1 Samuel 9
1 Et il y avait un homme de Benjamin, et son nom était Kis, homme fort et vaillant, fils d’Abiel, fils de Tseror, fils de Becorath, fils d’Aphiakh, fils d’un Benjaminite;
Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name, was Kish—son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, son of a Benjamite, —a mighty man of valour;
2 et il avait un fils, et son nom était Saül, homme d’élite et beau; et il n’y avait aucun des fils d’Israël qui soit plus beau que lui; il était plus grand que tout le peuple, depuis les épaules en haut.
and, he, had a son, whose name, was Saul, a choice young man and of noble appearance, and there was not a man of the sons of Israel, more noble than he, —from his shoulders and upwards, was he taller than any of the people.
3 Et les ânesses de Kis, père de Saül, s’étaient perdues; et Kis dit à Saül, son fils: Prends, je te prie, avec toi un des jeunes hommes, et lève-toi, va, cherche les ânesses.
Now there had gone astray asses belonging to Kish, Saul’s father, —so Kish said unto Saul his son—I pray thee, take with thee one of the young men, and arise—go, seek the asses.
4 Et il passa par la montagne d’Éphraïm, et passa par le pays de Shalisha; et ils ne les trouvèrent pas; et ils passèrent par le pays de Shaalim, mais elles n’y étaient pas; et il passa par le pays de Benjamin, mais ils ne les trouvèrent pas.
And he passed through the hill country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they found them not, —then passed they through the land of Shaalim, and they were not there, then passed he through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.
5 Quand ils furent venus dans le pays de Tsuph, Saül dit à son serviteur qui était avec lui: Viens, et retournons-nous-en, de peur que mon père n’ait cessé de penser aux ânesses, et qu’il ne soit en peine de nous.
They, had come into the land of Zuph when, Saul, said to his young man who was with him, Come! and let us return; lest my father leave off [caring] for the asses, and be concerned for us.
6 Et il lui dit: Voici, je te prie, il y a un homme de Dieu dans cette ville, et c’est un homme considéré; tout ce qu’il dit arrive infailliblement: allons-y maintenant, peut-être nous enseignera-t-il le chemin par lequel nous devons aller.
And he said to him: Lo! I pray thee, a man of God, [liveth] in this city, and, the man, is held in honour, all that he saith, surely cometh to pass. Now, let us go thither; peradventure he may tell us our way, whereon we should have gone.
7 Et Saül dit à son serviteur: Mais si nous y allons, que porterons-nous à l’homme? car le pain manque dans nos sacs, et il n’y a pas de présent à porter à l’homme de Dieu. Qu’avons-nous avec nous?
Then said Saul to his young man: Behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man, for, the bread, hath failed from our sacks, and, present, there is none to bring to the man of God, —what is there with us?
8 Et le serviteur répondit de nouveau à Saül et dit: Voici, il se trouve que j’ai en main le quart d’un sicle d’argent, et je le donnerai à l’homme de Dieu, et il nous enseignera notre chemin.
And the young man again answered Saul, and said—Lo! there is found in my hand, the fourth part of a shekel of silver, —which thou canst give to the man of God, and he will tell us our way.
9 (Autrefois, en Israël, un homme, quand il allait consulter Dieu, disait ainsi: Venez, et allons vers le voyant. Car celui qu’on appelle prophète aujourd’hui, se nommait autrefois le voyant.)
Beforetime, in Israel, thus, said a man when he went to enquire of God, Come and let us go as far as the seer, —for, the prophet of to-day, used to be called, beforetime, the seer.
10 Et Saül dit à son serviteur: Tu dis bien; viens, allons. Et ils allèrent à la ville où était l’homme de Dieu.
And Saul said unto his young man, Good, is thy word, come! let us go! So they went unto the city, where the man of God was.
11 Comme ils montaient la montée de la ville, ils trouvèrent des jeunes filles qui sortaient pour puiser de l’eau, et ils leur dirent: Le voyant est-il ici?
They were going up the ascent of the city, when they found young women, coming out to draw water, —so they said unto these, Is, the seer, in this place?
12 Et elles leur répondirent et dirent: Il y est; le voilà devant toi: hâte-toi maintenant, car aujourd’hui il est venu à la ville, parce que le peuple a aujourd’hui un sacrifice sur le haut lieu.
And the young women answered them and said: He is, lo! before you now, even as, to-day, hath he entered the city, for the people have a sacrifice, to-day, in the high place.
13 Aussitôt que vous serez entrés dans la ville, vous le trouverez, avant qu’il monte au haut lieu pour manger; car le peuple ne mange pas, jusqu’à ce qu’il soit venu, parce que c’est lui qui bénit le sacrifice; après cela, les conviés mangent. Et maintenant, montez, car vous le trouverez précisément aujourd’hui.
As ye enter the city, so, shall ye surely find him, ere yet he shall go up to the high place to eat, for the people will not eat until he hath come, for, he, doth bless the sacrifice, after that, will they eat who have been bidden. Now, therefore, go up, for, about this very time, shall ye surely find him.
14 Et ils montèrent à la ville. Comme ils entraient dans la ville, voilà Samuel qui sortait au-devant d’eux pour monter au haut lieu.
So they went up into the city. As they were entering into the midst of the city, lo! Samuel, coming out over against them, to ascend the high place.
15 Or, un jour avant que Saül vienne, l’Éternel avait averti Samuel, disant:
Now, Yahweh, had unveiled the ear of Samuel, —one day before Saul came, saying:
16 Demain, à cette heure, je t’enverrai un homme du pays de Benjamin, et tu l’oindras pour être prince sur mon peuple Israël; et il sauvera mon peuple de la main des Philistins; car j’ai regardé mon peuple, car son cri est parvenu jusqu’à moi.
About this time to-morrow, will I send unto thee, a man out of the land of Benjamin, whom thou shalt anoint, to be leader over my people Israel, and he shall save my people, out of the hand of the Philistines, —for I have looked upon the oppression, because their outcry hath come in unto me.
17 Et comme Samuel vit Saül, l’Éternel lui répondit: Voilà l’homme dont je t’ai parlé; c’est lui qui dominera sur mon peuple.
And, when, Samuel, beheld Saul, Yahweh, answered him, Lo! the man, of whom I said unto thee, Here, is one shall control my people.
18 Et Saül s’approcha de Samuel, au milieu de la porte, et [lui] dit: Je te prie, montre-moi où est la maison du voyant.
And Saul drew near unto Samuel, in the midst of the gate, —and said—I pray thee, do tell me, where is the house of the seer?
19 Et Samuel répondit à Saül et dit: Moi, je suis le voyant; monte devant moi au haut lieu, et vous mangerez avec moi aujourd’hui, et le matin je te laisserai aller; et je te déclarerai tout ce qui est dans ton cœur.
And Samuel answered Saul, and said—I, am, the seer! Go up before me, to the high place, so shall ye eat with me, to-day, —and I will let thee go in the morning, and, all that is in thy heart, will I tell thee.
20 Et quant aux ânesses que tu as perdues, il y a aujourd’hui trois jours, n’en sois pas en peine, car elles sont trouvées. Et vers qui est [tourné] tout le désir d’Israël? N’est-ce pas vers toi et vers toute la maison de ton père?
And, as for the asses that went astray from thee three days ago, do not regard them, for they are found, —but to whom belongeth all that is desirable in Israel? is it not to thee, and to all the house of thy father?
21 Et Saül répondit et dit: Ne suis-je pas Benjaminite, de la plus petite des tribus d’Israël? et ma famille n’est-elle pas la moindre de toutes les familles de la tribu de Benjamin? Et pourquoi me dis-tu de telles choses?
Then answered Saul, and said—Am not I, a man of Benjamin, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and [is not], my family, the poorest of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Wherefore, then, hast thou spoken unto me of such a thing as this?
22 Et Samuel prit Saül et son jeune homme, et les fit entrer dans la salle, et leur donna place à la tête des invités; et ils étaient environ 30 hommes.
And Samuel took Saul and his young man, and brought them into the guest-chamber, —and gave them a place at the head of them who were bidden, they being about thirty persons.
23 Et Samuel dit au cuisinier: Donne la portion que je t’ai donnée, dont je t’ai dit: Serre-la par-devers toi.
And Samuel said to the cook, Set on the portion that I gave thee, —of which I said unto thee, Put it by thee.
24 Et le cuisinier leva l’épaule, et ce qui était dessus, et il la mit devant Saül. Et [Samuel] dit: Voici ce qui a été réservé; mets-le devant toi [et] mange; car cela a été gardé pour toi, pour le temps fixé, lorsque j’ai dit: J’inviterai le peuple. Et Saül mangea avec Samuel ce jour-là.
And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and placed it before Saul, and said—Lo! the part reserved! Set it before thee [and] eat, for, unto the time appointed, hath it been kept for thee, since the time that I said, The people, have I bidden. So Saul did eat with Samuel, on that day.
25 Et ils descendirent du haut lieu dans la ville, et [Samuel] parla avec Saül sur le toit.
And, when they had come down from the high place into the city, he spread a couch for Saul upon the house-top, and he lay down.
26 Et ils se levèrent de bonne heure. Et comme l’aurore se levait, Samuel appela Saül sur le toit, disant: Lève-toi, et je te laisserai aller. Et Saül se leva, et ils sortirent les deux dehors, lui et Samuel.
And it came to pass, at the uprisings of the dawn, that Samuel called unto Saul on the house-top, saying, Arise! that I may send thee away. So Saul arose, and they two, he and Samuel, went forth abroad.
27 Comme ils descendaient au bout de la ville, Samuel dit à Saül: Dis au jeune homme qu’il passe devant nous (et il passa); et toi, arrête-toi maintenant, et je te ferai entendre la parole de Dieu.
As they were going down the end of the city, Samuel, said unto Saul—Bid the young man, that he pass on before us, (and he passed on) but, thou, stand still where thou art, that I may let thee hear the word of God.
