Job 29
1 Job reprit encore son discours et dit:
And Job again took up his measure, and said,
2 Oh! Qui me rendra les mois d’autrefois, les jours où Dieu veillait à ma garde;
Oh that it were with me as in the months of old, as in the days, when, GOD, used to watch over me;
3 quand sa lampe brillait sur ma tête, et que sa lumière me guidait dans les ténèbres!
When his lamp shone over my head, by whose light, I could go through darkness;
4 Tel que j’étais aux jours de mon âge mûr, quand Dieu me visitait familièrement dans ma tente,
As I was, in the days of my prime, when, the intimacy of GOD, was over my tent;
5 quand le Tout-Puissant était encore avec moi, et que mes fils m’entouraient;
While yet the Almighty was with me, round about me, were my young men;
6 quand je lavais mes pieds dans le lait, et que le rocher me versait des flots d’huile!
When my steps were bathed in milk, and, the rock, poured out beside me, rivulets of oil:
7 Lorsque je sortais pour me rendre à la porte de la ville, et que j’établissais mon siège sur la place publique,
When I went out to the gate unto the city, in the open place, made ready my seat,
8 en me voyant, les jeunes gens se cachaient, les vieillards se levaient et se tenaient debout.
Young men saw me, and hid themselves, and, the aged, arose—they stood;
9 Les princes retenaient leurs paroles, et mettaient leur main sur la bouche.
Rulers, restrained speech, and, a hand, laid they on their mouth;
10 La voix des chefs restait muette, leur langue s’attachait à leur palais.
The voice of nobles, was hushed, and their tongue to their palate, did cleave;
11 L’oreille qui m’entendait me proclamait heureux, l’œil qui me voyait me rendait témoignage.
When, the ear, heard, then it pronounced me happy, When, the eye, saw, then it bare me witness;
12 Car je sauvais le pauvre qui implorait du secours, et l’orphelin dénué de tout appui.
Because I used to deliver the oppressed who was crying out for aid, the fatherless also, and him that had no helper;
13 La bénédiction de celui qui allait périr venait sur moi, je remplissais de joie le cœur de la veuve.
The blessing of him that was ready to perish, upon me was wont to descend, and, the heart of the widow, caused I to sing for joy;
14 Je me revêtais de la justice comme d’un vêtement, mon équité était mon manteau et mon turban.
Righteousness, I put on, and it clothed me, Like a robe and turban, was my, justice;
15 J’étais l’œil de l’aveugle, et le pied du boiteux.
Eyes, became I to the, blind, and, feet to the lame, was, I!
16 J’étais le père des pauvres, j’examinais avec soin la cause de l’inconnu.
A father, was, I, to the needy, and, as for the cause which I knew not, I used to search it out;
17 Je brisais la mâchoire de l’injuste, et j’arrachais sa proie d’entre les dents.
And I shivered the fangs of the perverse, —and, out of his teeth, I tare the prey.
18 Je disais: « Je mourrai dans mon nid, j’aurai des jours nombreux comme le sable.
Then said I, Like a stem, shall I grow old, yea, as the sand, shall I multiply days:
19 Mes racines s’étendent vers les eaux, la rosée passe la nuit dans mon feuillage.
My root, is laid open to the waters, and, the dew, shall lodge for the night in my boughs;
20 Ma gloire reverdira sans cesse, et mon arc reprendra sa vigueur dans ma main. »
Mine honour, shall be young again with me, and, my bow, in my hand, be renewed.
21 On m’écoutait et l’on attendait, on recueillait en silence mon avis.
To me, men hearkened, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel;
22 Après que j’avais parlé, personne n’ajoutait rien; ma parole coulait sur eux comme la rosée.
After I had spoken, they spake not again, and, upon them, used my speech to drop;
23 Ils m’attendaient comme on attend la pluie; ils ouvraient la bouche comme aux ondées du printemps.
And they waited, as for rain, for me, and, their mouths, they opened wide for the spring-rain;
24 Si je leur souriais, ils ne pouvaient le croire; ils recueillaient avidement ce signe de faveur.
I laughed at them—they lost confidence, and, the light of my countenance, they suffered not to fail;
25 Quand j’allais vers eux, j’avais la première place, je siégeais comme un roi entouré de sa troupe, comme un consolateur au milieu des affligés.
I chose out their way, and sat chief, —and abode, as king, in an army, as one who, to mourners, giveth comfort.
