1 Jésus s’en alla sur la montagne des Oliviers;
but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2 mais, dès le point du jour, il retourna dans le temple, et tout le peuple vint à lui. Et s’étant assis, il les enseignait.
At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself;
3 Alors les Scribes et les Pharisiens lui amenèrent une femme surprise en adultère, et l’ayant fait avancer,
and was teaching them when the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been found committing adultery. They made her stand in the centre of the court, and they put the case to Him.
4 ils dirent à Jésus: « Maître, cette femme a été surprise en flagrant délit d’adultère.
"Rabbi," they said, "this woman has been found in the very act of committing adultery.
5 Or Moïse, dans la Loi, nous a ordonné de lapider de telles personnes. Vous donc, que dites-vous? »
Now, in the Law, Moses has ordered us to stone such women to death. But what do you say?"
6 C’était pour l’éprouver qu’ils l’interrogeaient ainsi, afin de pouvoir l’accuser. Mais Jésus, s’étant baissé, écrivait sur la terre avec le doigt.
They asked this in order to put Him to the test, so that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus leant forward and began to write with His finger on the ground.
7 Comme ils continuaient à l’interroger, il se releva et leur dit: « Que celui de vous qui est sans péché lui jette la première pierre. »
When however they persisted with their question, He raised His head and said to them, "Let the sinless man among you be the first to throw a stone at her."
8 Et s’étant baissé de nouveau, il écrivait sur la terre.
Then He leant forward again, and again began to write on the ground.
9 Ayant entendu cette parole, [et se sentant repris par leur conscience, ] ils se retirèrent les uns après les autres, les plus âgés d’abord, [puis tous les autres, ] de sorte que Jésus resta seul avec la femme qui était au milieu.
They listened to Him, and then, beginning with the eldest, took their departure, one by one, till all were gone. And Jesus was left behind alone--and the woman in the centre of the court.
10 Alors Jésus s’étant relevé, et ne voyant plus que la femme, lui dit: « Femme, où sont ceux qui vous accusaient? Est-ce que personne ne vous a condamnée? »
Then, raising His head, Jesus said to her, "Where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
11 Elle répondit: « Personne, Seigneur »; Jésus lui dit: « Je ne vous condamne pas non plus. Allez, et ne péchez plus. »
"No one, Sir," she replied. "And I do not condemn you either," said Jesus; "go, and from this time do not sin any more."]
12 Jésus leur parla de nouveau, disant: « Je suis la lumière du monde. Celui qui me suit ne marchera pas dans les ténèbres, mais il aura la lumière de la vie. »
Once more Jesus addressed them. "I am the Light of the world," He said; "the man who follows me shall certainly not walk in the dark, but shall have the light of Life."
13 Sur quoi les Pharisiens lui dirent: « Vous rendez témoignage de vous-même; votre témoignage n’est pas digne de foi. »
"You are giving testimony about yourself," said the Pharisees; "your testimony is not true."
14 Jésus leur répondit: « Quoique je rende témoignage de moi-même, mon témoignage est véridique, parce que je sais d’où je suis venu et où je vais; mais vous, vous ne savez d’où je viens, ni ou je vais.
"Even if I am giving testimony about myself," replied Jesus, "my testimony is true; for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you know neither of these two things.
15 Vous jugez selon la chair; moi je ne juge personne.
You judge according to appearances: I am judging no one.
16 Et si je juge, mon jugement est véridique, car je ne suis pas seul, mais moi, et le Père qui m’a envoyé.
And even if I do judge, my judgement is just; for I am not alone, but the Father who sent me is with me.
17 Il est écrit dans votre Loi, que le témoignage de deux hommes est digne de foi.
In your own Law, too, it is written that the testimony of two men is true.
18 Or, je rends témoignage de moi-même, et le Père qui m’a envoyé rend aussi témoignage de moi. »
I am one giving testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me gives testimony about me."
19 Ils lui dirent donc: « Où est votre Père? »Jésus répondit: « Vous ne connaissez ni moi, ni mon Père: si vous me connaissiez, vous connaîtriez aussi mon Père. »
"Where is your Father?" they asked. "You know my Father as little as you know me." He replied; "if you knew me, you would know my Father also."
20 Jésus parla de la sorte dans le parvis du Trésor, lorsqu’il enseignait dans le temple; et personne ne mit la main sur lui, parce que son heure n’était pas encore venue.
These sayings He uttered in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple; yet no one arrested Him, because His time had not yet come.
21 Jésus leur dit encore: « Je m’en vais, et vous me chercherez, et vous mourrez dans votre péché. Où je vais, vous ne pouvez venir. »
Again He said to them, "I am going away. Then you will try to find me, but you will die in your sins. Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come."
22 Les Juifs disaient donc: « Est-ce qu’il va se tuer lui-même, puisqu’il dit: Où je vais, vous ne pouvez venir? »
The Jews began to ask one another, "Is he going to kill himself, do you think, that he says, 'Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come'?"
23 Et il leur dit: « Vous, vous êtes d’en bas, moi, je suis d’en haut; vous êtes de ce monde, moi, je ne suis pas de ce monde.
"You," He continued, "are from below, I am from above: you are of this present world, I am not of this present world.
24 C’est pourquoi je vous ai dit que vous mourrez dans votre péché; car si vous ne croyez pas que je suis le Messie, vous mourrez dans votre péché. —
That is why I told you that you will die in your sins; for, unless you believe that I am He, that is what will happen."
25 « Qui êtes-vous? » lui dirent-ils. Jésus leur répondit: « Absolument ce que je vous déclare.
"You--who are you?" they asked. "How is it that I am speaking to you at all?" replied Jesus.
26 J’ai beaucoup de choses à dire de vous et à condamner en vous, mais celui qui m’a envoyé est véridique, et ce que j’ai entendu de lui, je le dis au monde. »
"Many things I have to speak and to judge concerning you. But He who sent me is true, and the things which I have heard from Him are those which I have come into the world to speak."
27 Ils ne comprirent point qu’il leur parlait du Père.
They did not perceive that He was speaking to them of the Father.
28 Jésus donc leur dit: « Lorsque vous aurez élevé le Fils de l’homme, alors vous connaîtrez qui je suis, et que je ne fais rien de moi-même, mais que je dis ce que mon Père m’a enseigné.
So Jesus added, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He. Of myself I do nothing; but as the Father has taught me, so I speak.
29 Et celui qui m’a envoyé est avec moi, et il ne m’a pas laissé seul, parce que je fais toujours ce qui lui plaît. » —
And He who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone: for I do always what is pleasing to Him."
30 Comme il disait ces choses, beaucoup crurent en lui.
As He thus spoke, many became believers in Him.
31 Jésus dit donc aux Juifs qui avaient cru en lui: « Si vous demeurez dans ma parole, vous êtes vraiment mes disciples;
Jesus therefore said to those of the Jews who had now believed in Him, "As for you, if you hold fast to my teaching, then you are truly my disciples;
32 vous connaîtrez la vérité, et la vérité vous rendra libres. »
and you shall know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free."
33 Il lui répondirent: « Nous sommes la race d’Abraham, et nous n’avons jamais été esclaves de personne; comment dites-vous: Vous deviendrez libres? »
"We are descendants of Abraham," they answered, "and have never at any time been in slavery to any one. What do those words of yours mean, 'You shall become free'?"
34 Jésus leur répondit: « En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, quiconque se livre au péché est esclave du péché.
"In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that every one who commits sin is the slave of sin.
35 Or, l’esclave ne demeure pas toujours dans la maison; mais le fils y demeure toujours. (aiōn g165)
Now a slave does not remain permanently in his master's house, but a son does. (aiōn g165)
36 Si donc le Fils vous affranchit, vous serez vraiment libres.
If then the Son shall make you free, you will be free indeed.
37 Je sais que vous êtes enfants d’Abraham; mais vous cherchez à me faire mourir, parce que ma parole ne pénètre pas en vous.
You are descendants of Abraham, I know; but you want to kill me, because my teaching gains no ground within you.
38 Moi je vous dis ce que j’ai vu chez mon Père; et vous, vous faites ce que vous avez vu chez votre père. »
The words I speak are those I have learnt in the presence of the Father. Therefore you also should do what you have heard from your father."
39 Ils lui répondirent: « Notre père, c’est Abraham. » Jésus leur dit: « Si vous étiez enfants d’Abraham, vous feriez les œuvres d’Abraham.
"Our father is Abraham," they said. "If you were Abraham's children," replied Jesus, "it is Abraham's deeds that you would be doing.
40 Mais maintenant vous cherchez à me faire mourir, moi qui vous ai dit la vérité que j’ai entendue de Dieu: ce n’est point ce qu’a fait Abraham.
But, in fact, you are longing to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth which I have heard from God. Abraham did not do that.
41 Vous faites les œuvres de votre père. » Ils lui dirent: « Nous ne sommes pas des enfants de fornication; nous avons un seul Père, qui est Dieu. »
You are doing the deeds of your father." "We," they replied, "are not illegitimate children. We have one Father, namely God."
42 Jésus leur dit: « Si Dieu était votre Père, vous m’aimeriez, car c’est de Dieu que je suis sorti et que je viens; et je ne suis pas venu de moi-même, mais c’est lui qui m’a envoyé.
"If God were your Father," said Jesus, "you would love me; for it is from God that I came and I am now here. I have not come of myself, but He sent me.
43 Pourquoi ne reconnaissez-vous pas mon langage? Parce que vous ne pouvez entendre ma parole.
How is it you do not understand me when I speak? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my words.
44 Le père dont vous êtes issus, c’est le diable, et vous voulez accomplir les désirs de votre père. Il a été homicide dès le commencement, et n’est point demeuré dans la vérité, parce qu’il n’y a point de vérité en lui. Lorsqu’il profère le mensonge, il parle de son propre fonds; car il est menteur, et le père du mensonge.
The father whose sons you are is the Devil; and you desire to do what gives him pleasure. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth--for there is no truth in him. Whenever he utters his lie, he utters it out of his own store; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.
45 Et moi, parce que je vous dis la vérité, vous ne me croyez pas.
But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.
46 Qui de vous me convaincra de péché? Si je dis la vérité, pourquoi ne me croyez-vous pas?
Which of you convicts me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?
47 Celui qui est de Dieu entend la parole de Dieu; c’est parce que vous n’êtes pas de Dieu que vous ne l’entendez pas. »
He who is a child of God listens to God's words. You do not listen to them: and why? It is because you are not God's children."
48 Les Juifs lui répondirent: « N’avons-nous pas raison de dire que vous êtes un Samaritain et que vous êtes possédé d’un démon? »
"Are we not right," answered the Jews, "in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?"
49 Jésus répondit: « Il n’y a point en moi de démon; mais j’honore mon Père, et vous, vous m’outragez.
"I am not possessed by a demon," replied Jesus. "On the contrary I honour my Father, and you dishonour me.
50 Pour moi, je n’ai pas souci de ma gloire: il est quelqu’un qui en prend soin et qui fera justice.
I, however, am not aiming at glory for myself: there is One who aims at glory for me--and who judges.
51 En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, si quelqu’un garde ma parole, il ne verra jamais la mort. » (aiōn g165)
In most solemn truth I tell you that if any one shall have obeyed my teaching he shall in no case ever see death." (aiōn g165)
52 Les Juifs lui dirent: « Nous voyons maintenant qu’un démon est en vous. Abraham est mort, les prophètes aussi, et vous, vous dites: Si quelqu’un garde ma parole, il ne verra jamais la mort. (aiōn g165)
"Now," exclaimed the Jews, "we know that you are possessed by a demon. Abraham died, and so did the Prophets, and yet you say, 'If any one shall have obeyed my teaching, he shall in no case ever taste death.' (aiōn g165)
53 Êtes-vous plus grand que notre père Abraham, qui est mort? Les Prophètes aussi sont morts; qui prétendez-vous être? »
Are you really greater than our forefather Abraham? For he died. And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?"
54 Jésus répondit: « Si je me glorifie moi-même, ma gloire n’est rien; c’est mon Père qui me glorifie, lui dont vous dites qu’il est votre Dieu;
"Were I to glorify myself," answered Jesus, "I should have no real glory. There is One who glorifies me--namely my Father, who you say is your God.
55 et pourtant vous ne le connaissez pas; mais moi, je le connais; et si je disais que je ne le connais pas, je serais menteur comme vous. Mais je le connais et je garde sa parole.
You do not know Him, but I know Him perfectly; and were I to deny my knowledge of Him, I should resemble you, and be a liar. On the contrary I do know Him, and I obey His commands.
56 Abraham votre père, a tressailli de joie de ce qu’il devait voir mon jour; il l’a vu, et il s’est réjoui. »
Abraham your forefather exulted in the hope of seeing my day: and he saw it, and was glad."
57 Les Juifs lui dirent: « Vous n’avez pas encore cinquante ans, et vous avez vu Abraham! »
"You are not yet fifty years old," cried the Jews, "and have you seen Abraham?"
58 Jésus leur répondit: « En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, avant qu’Abraham fût, je suis. »
"In most solemn truth," answered Jesus, "I tell you that before Abraham came into existence, I am."
59 Alors ils prirent des pierres pour les lui jeter; mais Jésus se cacha, et sortit du temple.
Thereupon they took up stones with which to stone Him, but He hid Himself and went away out of the Temple.
