Exode 1
1 Voici les noms des enfants d’Israël venus en Égypte; — ils y vinrent avec Jacob, chacun avec sa famille —:
These ben the names of the sones of Israel, that entriden into Egipt with Jacob; alle entriden with her housis;
2 Ruben, Siméon, Lévi, Juda,
Ruben, Symeon,
3 Issachar, Zabulon, Benjamin,
Leuy, Judas, Isachar, Zabulon, and Benjamin,
4 Dan, Nephtali, Gad et Aser.
Dan, and Neptalim, Gad, and Aser.
5 Toutes les personnes issues de Jacob étaient au nombre de soixante-dix, et Joseph était déjà en Égypte.
Therfor alle the soules of hem that yeden out of `the hipe of Jacob weren seuenti and fyue.
6 Joseph mourut, ainsi que tous ses frères et toute cette génération.
Forsothe Joseph was in Egipt; and whanne he was deed, and alle hise brithren, and al his kynrede,
7 Les enfants d’Israël furent féconds et multiplièrent; ils devinrent nombreux et très puissants, et le pays en fut rempli.
the sones of Israel encreessiden, and weren multiplied as buriounnyng, and thei weren maad strong greetli, and filliden the lond.
8 Il s’éleva sur l’Égypte un nouveau roi qui ne connaissait pas Joseph.
A newe kyng, that knewe not Joseph, roos in the meene tyme on Egipt, and seide to his puple, Lo!
9 Il dit à son peuple: « Voici que les enfants d’Israël forment un peuple plus nombreux et plus puissant que nous.
the puple of the sones of Israel is myche, and strongere than we;
10 Allons! Prenons des précautions contre lui, de peur qu’il ne s’accroisse, et que, une guerre survenant, il ne se joigne à nos ennemis pour nous combattre, et ne sorte ensuite du pays. »
come ye, wiseli oppresse we it, lest perauenture it be multiplied; and lest, if batel risith ayens vs, it be addid to oure enemyes, and go out of the lond, whanne we ben ouercomun.
11 Les Égyptiens établirent donc sur Israël des chefs de corvée, afin de l’accabler par des travaux pénibles. C’est ainsi qu’il bâtit des villes pour servir de magasins à Pharaon, savoir Pithom et Ramsès.
And so he made maistris of werkis souereyns to hem, that thei schulden turmente hem with chargis. And thei maden citees of tabernaclis to Farao, Fiton, and Ramesses.
12 Mais plus on l’accablait, plus il multipliait et s’accroissait, et l’on prit en aversion les enfants d’Israël.
And bi hou myche thei oppressiden hem, bi so myche thei weren multiplied, and encreessiden more.
13 Les Égyptiens firent travailler les enfants d’Israël par force;
And Egipcians hatiden the sones of Israel, and turmentiden, and scorneden hem;
14 ils leur rendaient la vie amère par de rudes travaux, mortier, briques et toute sorte de travaux des champs, tout le travail qu’ils leur imposaient avec dureté.
and brouyten her lijf to bitternesse bi hard werkis of cley and to tijl stoon, and bi al seruage, bi which thei weren oppressid in the werkis of erthe.
15 Le roi d’Égypte parla aussi aux sages-femmes des Hébreux, dont l’une se nommait Séphora, et l’autre Phua.
Forsothe the kyng of Egipt seide to the mydwyues of Ebrews, of whiche oon was clepid Sefora, the tother Fua;
16 Il leur dit: « Quand vous accoucherez les femmes des Hébreux, et que vous les verrez sur le double siège, si c’est un fils, faites-le mourir; si c’est une fille, elle peut vivre. »
and he commaundide to hem, Whanne ye schulen do the office of medewyues to Ebrew wymmen, and the tyme of childberyng schal come, if it is a knaue child, sle ye him; if it is a womman, kepe ye.
17 Mais les sages-femmes craignirent Dieu, et ne firent pas comme leur avait dit le roi d’Égypte; elles laissèrent vivre les garçons.
Forsothe the medewyues dredden God, and diden not bi the comaundement of the kyng of Egipt, but kepten knaue children.
18 Le roi d’Égypte fit appeler les sages-femmes et leur dit: « Pourquoi avez-vous agi ainsi, et avez-vous laissé vivre les garçons? »
To whiche clepid to hym the kyng seide, What is this thing which ye wolden do, that ye wolden kepe the children?
19 Les sages-femmes répondirent à Pharaon: « C’est que les femmes des Hébreux ne ressemblent pas aux Égyptiennes: elles sont vigoureuses, et elles accouchent avant l’arrivée de la sage-femme. »
Whiche answeriden, Ebrew wymmen ben not as the wymmen of Egipt, for thei han kunnyng of the craft of medewijf, and childen bifore that we comen to hem.
20 Et Dieu fit du bien aux sages-femmes, et le peuple devint nombreux et extrêmement fort.
Therfor God dide wel to medewyues; and the puple encreesside, and was coumfortid greetli.
21 Parce que les sages-femmes avaient craint Dieu, Dieu fit prospérer leur maison.
And for the mydewyues dredden God, he bildide `housis to hem.
22 Alors Pharaon donna cet ordre à tout son peuple: « Vous jetterez dans le fleuve tout fils qui naîtra et vous laisserez vivre toutes les filles. »
Therfor Farao comaundide al his puple, and seide, What euer thing of male kynde is borun to Ebrewis, `caste ye into the flood; what euer thing of wymmen kynde, kepe ye.
