Lamentations 4
1 Comment l’or s’est-il terni, l’or pur s’est-il altéré, les pierres sacrées ont-elles été dispersées, au coin de toutes les rues? BETH.
Oh how is the gold become dim! how is the most fine gold changed! how are the stones of the sanctuary poured out at the corners of every street.
2 Les plus nobles fils de Sion, estimés au poids de l’or fin, comment ont-ils été comptés pour des vases de terre, ouvrage des mains d’un potier? GHIMEL.
The precious sons of Zion, valued equal to pure gold, how are they now esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!
3 Même les chacals présentent les mamelles, et allaitent leurs petits; la fille de mon peuple est devenue cruelle, comme les autruches dans le désert. DALETH.
Even wild beasts offer the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.
4 La langue du nourrisson s’attache à son palais, à cause de la soif; les petits enfants demandent du pain, et personne ne leur en donne. HÉ.
The tongue of the suckling cleaveth to its palate by reason of thirst: babes ask for bread, there is not one to break it for them.
5 Ceux qui se nourrissaient de mets délicats tombent d’inanition dans les rues; ceux qu’on portait sur la pourpre embrassent le fumier. VAV.
Those that used to eat dainty food are desolate in the streets: they that were reared up on scarlet now embrace dunghills.
6 Et l’iniquité de la fille de mon peuple a été plus grande que le péché de Sodome, qui fut renversée en un instant, sans que des mains se levassent contre elle. ZAÏN.
For greater is the iniquity of the daughter of my people than the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as it were in a moment, and no human hands were laid on her.
7 Ses princes surpassaient la neige en éclat, le lait en blancheur; leur corps était plus vermeil que le corail, leur figure était un saphir. HETH.
Her crowned princes were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more brilliant in body than pearls, more than the sapphire, their countenance:
8 Leur aspect est plus sombre que le noir même; on ne les reconnaît plus dans les rues; leur peau est collée à leurs os, elle est sèche comme du bois. TETH.
Darker than black is now their visage; they are not to be recognized in the streets: their skin is shriveled fast upon their bones; it is dry, it is become like wood.
9 Plus heureuses sont les victimes de l’épée que les victimes de la faim, qui s’épuisent lentement, blessées, faute des produits des champs! JOD.
Happier are those slain by the sword than those slain by hunger; for those poured forth their blood, being pierced through, —[these perished] without the fruits of the field.
10 Des femmes compatissantes ont de leurs mains fait cuire leurs enfants; ils leur ont servi de nourriture, dans le désastre de la fille de mon peuple. CAPH.
The hands of merciful women cooked their own children: they became food unto them in the downfall of the daughter of my people.
11 Yahweh a épuisé sa fureur; il a répandu l’ardeur de sa colère, et a allumé dans Sion un feu qui en a dévoré les fondements. LAMED.
The Lord hath let loose all his fury: he hath poured out the fierceness of his anger: and he hath kindled a fire in Zion, which hath devoured her foundations.
12 Ils ne croyaient pas, les rois de la terre, ni tous les habitants du monde, que l’adversaire, l’ennemi entrerait dans les portes de Jérusalem. MEM.
The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not believe that an adversary or an enemy could ever enter within the gates of Jerusalem.
13 C’est à cause des péchés de ses prophètes, des iniquités de ses prêtres, qui répandaient dans son enceinte le sang des justes. NUN.
[But it hath happened] because of the sins of her prophets, the iniquities of her priests, that had shed in the midst of her the blood of the righteous.
14 Ils erraient comme des aveugles dans les rues, souillés de sang, de sorte qu’on ne pouvait toucher leurs vêtements. SAMECH.
They wandered about blindly in the streets, they became defiled with blood; so that men were not able to touch their garments.
15 « Écartez-vous! Un impur! » leur criait-on. « Écartez-vous! Écartez-vous! Ne le touchez pas! » Ils erraient, et l’on disait parmi les nations: « Qu’ils ne séjournent point ici! » PHÉ.
Depart, ye unclean, they called out unto them: depart, depart, touch not. So they flee away and also wander about: men say among the nations, They shall no more sojourn there.
16 La face irritée de Yahweh les a dispersés; il ne les regarde plus. L’ennemi n’a eu ni respect pour les prêtres, ni pitié pour les vieillards. AÏN.
The anger of the Lord hath divided them; he will no more look at them: the faces of the priests they respected not, and the elders they spared not.
17 Et nous, nos yeux se consumaient encore à attendre un vain secours; du haut de nos tours, nous regardions vers une nation qui ne peut sauver. TSADÉ.
Even now our eyes anxiously wait for our valueless help: in our waiting have we waited for a nation that cannot help.
18 Ils épiaient nos pas, nous empêchant de marcher dans nos places. Notre fin approche, nos jours sont accomplis; oui, notre fin est arrivée! QOPH.
They hunt our steps, that we cannot walk in our streets: our end is near, our days are full: for our end is come.
19 Ceux qui nous poursuivaient ont été plus légers que les aigles du ciel; ils nous ont pourchassés sur les montagnes; ils nous ont dressé des embûches dans le désert. RESCH.
Swifter were our pursuers than the eagles of heaven: upon the mountains did they hotly follow us: in the wilderness did they lie in wait for us.
20 Le souffle de nos narines, l’oint de Yahweh, a été pris dans leurs fosses, lui dont nous disions: « À son ombre nous vivrons parmi les nations. » SIN.
The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the Lord, was caught in their pits, he, of whom we said, Under his shadow shall we live among the nations.
21 Réjouis-toi et sois dans l’allégresse, fille d’Édom, qui habite au pays de Hus! À toi aussi passera la coupe; tu t’enivreras et tu te mettras à nu. THAV.
Be glad and rejoice, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of 'Uz: also unto thee shall the cup pass; thou wilt be drunken, and make thyself naked.
22 Ton iniquité a pris fin, fille de Sion, il ne t’enverra plus en exil. Il visite ton iniquité, fille d’Édom; il met à découvert tes péchés.
Brought to an end is thy iniquity, O daughter of Zion; He will no more carry thee away into exile: He visiteth thy iniquity, O daughter of Edom; He layeth open thy sins.
