Proverbes 23
1 Si tu es à table avec un grand, fais attention à ce qui est devant toi.
When thou sittest to eate with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee,
2 Mets un couteau à ta gorge, si tu as trop d’avidité.
And put the knife to thy throte, if thou be a man giuen to the appetite.
3 Ne convoite pas ses mets délicats, c’est un aliment trompeur. Ne pas se tourmenter pour s’enrichir.
Be not desirous of his deintie meates: for it is a deceiuable meate.
4 Ne te tourmente pas pour devenir riche, abstiens-toi d’ y appliquer ton intelligence.
Trauaile not too much to be rich: but cease from thy wisdome.
5 Veux-tu poursuivre du regard ce qui va s’évanouir? Car la richesse se fait des ailes, et, comme l’aigle, elle s’envole vers les cieux. Éviter la table de l’envieux.
Wilt thou cast thine eyes vpon it, which is nothing? for riches taketh her to her wings, as an eagle, and flyeth into the heauen.
6 Ne mange pas le pain de l’homme envieux, et ne convoite pas ses mets délicats;
Eate thou not the bread of him that hath an euil eye, neither desire his deintie meates.
7 car il ne vaut pas plus que les pensées de son âme. « Mange et bois, » te dira-t-il; mais son cœur n’est pas avec toi.
For as though he thought it in his heart, so will hee say vnto thee, Eate and drinke: but his heart is not with thee.
8 Tu vomiras le morceau que tu as mangé, et tu en seras pour tes belles paroles. L’insensé méprise la sagesse.
Thou shalt vomit thy morsels that thou hast eaten, and thou shalt lose thy sweete wordes.
9 Ne parle pas aux oreilles de l’insensé, car il méprisera la sagesse de tes discours. Respect des bornes.
Speake not in the eares of a foole: for hee will despise the wisdome of thy wordes.
10 Ne déplace pas la borne antique, et n’entre pas dans le champ des orphelins.
Remooue not the ancient boundes, and enter not into the fieldes of the fatherlesse.
11 Car leur vengeur est puissant: il défendra leur cause contre toi. Instruction et correction.
For he that redeemeth them, is mightie: he will defend their cause against thee.
12 Applique ton cœur à l’instruction, et tes oreilles aux paroles de la science.
Apply thine heart to instruction, and thine eares to the wordes of knowledge.
13 N’épargne pas la correction à l’enfant; si tu le frappes de la verge, il ne mourra point.
Withhold not correction from the childe: if thou smite him with the rodde, he shall not die.
14 Tu le frappes de la verge, et tu délivres son âme du schéol. Le sage fait le bonheur de qui l’instruit. (Sheol h7585)
Thou shalt smite him with the rodde, and shalt deliuer his soule from hell. (Sheol h7585)
15 Mon fils, si ton cœur est sage, mon cœur, à moi aussi, sera dans la joie.
My sonne, if thine heart be wise, mine heart shall reioyce, and I also.
16 Mes entrailles tressailliront d’allégresse, quand tes lèvres diront ce qui est droit. Récompense de la crainte de Yahweh.
And my reynes shall reioyce, when thy lips speake righteous things.
17 Que ton cœur n’envie pas les pécheurs, mais qu’il reste toujours dans la crainte de Yahweh;
Let not thine heart bee enuious against sinners: but let it bee in the feare of the Lord continually.
18 car il y a un avenir, et ton espérance ne sera pas anéantie. Contre la gourmandise.
For surely there is an ende, and thy hope shall not be cut off.
19 Écoute, mon fils, et sois sage; dirige ton cœur dans la voie droite.
O thou my sonne, heare, and bee wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
20 Ne sois pas parmi les buveurs de vin, parmi ceux qui se gorgent de viandes;
Keepe not company with drunkards, nor with gluttons.
21 car le buveur et le gourmand s’appauvrissent, et la somnolence fait porter des haillons. Sagesse des enfants, bonheur des parents.
For the drunkard and the glutton shall bee poore, and the sleeper shalbe clothed with ragges.
22 Écoute ton père, lui qui t’a engendré, et ne méprise pas ta mère, quand elle est devenue vieille.
Obey thy father that hath begotten thee, and despise not thy mother when she is olde.
23 Acquiers la vérité, et ne la vend pas, la sagesse, l’instruction et l’intelligence.
Bye the trueth, but sell it not: likewise wisdome, and instruction, and vnderstanding.
24 Le père du juste est dans l’allégresse, celui qui donne le jour à un sage en aura de la joie.
The father of the righteous shall greatly reioyce, and hee that begetteth a wise childe, shall haue ioy of him.
25 Que ton père et ta mère se réjouissent! Que celle qui t’a enfanté soit dans l’allégresse! Dangers de la courtisane.
Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall reioyce.
26 Mon fils, donne-moi ton cœur, et que tes yeux gardent mes voies:
My sonne, giue mee thine heart, and let thine eyes delite in my wayes.
27 car la courtisane est une fosse profonde, et l’étrangère un puits étroit.
For a whore is as a deepe ditche, and a strange woman is as a narrowe pitte.
28 Elle dresse des embûches comme pour une proie et elle augmente parmi les hommes le nombre des prévaricateurs.
Also she lyeth in wait as for a praye, and she increaseth the transgressers among men.
29 Pour qui les ah? Pour qui les hélas? Pour qui les disputes? Pour qui les murmures? Pour qui les blessures sans raison? Pour qui les yeux rouges?…
To whome is woe? to whome is sorowe? to whom is strife? to whom is murmuring? to whom are woundes without cause? and to whome is the rednesse of the eyes?
30 Pour ceux qui s’attardent auprès du vin, pour ceux qui vont goûter du vin aromatisé.
Euen to them that tarie long at the wine, to them that goe, and seeke mixt wine.
31 Ne regarde pas le vin: comme il est vermeil, comme il donne son éclat dans la coupe, comme il coule aisément.
Looke not thou vpon the wine, when it is red, and when it sheweth his colour in the cup, or goeth downe pleasantly.
32 Il finit par mordre comme un serpent, et par piquer comme un basilic.
In the ende thereof it will bite like a serpent, and hurt like a cockatrise.
33 Tes yeux se porteront sur des étrangères, et ton cœur tiendra des discours pervers.
Thine eyes shall looke vpon strange women, and thine heart shall speake lewde things.
34 Tu seras comme un homme couché au milieu de la mer, comme un homme endormi au sommet d’un mât.
And thou shalt bee as one that sleepeth in the middes of the sea, and as hee that sleepeth in the toppe of the maste.
35 « On m’a frappé… Je n’ai point de mal! On m’a battu… Je ne sens rien!… Quand me réveillerai-je?… Il m’en faut encore! »
They haue stricken mee, shalt thou say, but I was not sicke: they haue beaten mee, but I knew not, when I awoke: therefore will I seeke it yet still.
