Proverbes 24
1 Ne porte pas envie aux hommes méchants, et ne désire pas d’être avec eux.
Be not thou envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them.
2 Car leur cœur médite la violence, et leurs lèvres ne profèrent que le malheur. Avantages pratiques de la sagesse.
For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.
3 C’est par la sagesse qu’une maison s’élève, et par l’intelligence qu’elle s’affermit.
Through wisdom is a house builded; and by understanding it is established;
4 C’est par la science que l’intérieur se remplit, de tous les biens précieux et agréables.
And by knowledge are the chambers filled with all precious and pleasant riches.
5 Un homme sage est plein de force, et celui qui a de la science montre une grande puissance.
A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.
6 Car avec la prudence tu conduiras la guerre, et le salut est dans le grand nombre des conseillers.
For with wise advice thou shalt make thy war; and in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
7 La sagesse est trop haute pour l’insensé; il n’ouvre pas la bouche à la porte de la ville. L’intrigant.
Wisdom is as unattainable to a fool as corals; he openeth not his mouth in the gate.
8 Celui qui pense à faire le mal s’appelle un artisan d’intrigues. L’insensé.
He that deviseth to do evil, men shall call him a mischievous person.
9 Le dessein de l’insensé, c’est le péché, et le railleur est en abomination parmi les hommes. L’indolent.
The thought of foolishness is sin; and the scorner is an abomination to men.
10 Si tu te montres faible au jour de la détresse, ta force n’est que faiblesse. Porter secours aux malheureux opprimés.
If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small indeed.
11 Délivre ceux qu’on traîne à la mort; ceux qui vont en chancelant au massacre, sauve-les!
Deliver them that are drawn unto death; and those that are ready to be slain wilt thou forbear to rescue?
12 Si tu dis: « Mais! Nous ne le savions pas! » Celui qui pèse les cœurs ne le voit-il pas? Celui qui veille sur ton âme ne le connaît-il pas, et ne rendra-t-il pas à chacun selon ses œuvres?
If thou sayest: 'Behold, we knew not this', doth not He that weigheth the hearts consider it? And He that keepeth thy soul, doth not He know it? And shall not He render to every man according to his works?
13 Mon fils, mange du miel, car il est bon; un rayon de miel est doux à ton palais.
My son, eat thou honey, for it is good, and the honeycomb is sweet to thy taste;
14 Sache que la sagesse est la même chose pour ton âme; si tu l’acquiers, il est un avenir, et ton espérance ne sera pas frustrée.
So know thou wisdom to be unto thy soul; if thou hast found it, then shall there be a future, and thy hope shall not be cut off.
15 Ne tends pas, ô méchant, des embûches à la demeure du juste, et ne dévaste pas le lieu où il repose;
Lie not in wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous, spoil not his resting-place;
16 car sept fois le juste tombe, et il se relève, mais les méchants sont précipités dans le malheur.
For a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again, but the wicked stumble under adversity.
17 Si ton ennemi tombe, ne te réjouis pas, et que ton cœur ne se réjouisse pas de sa ruine,
Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thy heart be glad when he stumbleth;
18 de peur que Yahweh ne le voie, que cela soit mauvais à ses yeux, et qu’il ne détourne de lui sa colère.
Lest the LORD see it, and it displease Him, and He turn away His wrath from him.
19 Ne t’irrite pas à cause des méchants, ne porte pas envie aux pervers,
Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious at the wicked;
20 car il n’y a point d’avenir pour celui qui fait le mal, et la lampe des méchants s’éteindra.
For there will be no future to the evil man, the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
21 Mon fils, crains Yahweh et le roi; ne te mêle pas avec les hommes remuants;
My son, fear thou the LORD and the king, and meddle not with them that are given to change;
22 car soudain surgira leur malheur, et qui connaît la ruine des uns et des autres?
For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin from them both?
23 Ce qui suit vient encore des sages: Il n’est pas bon, dans les jugements, d’avoir égard aux personnes.
These also are sayings of the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.
24 Celui qui dit aux méchants: « Tu es juste », les peuples le maudissent, les nations l’exècrent.
He that saith unto the wicked: 'Thou art righteous', peoples shall curse him, nations shall execrate him;
25 Mais ceux qui le corrigent sont applaudis, sur eux viennent la bénédiction et le bonheur.
But to them that decide justly shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.
26 Il baise sur les lèvres celui qui répond des paroles justes.
He kisseth the lips that giveth a right answer.
27 Règle ton travail au dehors, applique-le à ton champ, puis tu bâtiras ta maison.
Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thy house.
28 Ne témoigne pas à la légère contre ton prochain: voudrais-tu tromper par tes lèvres?
Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive not with thy lips.
29 Ne dis pas: « Comme il m’a fait, je lui ferai; je rendrai à cet homme selon ses œuvres. »
Say not: 'I will do so to him as he hath done to me; I will render to the man according to his work.'
30 J’ai passé près du champ d’un paresseux, et près de la vigne d’un insensé.
I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;
31 Et voici, … les épines y croissaient partout, les ronces en couvraient la surface, et le mur de pierres était écroulé.
And, lo, it was all grown over with thistles, the face thereof was covered with nettles, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.
32 J’ai regardé, et j’ai appliqué mon cœur, j’ai considéré et j’ai tiré cette leçon:
Then I beheld, and considered well; I saw, and received instruction.
33 « Un peu de sommeil, un peu d’assoupissement, un peu croiser les mains pour dormir,
'Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep' —
34 et ta pauvreté viendra comme un rôdeur, et ton indigence comme un homme armé. »
So shall thy poverty come as a runner, and thy want as an armed man.
