Matthieu 3
1 En ces jours-là parut Jean-Baptiste, prêchant dans le désert de Judée,
About that time John the Baptist first appeared, proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea:
2 et disant: « Repentez-vous, car le royaume des cieux est proche. »
‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
3 C’est lui qui a été annoncé par le prophète Isaïe, disant: « Une voix a retenti au désert: Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, aplanissez ses sentiers. »
John was the one who was spoken of in the prophet Isaiah, where he says – “The voice of one crying aloud in the wilderness: ‘Make ready the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’”
4 Or Jean avait un vêtement de poils de chameau, et autour de ses reins une ceinture de cuir, et il se nourrissait de sauterelles et de miel sauvage.
John’s clothes were made of camels’ hair, with a leather strap round his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Alors venaient à lui Jérusalem, et toute la Judée, et tout le pays qu’arrose le Jourdain.
At that time Jerusalem, and all Judea, as well as the whole district of the Jordan, went out to him
6 Et, confessant leurs péchés, ils se faisaient baptiser par lui dans le Jourdain.
and were baptised by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
7 Voyant un grand nombre de Pharisiens et de Sadducéens venir à ce baptême il leur dit: « Race de vipères, qui vous a appris à fuir la colère qui vient?
But when John saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to receive his baptism, he said to them, ‘You children of snakes! Who has prompted you to seek refuge from the coming judgment?
8 Faites donc de dignes fruits de repentir.
Let your life, then, prove your repentance;
9 Et n’essayez pas de dire en vous-mêmes: Nous avons Abraham pour père; car je vous dis que de ces pierres mêmes Dieu peut faire naître des enfants à Abraham.
and do not think that you can say among yourselves “Abraham is our ancestor,” for I tell you that out of these stones God is able to raise descendants for Abraham!
10 Déjà la cognée est à la racine des arbres: tout arbre donc qui ne porte pas de bon fruit sera coupé et jeté au feu.
Already the axe is lying at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that fails to bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
11 Moi, je vous baptise dans l’eau pour le repentir; mais celui qui doit venir après moi est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de porter sa chaussure; il vous baptisera dans l’Esprit-Saint et dans le feu.
I, indeed, baptise you with water to teach repentance; but he who is coming after me is more powerful than I, and I am not fit even to carry his sandals. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
12 Sa main tient le van; il nettoiera son aire, il amassera son froment dans le grenier, et il brûlera la paille dans un feu qui ne s’éteint point. »
His winnowing-fan is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor, and store his grain in the barn, but the chaff he will burn with a fire that cannot be put out.’
13 Alors Jésus, venant de Galilée, alla trouver Jean au Jourdain pour être baptisé par lui.
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be baptised by him.
14 Jean s’en défendait en disant: « C’est moi qui doit être baptisé par vous, et vous venez à moi! »
But John tried to prevent him. ‘I need to be baptised by you,’ he said, ‘so why have you come to me?’
15 Jésus lui répondit: « Laisse faire maintenant, car il convient que nous accomplissions ainsi toute justice. » Alors Jean le laissa faire.
‘This is the way it should be for now,’ Jesus answered, ‘because we should do everything that God requires.’ So John agreed.
16 Jésus ayant été baptisé sortit aussitôt de l’eau, et voilà que les cieux lui furent ouverts, et il vit l’Esprit de Dieu descendre comme une colombe et venir sur lui.
After the baptism of Jesus, and just as he came up from the water, the heavens opened, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and resting on him,
17 Et du ciel une voix disait: « Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, en qui j’ai mis mes complaisances. »
and from the heavens there came a voice which said, ‘This is my dearly loved son, who brings me great joy.’
