Néhémie 2
1 Au mois de Nisan, la vingtième année du roi Artaxerxès, comme le vin était devant lui, je pris le vin et je l’offris au roi, et je tâchai de n’être pas triste en sa présence.
Nowe in the moneth Nisan in the twentieth yere of king Artahshashte, the wine stoode before him, and I tooke vp the wine, and gaue it vnto the King. nowe I was not before time sad in his presence.
2 Le roi me dit: « Pourquoi ton visage est-il triste, puisque tu n’es pas malade? Ce ne peut être qu’une tristesse de cœur. »
And the king said vnto me, Why is thy coutenance sad, seeing thou art not sicke? this is nothing, but sorow of heart. Then was I sore afrayd,
3 Je fus très effrayé et je répondis au roi: « Que le roi vive éternellement! Comment mon visage ne serait-il pas triste, lorsque la ville où sont les sépulcres de mes pères est dévastée et que ses portes sont consumées par le feu? »
And I said to the King, God saue the King for euer: why should not my countenance be sad, when the citie and house of the sepulchres of my fathers lieth waste, and the gates thereof are deuoured with fire?
4 Et le roi me dit: « Que veux-tu demander? »
And the King said vnto me, For what thing doest thou require? Then I prayed to the God of heauen,
5 Je priai le Dieu du ciel, et je répondis au roi: « Si le roi le trouve bon, et si ton serviteur t’est agréable, je demande que tu m’envoies en Juda, vers la ville des sépulcres de mes pères, pour que je la rebâtisse. »
And sayde vnto the King, If it please the King, and if thy seruant haue found fauour in thy sight, I desire that thou wouldest send me to Iudah vnto the city of the sepulchres of my fathers, that I may buyld it.
6 Et le roi me dit, la reine étant assise près de lui: « Jusqu’à quand durera ton voyage, et quand reviendras-tu? » il plut au roi de m’envoyer et je lui fixai un temps.
And the King sayd vnto me, (the Queene also sitting by him) How long shall thy iourney be? and when wilt thou come againe? So it pleased the King, and he sent me, and I set him a time.
7 Puis je dis au roi: « Si le roi le trouve bon, qu’on me donne des lettres pour les gouverneurs d’au delà du fleuve, afin qu’ils me laissent passer jusqu’à ce que j’arrive en Juda,
After I saide vnto the King, If it please the King, let them giue mee letters to the captaines beyond the Riuer, that they may conuay me ouer, till I come into Iudah,
8 et une lettre pour Asaph, garde de la forêt qui appartient au roi, afin qu’il me fournisse du bois pour mettre des poutres aux portes de la forteresse qui est proche du temple, pour la muraille de la ville et pour la maison où je me retirerai. » Et le roi me donna ces lettres, car la main favorable de mon Dieu était sur moi.
And letters vnto Asaph the keeper of the Kings parke, that hee may giue me timber to buylde the gates of the palace (which apperteined to the house) and for the walles of the citie, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the King gaue me according to the good hand of my God vpon me.
9 Je me rendis donc auprès des gouverneurs d’au delà du fleuve, et je leur remis les lettres du roi; or le roi avait envoyé avec moi des chefs militaires et des cavaliers.
Then came I to the captaines beyonde the Riuer, and gaue them the Kings letters. And the King had sent captaines of the armie and horsemen with me.
10 Quand Sanaballat, le Horonite, et Tobie, le serviteur ammonite, furent au courant, il leur parut très mauvais qu’un homme vint pour procurer le bien des enfants d’Israël.
But Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah a seruant an Ammonite heard it, and it grieued them sore, that there was come a man which sought the wealth of the children of Israel.
11 J’arrivai à Jérusalem et, après y avoir passé trois jours,
So I came to Ierusalem, and was there three dayes.
12 je me levai pendant la nuit, avec un petit nombre d’hommes. Je ne communiquai à personne ce que mon Dieu m’avait mis au cœur de faire pour Jérusalem. Je n’avais avec moi d’autre bête de somme que ma propre monture.
And I rose in the night, I, and a fewe men with me: for I told no man, what God had put in mine heart to do at Ierusalem, and there was not a beast with me, saue the beast whereon I rode.
13 Je sortis de nuit par la porte de la Vallée, me dirigeant vers la source du Dragon et la porte du Fumier; et je considérai les murailles démolies de Jérusalem et ses portes consumées par le feu.
And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, and came before the dragon well, and to the dung porte, and vewed the walles of Ierusalem, howe they were broken downe, and the portes thereof deuoured with the fire.
14 Je continuai vers la porte de la Source et l’étang du Roi, et il n’y avait pas de place pour que la monture pût passer sous moi.
Then I went foorth vnto the gate of the fountaine, and to the Kings fishpoole, and there was no rowme for the beast that was vnder me to passe.
15 Je montai de nuit dans le ravin, et je considérai la muraille; puis je revins par la porte de la Vallée, et je rentrai.
Then went I vp in ye night by the brooke, and viewed the wall, and turned backe, and comming backe, I entred by the gate of the valley and returned.
16 Les magistrats ignoraient où j’étais allé et ce que je voulais faire. Jusqu’à ce moment, je n’avais fait part de rien aux Juifs, ni aux prêtres, ni aux grands, ni aux magistrats, ni au reste du peuple qui devait s’occuper des travaux.
And the rulers knewe not whither I was gone, nor what I did, neither did I as yet tell it vnto the Iewes, nor to the Priestes, nor to the noble men, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that laboured in the worke.
17 Je leur dis
Afterward I said vnto them, Ye see the miserie that we are in, how Ierusalem lyeth waste, and the gates thereof are burnt with fire: come and let vs buylde the wall of Ierusalem, that we be no more a reproche.
18 Je leur dis alors: « Vous voyez la misère dans laquelle nous sommes, Jérusalem est dévastée, et ses portes sont consumées par le feu. Venez, rebâtissons la muraille de Jérusalem, et nous ne serons plus un sujet d’ opprobre. »
Then I tolde them of the hande of my God, (which was good ouer me) and also of the Kings wordes that he had spoken vnto me. And they sayd, Let vs rise, and buyld. So they strengthened their hand to good.
19 Et je leur racontai comment la main favorable de mon Dieu avait été sur moi, et aussi quelles paroles le roi m’avaient adressées. Ils répondirent: « Levons-nous, et bâtissons! « Et ils mirent avec courage la main à cette bonne œuvre.
But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the seruant an Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian heard it, they mocked vs and despised vs, and said, What a thing is this that ye doe? Will ye rebell against the King?
20 Quand Sanaballat, le Horonite, Tobie, le serviteur ammonite, et Gosem, l’Arabe, l’eurent appris, ils se moquèrent de nous et nous méprisèrent. Ils disaient: « Que faites-vous là? Vous révoltez-vous contre le roi? » Je leur fis réponse et leur dis: « Le Dieu du ciel nous donnera le succès. Nous, ses serviteurs, nous allons nous mettre à rebâtir; quant à vous, vous n’avez ni part, ni droit, ni souvenir dans Jérusalem. »
Then answered I them, and sayd to them, The God of heauen, he will prosper vs, and we his seruants will rise vp and buylde: but as for you, ye haue no portion nor right, nor memoriall in Ierusalem.
