Job 31
1 J’avais fait un pacte avec mes yeux, et comment aurais-je arrêté mes regards sur une vierge. —
I made a covenant with mine eyes; and how should I fix my regard upon a maid?
2 Quelle part, me disais-je, Dieu me réserverait-il d’en haut? Quel sort le Tout-Puissant me ferait-il de son ciel?
For what would have been [my] portion of God from above, and what the heritage of the Almighty from on high?
3 La ruine n’est-elle pas pour le méchant, et le malheur pour les artisans d’iniquité?
Is not calamity for the unrighteous? and misfortune for the workers of iniquity?
4 Dieu ne connaît-il pas mes voies, ne compte-t-il pas tous mes pas?
Doth not he see my ways, and number all my steps?
5 Si j’ai marché dans le sentier du mensonge, si mon pied a couru après la fraude, —
If I have walked with falsehood, and my foot hath hasted to deceit,
6 que Dieu me pèse dans de justes balances, et il reconnaîtra mon innocence!
(Let me be weighed in an even balance, and God will take knowledge of my blamelessness; )
7 Si mes pas se sont écartés du droit chemin, si mon cœur a suivi mes yeux, si quelque souillure s’est attachée à mes mains, —
If my step have turned out of the way, and my heart followed mine eyes, and if any blot cleaveth to my hands;
8 que je sème, et qu’un autre mange, que mes rejetons soient déracinés!
Let me sow, and another eat; and let mine offspring be rooted out.
9 Si mon cœur a été séduit par une femme, si j’ai fait le guet à la porte de mon prochain, —
If my heart have been enticed unto a woman, so that I laid wait at my neighbour's door,
10 que ma femme tourne la meule pour un autre, que des étrangers la déshonorent!
Let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her.
11 Car c’est là un crime horrible, un forfait que punissent les juges;
For this is an infamy; yea, it is an iniquity [to be judged by] the judges:
12 un feu qui dévore jusqu’à la ruine, qui aurait détruit tous mes biens.
For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.
13 Si j’ai méconnu le droit de mon serviteur ou de ma servante, quand ils étaient en contestation avec moi: —
If I have despised the cause of my bondman or of my bondmaid, when they contended with me,
14 Que faire, quand Dieu se lèvera? Au jour de sa visite, que lui répondrai-je?
What then should I do when God riseth up? and if he visited, what should I answer him?
15 Celui qui m’a fait dans le sein de ma mère ne l’a-t-il pas fait aussi? Un même Créateur ne nous a-t-il pas formés?
Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not One fashion us in the womb?
16 Si j’ai refusé aux pauvres ce qu’ils désiraient, si j’ai fait languir les yeux de la veuve,
If I have withheld the poor from [their] desire, or caused the eyes of the widow to fail;
17 si j’ai mangé seul mon morceau de pain, sans que l’orphelin en ait eu sa part: —
Or have eaten my morsel alone, so that the fatherless ate not thereof,
18 dès mon enfance il m’a gardé comme un père; dès ma naissance il a guidé mes pas.
(For from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have guided the [widow] from my mother's womb; )
19 Si j’ai vu le malheureux périr sans vêtements, l’indigent manquer de couverture,
If I have seen any perishing for want of clothing, or any needy without covering;
20 sans que ses reins m’aient béni, sans que la toison de mes agneaux l’ait réchauffé;
If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my lambs;
21 si j’ai levé la main contre l’orphelin, parce que je me voyais un appui dans les juges, —
If I have lifted up my hand against an orphan, because I saw my help in the gate:
22 que mon épaule se détache du tronc, que mon bras soit arraché de l’humérus.
[Then] let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone!
23 Car je crains la vengeance de Dieu, et devant sa majesté je ne puis subsister.
For calamity from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his excellency I was powerless.
24 Si j’ai mis dans l’or mon assurance, si j’ai dit à l’or pur: « Tu es mon espoir; »
If I have made gold my hope, or said to the fine gold, My confidence!
25 si je me suis réjoui de l’abondance de mes biens, des trésors amassés par mes mains;
If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;
26 si, en voyant le soleil jeter ses feux, et la lune s’avancer dans sa splendeur,
If I beheld the sun when it shone, or the moon walking in brightness,
27 mon cœur s’est laissé séduire en secret, si ma main s’est portée à ma bouche, —
And my heart have been secretly enticed, so that my mouth kissed my hand:
28 c’est là encore un crime que punit le juge; j’aurais renié le Dieu très-haut.
This also would be an iniquity for the judge, for I should have denied the God who is above.
29 Si j’ai été joyeux de la ruine de mon ennemi, si j’ai tressailli d’allégresse quand le malheur l’a frappé: —
If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, and exulted when evil befell him;
30 Non, je n’ai pas permis à ma langue de pécher, en demandant sa mort avec imprécation!…
(Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse; )
31 Si les gens de ma tente ne disaient pas: « Où trouver quelqu’un qui ne soit pas rassasiés de sa table? »
If the men of my tent said not, Who shall find one that hath not been satisfied with his meat? —
32 si l’étranger passait la nuit en dehors, si je n’ouvrais pas la porte au voyageur!…
The stranger did not lodge without; I opened my doors to the pathway.
33 Si j’ai, comme font les hommes, déguisé mes fautes, et renfermé mes iniquités dans mon sein,
If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom,
34 par peur de la grande assemblée, par crainte du mépris des familles, au point de me taire, et de n’oser franchir le seuil de ma porte!…
Because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and went not out of the door, ...
35 Oh! Qui me fera trouver quelqu’un qui m’écoute? Voilà ma signature: que le Tout-Puissant me réponde! Que mon adversaire écrive aussi sa cédule!
Oh that I had one to hear me! Behold my signature: let the Almighty answer me! And let mine opponent write an accusation!
36 On verra si je ne la mets pas sur mon épaule, si je n’en ceins pas mon front comme d’un diadème!
Would I not take it upon my shoulder? I would bind it on to me [as] a crown;
37 Je rendrai compte à mon juge de tous mes pas, je m’approcherai de lui comme un prince.
I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I come near to him.
38 Si ma terre crie contre moi, si j’ai fait pleurer ses sillons;
If my land cry out against me, and its furrows weep together;
39 si j’ai mangé ses produits sans l’avoir payée, si je l’ai arrachée à ses légitimes possesseurs, —
If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, and have tormented to death the souls of its owners:
40 qu’au lieu de froment il y naisse des épines, et de l’ivraie au lieu d’orge! Ici finissent les discours de Job.
Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and tares instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
