Luc 1
1 Après que plusieurs ont entrepris de composer une relation des choses dont on a parmi nous pleine conviction,
SINCE many have been disposed to write narratives of those events, of which we have full assurance,
2 conformément à ce que nous ont transmis ceux qui ont été dès le commencement, témoins oculaires et ministres de la parole;
as they delivered them to us, who from the first were eye-witnesses and ministers of the word;
3 j’ai résolu moi aussi, après m’être appliqué à connaître exactement toutes choses depuis l’origine, de t’en écrire le récit suivi, excellent Théophile,
it seemed proper for me also, as I had examined them all accurately, to write out the whole, methodically, for thee, excellent Theophilus:
4 afin que tu reconnaisses la certitude des enseignements que tu as reçus.
that thou mayest know the truth of the statements, which thou hast been taught.
5 Aux jours d’Hérode, roi de Judée, il y avait un prêtre, nommé Zacharie, de la classe d’Abia; et sa femme, qui était une des filles d’Aaron, s’appelait Élisabeth.
In the days of Herod the king of Judaea, there was a certain priest, whose name was Zachariah, of the ministration of the house of Abijah; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6 Tous deux étaient justes devant Dieu, marchant dans tous les commandements et ordonnances du Seigneur, d’une manière irréprochable.
And they were both upright before God, and walked in all his commandments, and in the righteousness of the Lord, without reproach.
7 Ils n’avaient point d’enfants, parce qu’Élisabeth était stérile, et ils étaient l’un et l’autre avancés en âge.
But they had no child, because Elisabeth was barren: and they were both advanced in life.
8 Or, pendant que Zacharie s’acquittait devant Dieu des fonctions sacerdotales, dans l’ordre de sa classe,
And it occurred, that as he performed the priestly functions in the order of his ministration before the Lord,
9 il fut désigné par le sort, selon la coutume observée par les prêtres, pour entrer dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur et y offrir l’encens.
according to the usage of the priesthood, it fell to him to offer the incense. And he went into the temple of the Lord,
10 Et toute la multitude du peuple était dehors en prière à l’heure de l’encens.
and the whole multitude of the people were praying without, at the time of incense.
11 Mais un ange du Seigneur lui apparut, debout à droite de l’autel de l’encens.
And the angel of the Lord appeared to Zachariah, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12 Zacharie, en le voyant, fut troublé, et la crainte le saisit.
And when Zachariah saw him, he was agitated, and fear fell upon him.
13 Mais l’ange lui dit: « Ne crains point, Zacharie, car ta prière a été exaucée; ta femme Élisabeth te donnera un fils que tu appelleras Jean.
And the angel said to him: Fear not, Zachariah; for thy prayer is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth will bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 Il sera pour toi un sujet de joie et d’allégresse, et beaucoup se réjouiront de sa naissance;
And thou wilt have joy and gladness: and many will rejoice at his birth.
15 car il sera grand devant le Seigneur. Il ne boira ni vin, ni rien qui enivre, car il sera rempli de l’Esprit-Saint dès le sein de sa mère.
For he will be great before the Lord; and he will not drink wine nor strong drink, and will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb.
16 Il convertira beaucoup d’enfants d’Israël au Seigneur leur Dieu;
And many of the children of Israel will he convert to the Lord their God.
17 et lui-même marchera devant lui, dans l’esprit et la puissance d’Élie, pour ramener les cœurs des pères vers les enfants, et les indociles à la sagesse des justes, afin de préparer au Seigneur un peuple parfait. »
And he will go before him, in the spirit and power of Elijah the prophet, and will turn the heart of the fathers unto the children, and them that are disobedient to the knowledge of the righteous, and will prepare a perfect people for the Lord.
18 Zacharie dit à l’ange: « À quoi reconnaîtrai-je que cela sera? Car je suis vieux, et ma femme est avancée en âge. »
And Zachariah said to the angel: How shall I know this? For I am old, and my wife is advanced in life.
19 L’ange lui répondit: « Je suis Gabriel, qui me tiens devant Dieu; j’ai été envoyé pour te parler et t’annoncer cette heureuse nouvelle.
The angel answered, and said to him: I am Gabriel, who stand before God; and I am sent to converse with thee, and to tell thee these things.
20 Et voici que tu seras muet et ne pourras parler jusqu’au jour où ces choses arriveront, parce que tu n’as pas cru à mes paroles, qui s’accompliront en leur temps. »
Henceforth thou wilt be dumb, and unable to speak, until the day when these things take place: because thou believedst not my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.
21 Cependant le peuple attendait Zacharie, et il s’étonnait qu’il demeurât si longtemps dans le sanctuaire.
And the people were standing and waiting for Zachariah; and they wondered at his tarrying so long in the temple.
22 Mais étant sorti, il ne pouvait leur parler, et ils comprirent qu’il avait eu une vision dans le sanctuaire, ce qu’il leur faisait entendre par signes; et il resta muet.
And when Zachariah came forth, he could not speak with them: and they understood that he had seen a vision in the temple: and he made many signs to them, and remained speechless.
23 Quand les jours de son ministère furent accomplis, il s’en alla en sa maison.
And when the days of his ministration were accomplished, he came to his house.
24 Quelque temps après, Élisabeth, sa femme, conçut, et elle se tint cachée pendant cinq mois, disant:
And it was after those days, that Elisabeth his wife conceived. And she secluded herself five months; and she said:
25 « C’est une grâce que le Seigneur m’a faite, au jour où il m’a regardée pour ôter mon opprobre parmi les hommes. »
These things hath the Lord done for me, in the days when he looked upon me to take away my reproach among men.
26 Au sixième mois, l’ange Gabriel fut envoyé de Dieu dans une ville de Galilée appelée Nazareth,
And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God into Galilee, to a city named Nazareth,
27 auprès d’une vierge qui était fiancée à un homme de la maison de David, nommé Joseph, et le nom de la vierge était Marie.
to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 L’ange étant entré où elle était, lui dit: « Je vous salue, pleine de grâce; le Seigneur est avec vous, vous êtes bénie entre les femmes. »
And the angel entered the house, and said to her: Peace to thee, thou full of grace! The Lord is with thee: and blessed art thou among women.
29 Marie l’ayant aperçu, fut troublée de ses paroles, et elle se demandait ce que pouvait signifier cette salutation.
And when she saw him, she was agitated by his speech; and she pondered, what this salutation could mean.
30 L’ange lui dit: « Ne craignez point, Marie, car vous avez trouvé grâce devant Dieu.
And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary; for thou hast found favor with God.
31 Voici que vous concevrez en votre sein, et vous enfanterez un fils, et vous lui donnerez le nom de Jésus.
For lo, thou wilt conceive in thy womb, and wilt bear a son, and wilt call his name Jesus.
32 Il sera grand, on l’appellera le Fils du Très-Haut; le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David son père;
He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.
And he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his reign there will be no end. (aiōn g165)
34 Marie dit à l’ange: « Comment cela se fera-t-il, puisque je ne connais point d’homme? »
And Mary said to the angel: How can this be, as I have not known a man?
35 L’ange lui répondit: « L’Esprit-Saint viendra sur vous, et la vertu du Très-Haut vous couvrira de son ombre. C’est pourquoi l’être saint qui naîtra (de vous) sera appelé Fils de Dieu.
The angel replied, and said to her: The Holy Spirit will come, and the power of the Most High will overshadow thee; therefore he that is born of thee is holy, and will be called the Son of God.
36 Déjà Élisabeth, votre parente, a conçu elle aussi, un fils dans sa vieillesse, et c’est actuellement son sixième mois, à elle que l’on appelle stérile:
And lo, Elisabeth thy kinswoman, even she too hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who is called barren.
37 car rien ne sera impossible à Dieu. »
Because nothing is difficult for God.
38 Marie dit alors: « Voici la servante du Seigneur, qu’il me soit fait selon votre parole. » Et l’ange la quitta.
Mary said: Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; be it to me, according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
39 En ces jours-là, Marie se levant, s’en alla en hâte au pays des montagnes, en une ville de Juda.
And Mary arose in those days, and went hastily to the mountain district, to a city of Judaea;
40 Et elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie, et salua Élisabeth.
and entered the house of Zachariah, and saluted Elisabeth.
41 Or, dès qu’Élisabeth eut entendu la salutation de Marie, l’enfant tressaillit dans son sein, et elle fut remplie du Saint-Esprit.
And it was so, that when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the child leaped in her womb, and she was filled with the Holy Spirit.
42 Et élevant la voix, elle s’écria: « Vous êtes bénie entre les femmes, et le fruit de vos entrailles est béni.
And she cried out with a loud voice, and said to Mary: Blessed art thou among women; and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43 Et d’où m’est-il donné que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne à moi?
And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 Car votre voix, lorsque vous m’avez saluée, n’a pas plus tôt frappé mes oreilles, que mon enfant a tressailli de joie dans mon sein.
For lo, as the voice of thy salutation fell upon my ears, with great joy the child leaped in my womb.
45 Heureuse celle qui a cru! car elles seront accomplies les choses qui lui ont été dites de la part du Seigneur! »
And happy is she that believed; for there will be a fulfillment of those things that were told her by the Lord.
46 Et Marie dit: « Mon âme glorifie le Seigneur.
And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord:
47 Et mon esprit tressaille de joie en Dieu, mon Sauveur,
and my spirit rejoiceth in God the author of my life.
48 Parce qu’il a jeté les yeux sur la bassesse de sa servante. Voici, en effet, que désormais toutes les générations m’appelleront bienheureuse,
For he hath looked upon the humble condition of his hand maid; and lo, henceforth all generations will ascribe blessedness to me.
49 Parce qu’il a fait en moi de grandes choses, Celui qui est puissant, Et dont le nom est saint,
And He that is mighty hath done for me great things; and holy is his name.
50 Et dont la miséricorde s’étend d’âge en âge, Sur ceux qui le craignent.
And his mercy is on them that fear him, for generations and posterities.
51 Il a déployé la force de son bras; Il a dissipé ceux qui s’enorgueillissaient dans les pensées de leur cœur;
He hath wrought victory with his arm; and hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart.
52 Il a renversé de leur trône les potentats, Et il a élevé les petits;
He hath cast down the mighty from their thrones, and hath exalted the lowly.
53 Il a comblé de biens les affamés, Et les riches, il les a renvoyés les mains vides.
The hungry hath he satisfied with good things, and the rich hath he sent away empty.
54 Il a pris soin d’Israël son serviteur, Se ressouvenant de sa miséricorde,
He hath aided Israel his servant, and remembered his mercy,
(as he spoke with the fathers, ) with Abraham and his seed, for ever. (aiōn g165)
56 Marie demeura avec Élisabeth environ trois mois, et s’en retourna chez elle.
And Mary remained with Elisabeth about three months, and returned to her home.
57 Cependant, le temps s’accomplit où Élisabeth devait enfanter, et elle mit au monde un fils.
And Elisabeth's time of bringing forth arrived; and she bore a son.
58 Ses voisins et ses parents, ayant appris que le Seigneur avait signalé en elle sa miséricorde, se réjouissaient avec elle.
And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.
59 Le huitième jour, ils vinrent pour circoncire l’enfant, et ils le nommaient Zacharie d’après le nom de son père.
And it occurred, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they called him by the name of his father, Zachariah.
60 Mais sa mère, prenant la parole: « Non, dit-elle, mais il s’appellera Jean. »
And his mother answered and said: Not so; but John, shall he be called.
61 Ils lui dirent: « Il n’y a personne dans votre famille qui soit appelé de ce nom. »
And they said to her: There is no one among thy kindred called by that name.
62 Et ils demandaient par signe à son père comment il voulait qu’on le nommât.
And they made signs to his father, how he would have him named.
63 S’étant fait apporter une tablette, il écrivit: « Jean est son nom «; et tous furent dans l’étonnement.
And he asked for a tablet, and wrote, and said: John is his name. And every one was surprised.
64 Au même instant sa bouche s’ouvrit, sa langue se délia; et il parlait, bénissant Dieu.
And immediately his mouth was opened, and his tongue; and he spoke, and praised God.
65 La crainte s’empara de tous les habitants d’alentour, et partout dans les montagnes de la Judée, on racontait toutes ces merveilles.
And fear came upon all their neighbors; and these things were talked of in all the mountain district of Judaea.
66 Tous ceux qui en entendirent parler les recueillirent dans leur cœur, et ils disaient: « Que sera donc cet enfant? Car la main du Seigneur était avec lui. »
And all who heard, pondered them in their heart, and said: What will this child be? And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 Et Zacharie, son père, fut rempli de l’Esprit-Saint, et il prophétisa, en disant:
And Zachariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, and said:
68 « Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d’Israël, Parce qu’il a visité et racheté son peuple.
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who hath visited his people, and wrought redemption for them:
69 Et qu’il a suscité une Force pour nous sauver, Dans la maison de David, son serviteur,
And hath raised up a horn of redemption for us, in the house of David his servant:
70 (Ainsi qu’il l’a promis par la bouche de ses saints, De ses prophètes, dès les temps anciens). (aiōn g165)
as he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, who were of old, (aiōn g165)
71 Pour nous sauver de nos ennemis Et du pouvoir de tous ceux qui nous haïssent.
that he would redeem us from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us.
72 Afin d’exercer sa miséricorde envers nos pères. Et de se souvenir de son pacte saint;
And he hath exercised his mercy to our fathers, and hath remembered his holy covenants,
73 Selon le serment qu’il fit à Abraham, notre père,
and the oath that he sware to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us,
74 De nous accorder que, sans crainte, Affranchis du pouvoir de nos ennemis,
to be redeemed from the hand of our enemies; and that we should worship before him, without fear,
75 Nous le servions, avec une sainteté et une justice Dignes de ses regards, tous les jours de notre vie.
all our days, in rectitude and uprightness.
76 Quant à toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut, Car tu marcheras devant la face du Seigneur, Pour lui préparer les voies;
And thou, child, wilt be called a prophet of the Most High; for thou wilt go before the face of the Lord, to prepare his way,
77 Pour apprendre à son peuple à reconnaître le salut Dans la rémission de leurs péchés:
that he may give the knowledge of life to his people, and forgiveness of their sins,
78 Par l’effet de la tendre miséricorde de notre Dieu, Grâce à laquelle nous a visités, d’en haut, le Soleil levant,
through the compassion of the mercy of our God; whereby the day-spring from on high will visit us,
79 Pour éclairer ceux qui sont assis dans les ténèbres et l’ombre de la mort, Pour diriger nos pas dans la voie de la paix. »
to give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death; and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
80 Or l’enfant croissait et se fortifiait en esprit, et il demeura dans le désert jusqu’au jour de sa manifestation devant Israël.
And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit. And he was in the wilderness, until the day of his manifestation to Israel.
