Jérémie 14
1 Parole de Yahweh qui fut adressée à Jérémie à l’occasion de la sécheresse.
The word of Jehovah that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought.
2 Juda est dans le deuil; ses portes languissent; elles gisent désolées sur la terre, et le cri de Jérusalem s’élève.
Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish, they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem goeth up.
3 Les grands envoient les petits chercher de l’eau; ceux-ci vont aux citernes, ils ne trouvent pas d’eau, ils reviennent avec leurs vases vides; ils sont confus et honteux, ils se couvrent la tête.
And their nobles send their little ones for water: they come to the pits, they find no water; they return with their vessels empty; they are ashamed, they are confounded, and have covered their heads.
4 À cause du sol crevassé, parce qu’il n’y a pas eu de pluie sur la terre, les laboureurs sont confondus, ils se couvrent la tête.
Because the ground is chapt, for there hath been no rain on the earth, the ploughmen are ashamed, they cover their heads.
5 Même la biche dans la campagne met bas et abandonne ses petits, parce qu’il n’y a pas d’herbe.
For the hind also calveth in the field, and forsaketh [its young], because there is no grass.
6 Les onagres se tiennent sur les hauteurs, aspirant l’air comme des chacals; leurs yeux s’éteignent, parce qu’il n’y a pas de verdure.
And the wild asses stand on the heights, they snuff up the wind like jackals; their eyes fail, because there is no herbage.
7 Si nos iniquités témoignent contre nous, Yahweh, agis pour l’honneur de ton nom; car nos infidélités sont nombreuses; nous avons péché contre toi.
Jehovah, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou act for thy name's sake; for our backslidings are many — we have sinned against thee.
8 Ô toi, l’espérance d’Israël, son libérateur au temps de la détresse, pourquoi serais-tu comme un étranger dans le pays, comme un voyageur qui y dresse sa tente pour la nuit?
Thou hope of Israel, its Saviour in the time of trouble, why wilt thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a traveller that turneth aside to stay a night?
9 Pourquoi serais-tu comme un homme éperdu, comme un héros impuissant à délivrer? Pourtant tu habites au milieu de nous, Yahweh; ton nom est invoqué sur nous, ne nous abandonne pas! —
Why wilt thou be as a man astonished, as a mighty man that cannot save? Yet thou, Jehovah, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name: leave us not.
10 Ainsi parle Yahweh au sujet de ce peuple: Oui, ils aiment à courir çà et là, et ils ne savent pas retenir leurs pieds. Yahweh ne trouve plus de plaisir en eux; Il va maintenant se souvenir de leurs iniquités et châtier leurs péchés.
Thus saith Jehovah to this people: Even so have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet; and Jehovah hath no delight in them: now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.
11 Et Yahweh me dit: « N’intercède pas en faveur de ce peuple.
And Jehovah said unto me, Pray not for this people for their good.
12 Quand ils jeûneront, je n’écouterai pas leurs supplications; quand ils m’offriront des holocaustes et des offrandes, je ne les agréerai pas; car par l’épée, la famine et la peste je veux les détruire. »
When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer up burnt-offering and oblation, I will not accept them: for I will consume them by sword, and by famine, and by pestilence.
13 Et je répondis: « Ah! Seigneur, Yahweh, voici que les prophètes leur disent: Vous ne verrez point d’épée, et vous n’aurez point de famine; mais je vous donnerai une paix assurée dans ce lieu-ci. »
And I said, Alas, Lord Jehovah! Behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; for I will give you assured peace in this place.
14 Et Yahweh me dit: « C’est le mensonge que les prophètes prophétisent en mon nom: je ne les ai pas envoyés, je ne leur ai point donné d’ordre, et je ne leur ai point parlé; visions mensongères, vaines divinations, imposture de leur propre cœur, voilà ce qu’ils vous prophétisent. »
And Jehovah said unto me, The prophets prophesy falsehood in my name; I have not sent them, neither have I commanded them, nor spoken unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision, and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.
15 C’est pourquoi ainsi parle Yahweh: Au sujet des prophètes qui prophétisent en mon nom sans que je les aie envoyés, et qui disent: « D’épée et de famine il n’y aura pas dans ce pays!… » Ils périront par l’épée et par la famine, ces prophètes-là!
Therefore thus saith Jehovah concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, and who say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land: By sword and by famine shall those prophets be consumed;
16 Et les gens auxquels ils prophétisent seront jetés dans les rues de Jérusalem, victimes de la famine et de l’épée, et il n’y aura personne pour les ensevelir, eux, leurs femmes, leurs fils et leurs filles et je verserai sur eux leur méchanceté.
and the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, because of the famine and the sword; and there shall be none to bury them, them, their wives, and their sons, and their daughters; and I will pour their wickedness upon them.
17 Et tu leur diras cette parole: Mes yeux se fondront en larmes la nuit et le jour, sans arrêt; car la vierge, fille de mon peuple, va être frappée d’un grand désastre, d’une plaie très douloureuse.
And thou shalt say this word unto them: Let mine eyes run down with tears, night and day, and not cease; for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow.
18 Si je vais dans les champs, voici des hommes que le glaive a percés; si j’entre dans la ville, voilà les douleurs de la faim. Le prophète lui-même et le prêtre sont errants, vers un pays qu’ils ne connaissaient pas.
If I go forth into the field, behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, behold them that pine away with famine! For both prophet and priest shall go about into a land that they know not.
19 As-tu donc entièrement rejeté Juda? Ton âme a-t-elle pris Sion en dégoût? Pourquoi nous frappes-tu sans qu’il y ait pour nous de guérison? Nous attendions la paix, et il ne vient rien de bon; le temps de la guérison, et voici l’épouvante.
— Hast thou then utterly rejected Judah? Doth thy soul loathe Zion? Why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? Peace is looked for, and there is no good, — and a time of healing, and behold terror!
20 Nous reconnaissons, ô Yahweh, notre méchanceté, l’iniquité de nos pères, car nous avons péché contre toi.
Jehovah, we acknowledge our wickedness, the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against thee.
21 À cause de ton nom, ne dédaigne pas, ne profane pas le trône de ta gloire; souviens-toi, ne romps pas ton alliance avec nous.
For thy name's sake, do not spurn [us], do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.
22 Parmi les vaines idoles des nations, en est-il qui fasse pleuvoir? Est-ce le ciel qui donnera les ondées? N’est-ce pas toi, Yahweh, notre Dieu? Nous espérons en toi, car c’est toi qui fais toutes ces choses.
Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? Art not thou HE, Jehovah, our God? And we wait upon thee; for thou hast made all these things.
