Job 9
1 Alors Job prit la parole et dit:
Then Job answered and said,
2 Je sais bien qu'il en est ainsi: comment l'homme serait-il juste vis-à-vis de Dieu?
I know [it to be] so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?
3 S'il voulait contester avec lui, sur mille choses il ne pourrait répondre à une seule.
If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
4 Dieu est sage en son cœur, et puissant en force: qui lui a résisté, et est demeuré en paix?
[He is] wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened [himself] against him, and hath prospered?
5 Il transporte les montagnes, sans qu'elles le sachent, il les renverse dans sa colère;
Who removeth the mountains, and they know not: who overturneth them in his anger.
6 il secoue la terre sur sa base, et ses colonnes sont ébranlées.
Who shaketh the earth out of her place, and its pillars tremble.
7 Il commande au soleil, et le soleil ne se lève pas; il met un sceau sur les étoiles.
Who commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.
8 Seul, il étend les cieux, il marche sur les hauteurs de la mer.
Who alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.
9 Il a créé la Grande Ourse, Orion, les Pléiades, et les régions du ciel austral.
Who maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.
10 Il fait des merveilles qu'on ne peut sonder, des prodiges qu'on ne saurait compter.
Who doeth great things past finding out; yes, and wonders without number.
11 Voici qu'il passe près de moi, et je ne le vois pas; il s'éloigne, sans que je l'aperçoive.
Lo, he goeth by me, and I see [him] not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.
12 S'il ravit une proie, qui s'y opposera, qui lui dira: « Que fais-tu? »
Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say to him, What doest thou?
13 Dieu! Rien ne fléchit sa colère; devant lui s'inclinent les légions d'orgueil.
[If] God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him.
14 Et moi je songerais à lui répondre, à choisir mes paroles pour discuter avec lui!
How much less shall I answer him, [and] choose out my words [to reason] with him?
15 Aurais-je pour moi la justice, je ne répondrais pas; j'implorerais la clémence de mon juge.
Whom, though I were righteous, [yet] would I not answer, [but] I would make supplication to my judge.
16 Même s'il se rendait à mon appel, je ne croirais pas qu'il eût écouté ma voix:
If I had called, and he had answered me; [yet] I would not believe that he had hearkened to my voice.
17 lui qui me brise comme dans un tourbillon, et multiplie mes blessures sans motif;
For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.
18 qui ne me laisse point respirer, et me rassasie d'amertume.
He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.
19 S'agit-il de force, voici qu'il est fort, s'agit-il de droit, il dit: « Qui m'assigne? »
If [I speak] of strength, lo, [he is] strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time [to plead]?
20 Serais-je irréprochable, ma bouche même me condamnerait; serais-je innocent, elle me déclarerait pervers.
If I justify myself, my own mouth will condemn me: [if I say], I [am] perfect, that also will prove me perverse.
21 Innocent! Je le suis; je ne tiens pas à l'existence, et la vie m'est à charge.
[Though] I [were] perfect, [yet] would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.
22 Il m'importe après tout; c'est pourquoi j'ai dit: « Il fait périr également le juste et l'impie. »
This [is] one [thing], therefore I said [it], he destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.
23 Si du moins le fléau tuait d'un seul coup! Hélas! il se rit des épreuves de l'innocent!
If the scourge shall slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.
24 La terre est livrée aux mains du méchant, Dieu voile la face de ses juges: si ce n'est pas lui, qui est-ce donc?
The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of its judges; if not, where, [and] who [is] he?
25 Mes jours sont plus rapides qu'un courrier, ils fuient sans avoir vu le bonheur;
Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.
26 ils passent comme la barque de jonc, comme l'aigle qui fond sur sa proie.
They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle [that] hasteth to the prey.
27 Si je dis: « Je veux oublier ma plainte, quitter mon air triste, prendre un air joyeux, »
If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort [myself]:
28 je tremble pour toutes mes douleurs, je sais que tu ne me tiendras pas pour innocent.
I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.
29 Je serai jugé coupable: pourquoi prendre une peine inutile?
[If] I am wicked, why then do I labor in vain?
30 Quand je me laverais dans la neige, quand je purifierais mes mains avec le bor,
If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;
31 tu me plongerais dans la fange, et mes vêtements m'auraient en horreur.
Yet wilt thou plunge me in the ditch, and my own clothes shall abhor me.
32 Dieu n'est pas un homme comme moi, pour que je lui réponde, pour que nous comparaissions ensemble en justice.
For [he is] not a man, as I [am], [that] I should answer him, [and] we should come together in judgment.
33 Il n'y a pas entre nous d'arbitre qui pose sa main sur nous deux.
Neither is there any judge between us, [that] might lay his hand upon us both.
34 Qu'il retire sa verge de dessus moi, que ses terreurs cessent de m'épouvanter:
Let him take away his rod from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
35 alors je parlerai sans le craindre; autrement, je ne suis point à moi-même.
[Then] would I speak, and not fear him; but [it is] not so with me.
