances, vous les avertirez afin qu’ils ne se rendent pas coupables envers l’Éternel, et qu’il n’y ait pas de la colère contre vous et contre vos frères: vous agirez ainsi, et vous ne vous rendrez pas coupables.
In every dispute that your fellow Israelis who live in the cities want you to settle, you must warn them to not sin against Yahweh [by telling lies during the trial]. If you do not warn them, God will punish both you and your fellow Israelis. If you warn them, you will not be sinning. You must warn them whether [someone has accused them] of murdering someone, or of disobeying some other law or command or decree [of Yahweh].
11 Et voici, Amaria, le principal sacrificateur, est [préposé] sur vous dans toutes les affaires de l’Éternel, et Zebadia, fils d’Ismaël, prince de la maison de Juda, dans toutes les affaires du roi; et vous avez devant vous, pour officiers, les lévites. Fortifiez-vous, et agissez, et l’Éternel sera avec l’[homme] de bien.
Amariah the Supreme Priest will supervise you in any matter that Yahweh is concerned about, and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the leader of the tribe of Judah, will supervise you in any matter that I am responsible for. And the descendants of Levi will assist you. Act courageously, and I pray that Yahweh will help those who do their work well.”
