Job 34
1 Éliu reprit et dit:
And Elihu answereth and saith:
2 Sages, écoutez mes discours; hommes intelligents, prêtez-moi l’oreille.
Hear, O wise men, my words, And, O knowing ones, give ear to me.
3 Car l’oreille juge les paroles, comme le palais discerne les aliments.
For the ear doth try words, And the palate tasteth to eat.
4 Tâchons de discerner ce qui est juste; cherchons entre nous ce qui est bon.
Judgment let us choose for ourselves, Let us know among ourselves what [is] good.
5 Job a dit: « Je suis innocent, et Dieu me refuse justice.
For Job hath said, 'I have been righteous, And God hath turned aside my right,
6 Quand je soutiens mon droit, je passe pour menteur; ma plaie est douloureuse, sans que j’aie péché. »
Against my right do I lie? Mortal [is] mine arrow — without transgression.'
7 Y a-t-il un homme semblable à Job? Il boit le blasphème comme l’eau!
Who [is] a man like Job? He drinketh scoffing like water,
8 Il s’associe aux artisans d’iniquité, il marche avec les hommes pervers.
And he hath travelled for company With workers of iniquity, So as to go with men of wickedness.
9 Car il a dit: « Il ne sert de rien à l’homme de chercher la faveur de Dieu. »
For he hath said, 'It doth not profit a man, When he delighteth himself with God.'
10 Écoutez-moi donc, hommes sensés: Loin de Dieu l’iniquité! Loin du Tout-Puissant l’injustice!
Therefore, O men of heart, hearken to me; Far be it from God to do wickedness, And [from] the Mighty to do perverseness:
11 Il rend à l’homme selon ses œuvres, il rétribue chacun selon ses voies.
For the work of man he repayeth to him, And according to the path of each He doth cause him to find.
12 Non, certes, Dieu ne commet pas l’iniquité, le Tout-Puissant ne viole pas la justice.
Yea, truly, God doth not do wickedly, And the Mighty doth not pervert judgment.
13 Qui lui a remis le gouvernement de la terre? Qui lui a confié l’univers?
Who hath inspected for Himself the earth? And who hath placed all the habitable world?
14 S’il ne pensait qu’à lui-même, s’il retirait à lui son esprit et son souffle,
If He doth set on him His heart, His spirit and his breath unto Him He gathereth.
15 toute chair expirerait à l’instant, et l’homme retournerait à la poussière.
Expire doth all flesh together, And man to dust returneth.
16 Si tu as de l’intelligence, écoute ceci; prête l’oreille au son de mes paroles:
And if [there is] understanding, hear this, Give ear to the voice of my words.
17 Un ennemi de la justice aurait-il le suprême pouvoir? Oses-tu condamner le Juste, le Puissant,
Yea, doth one hating justice govern? Or the Most Just dost thou condemn?
18 qui dit à un roi: « Vaurien! » aux princes: « Pervers! »
Who hath said to a king — 'Worthless,' Unto princes — 'Wicked?'
19 qui ne fait point acception de la personne des grands, qui ne regarde pas le riche plus que le pauvre, parce que tous sont l’ouvrage de ses mains?
That hath not accepted the person of princes, Nor hath known the rich before the poor, For a work of His hands [are] all of them.
20 En un instant ils périssent, au milieu de la nuit, les peuples chancellent et disparaissent; le puissant est emporté sans main d’homme.
[In] a moment they die, and at midnight Shake do people, and they pass away, And they remove the mighty without hand.
21 Car les yeux de Dieu sont ouverts sur les voies de l’homme, il voit distinctement tous ses pas.
For His eyes [are] on the ways of each, And all his steps He doth see.
22 Il n’y a ni ténèbres ni ombre de la mort, où puissent se cacher ceux qui commettent l’iniquité.
There is no darkness nor death-shade, For workers of iniquity to be hidden there;
23 Il n’a pas besoin de regarder un homme deux fois, pour l’amener au jugement avec lui.
For He doth not suffer man any more, To go unto God in judgment,
24 Il brise les puissants sans enquête, et il en met d’autres à leur place.
He breaketh the mighty — no searching! And He appointeth others in their stead.
25 Il connaît donc leurs œuvres; il les renverse de nuit, et ils sont écrasés.
Therefore He knoweth their works, And He hath overturned by night, And they are bruised.
26 Il les frappe comme des impies, en un lieu où on les regarde,
As wicked He hath stricken them, In the place of beholders.
27 parce qu’en se détournant de lui, en refusant de connaître toutes ses voies,
Because that against right They have turned aside from after Him, And none of His ways have considered wisely,
28 ils ont fait monter vers lui le cri du pauvre, ils l’ont rendu attentif au cri des malheureux.
To cause to come in unto Him The cry of the poor, And the cry of the afflicted He heareth.
29 S’il accorde la paix, qui le trouvera mauvais; s’il cache son visage, qui pourra le contempler, qu’il soit peuple ou homme celui qu’il traite ainsi,
And He giveth rest, and who maketh wrong? And hideth the face, and who beholdeth it? And in reference to a nation and to a man, [It is] the same.
30 pour mettre fin au règne de l’impie, pour qu’il ne soit plus un piège pour le peuple?
From the reigning of a profane man, From the snares of a people;
31 Or avait-il dit à Dieu: « J’ai été châtié, je ne pécherai plus;
For unto God hath any said: 'I have taken away, I do not corruptly,
32 montre-moi ce que j’ignore; si j’ai commis l’iniquité, je ne le ferai plus? »
Besides [that which] I see, shew Thou me, If iniquity I have done — I do not add?'
33 Est-ce d’après ton avis que Dieu doit rendre la justice de sorte que tu puisses rejeter son jugement? Choisis à ton gré, et non pas moi; ce que tu sais, expose-le.
By thee doth He recompense, That thou hast refused — That thou dost choose, and not I? And what thou hast known, speak.
34 Les gens sensés me diront, ainsi que l’homme sage qui m’écoute:
Let men of heart say to me, And a wise man is hearkening to me.
35 « Job a parlé sans intelligence, et ses discours sont dépourvus de sagesse.
Job — not with knowledge doth he speak, And his words [are] not with wisdom.
36 Eh bien, que Job soit éprouvé jusqu’au bout, puisque ses réponses sont celles d’un impie!
My Father! let Job be tried — unto victory, Because of answers for men of iniquity,
37 Car à l’offense il ajoute la révolte; il bat des mains au milieu de nous, il multiplie ses propos contre Dieu. »
For he doth add to his sin, Transgression among us he vomiteth, And multiplieth his sayings to God.
