Job 36
1 Éliu reprit encore une fois et dit:
Then continued Elihu, and said,
2 Attends un peu, et je t’instruirai, car j’ai des paroles encore pour la cause de Dieu;
Wait for me a little, and I will instruct thee; for [I have] still some words on God's behalf.
3 je prendrai mes raisons de haut, et je montrerai la justice de mon Créateur.
I will lift up my knowledge for him who is afar, and for my Maker will I obtain righteousness.
4 Sois-en sûr, mes discours sont exempts de mensonge; devant toi est un homme sincère en ses jugements.
For truly no falsehood is [in] my words: one that is upright in [his] opinions [dealeth now] with thee.
5 Voici que Dieu est puissant, mais il ne dédaigne personne; il est puissant par la force de son intelligence.
Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength of intellect.
6 Il ne laisse pas vivre le méchant, et il fait justice aux malheureux.
He permitteth not the wicked to live; but he procureth justice for the afflicted.
7 Il ne détourne pas ses yeux des justes; il les fait asseoir sur le trône avec les rois, il les établit pour toujours, et ils sont exaltés.
He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous; but [he placeth them] with kings on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted.
8 Viennent-ils à tomber dans les fers, sont-ils pris dans les liens du malheur,
And if they be bound in fetters, and if they be entangled in the cords of affliction:
9 il leur dénonce leurs œuvres, leurs fautes causées par l’orgueil.
Then doth he tell them of their work, and of their transgressions, when they had become strong.
10 Il ouvre leur oreille à la réprimande, il les exhorte à se détourner du mal.
And he openeth thus their ear to correction, and saith that they should return from wrong-doing.
11 S’ils écoutent et se soumettent, ils achèvent leurs jours dans le bonheur, et leurs années dans les délices.
If they hearken and serve [him], they will spend their days in happiness, and their years in pleasures.
12 Mais s’ils n’écoutent pas, ils périssent par le glaive, ils meurent dans leur aveuglement.
But if they hearken not, they will pass away through the sword, and they will perish in want of knowledge.
13 Les cœurs impies se livrent à la colère, ils ne crient pas vers Dieu quand il les met dans les chaînes.
But the hypocrites in heart persevere in wrath; they will not offer entreaty when he bindeth them:
14 Aussi meurent-ils dans leur jeunesse, et leur vie se flétrit comme celle des infâmes.
Their soul will die in youth, and their life, among the incestuous.
15 Mais Dieu sauve le malheureux dans sa misère, il l’instruit par la souffrance.
He delivereth the afflicted through his affliction, and openeth through oppression his ear.
16 Toi aussi, il te retirera de la détresse, pour te mettre au large, en pleine liberté, et ta table sera dressée et chargée de mets succulents.
And also thee hath he incited away from the jaws of distress into a wide space, on the site of which there is no straitness; and what is set on thy table is full of fatness.
17 Mais si tu combles la mesure de l’impie, tu en porteras la sentence et la peine.
But if thou art full of the judgment of the wicked: [divine] judgment and decree will support each other.
18 Crains que Dieu irrité ne t’inflige un châtiment, et que tes riches offrandes ne t’égarent.
For there would be fury, If aught were to incite thee to utter an abundance [of rebellious words]; and the greatness of the infliction must not mislead thee.
19 Tes cris te tireront-ils de la détresse, et même toutes les ressources de la force?
Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold ore, nor all the highest forces of strength.
20 Ne soupire pas après la nuit, durant laquelle les peuples sont anéantis sur place.
Desire then not eagerly the night, when nations pass away in their place.
21 Prends garde de te tourner vers l’iniquité, car tu la préfères à l’affliction.
Take heed, turn not thyself to wrong-doing, so that thou wouldst choose this because of [thy] affliction.
22 Vois: Dieu est sublime dans sa puissance! Quel maître est semblable à lui?
Behold, God is exalted by his power: who is an instructer like him?
23 Qui lui trace la voie qu’il doit suivre? Qui peut lui dire: « Tu as mal fait? »
Who hath given him a charge concerning his way? or who hath ever said, Thou hast acted unjustly?
24 Songe plutôt à glorifier ses œuvres, que les hommes célèbrent dans leurs chants.
Reflect, that thou shouldst magnify his work, which [other] men have beheld.
25 Tout homme les admire, le mortel les contemple de loin.
All men have looked at it [with astonishment]; the mortal gazeth at it from afar.
26 Dieu est grand au-dessus de toute science, le nombre de ses années est impénétrable.
Behold, God is great, and we comprehend him not, the number of his years can truly not be searched out.
27 Il attire les gouttes d’eau, qui se répandent en pluie sous leur poids.
For he taketh away drops of water, which are purified into rain in his mist:
28 Les nuées la laissent couler, et tomber sur la masse des hommes.
These drop down out of the skies; they distil upon the multitude of men.
29 Qui comprendra l’expansion des nuages, et le fracas de la tente du Très-Haut?
But [what man] can understand the outspreadings of the clouds? the tumult of his tabernacle?
30 Tantôt il étend autour de lui sa lumière, tantôt il se cache comme au fond de la mer.
Behold, he spreadeth out over it his light, and covereth up the roots of the sea.
31 C’est ainsi qu’il exerce sa justice sur les peuples, et qu’il donne la nourriture avec abondance.
For by means of them he judgeth nations, he giveth food in superfluity.
32 Il prend la lumière dans ses mains, et lui marque le but à atteindre.
[His] hands he covereth with light; and he commandeth it to strike the one who striveth against him.
33 Son tonnerre l’annonce, l’effroi des troupeaux annonce son approche.
The noise of his storm telleth of it, yea, the cattle also, of the rising tempest.
