Exode 32
1 Le peuple, voyant que Moïse tardait à descendre de la montagne, s’assembla autour d’Aaron et lui dit: « Allons, fais-nous un dieu qui marche devant nous. Car pour ce Moïse, l’homme qui nous a fait monter du pays d’Égypte, nous ne savons ce qu’il en est devenu. »
And the people see that Moses is delaying to come down from the mountain, and the people assemble against Aaron, and say to him, “Rise, make gods for us, who go before us, for this Moses—the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt—we have not known what has happened to him.”
2 Aaron leur dit: « Ôtez les anneaux d’or qui sont aux oreilles de vos femmes, de vos fils et de vos filles, et apportez-les-moi. »
And Aaron says to them, “Break off the rings of gold which [are] in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring [them] to me”;
3 Tout le monde ôta les anneaux d’or qu’ils avaient aux oreilles, et ils les apportèrent à Aaron.
and all the people break off the rings of gold which [are] in their ears, and bring [them] to Aaron,
4 Il les reçut de leurs mains, façonna l’or au burin, et en fit un veau en fonte. Et ils dirent: « Israël, voici ton Dieu, qui t’a fait monter du pays d’Égypte. »
and he receives [it] from their hand, and fashions it with an engraving tool, and makes it [into] a molten calf, and they say, “These [are] your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”
5 Ayant vu cela, Aaron construisit un autel devant l’image, et il s’écria: « Demain il y aura fête en l’honneur de Yahweh. »
And Aaron sees, and builds an altar before it, and Aaron calls, and says, “A festival to YHWH—tomorrow”;
6 Le lendemain, s’étant levés de bon matin, ils offrirent des holocaustes et présentèrent des sacrifices pacifiques; et le peuple s’assit pour manger et pour boire, puis ils se levèrent pour se divertir.
and they rise early on the next day, and cause burnt-offerings to ascend, and bring peace-offerings near; and the people sit down to eat and to drink, and rise up to play.
7 Yahweh dit à Moïse: « Va, descends; car ton peuple que tu as fait monter du pays d’Égypte, s’est conduit très mal.
And YHWH says to Moses, “Go, descend, for your people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt have done corruptly,
8 Ils se sont bien vite détournés de la voie que je leur avais prescrite; ils se sont fait un veau en fonte, ils se sont prosternés devant lui, et ils lui ont offert des sacrifices, et ils ont dit: Israël, voici ton Dieu, qui t’a fait monter du pays d’Égypte. »
they have quickly turned aside from the way that I have commanded them; they have made a molten calf for themselves, and bow themselves to it, and sacrifice to it, and say, These [are] your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”
9 Yahweh dit à Moïse: « Je vois que ce peuple est un peuple au cou raide.
And YHWH says to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, it [is] a stiff-necked people;
10 Maintenant laisse-moi: que ma colère s’embrase contre eux et que je les consume! Mais je ferai de toi une grande nation. »
and now, leave Me alone, and My anger burns against them, and I consume them, and I make you become a great nation.”
11 Moïse implora Yahweh, son Dieu, et dit: « Pourquoi, Yahweh, votre colère s’embraserait-elle contre votre peuple, que vous avez fait sortir du pays d’Égypte par une grande puissance et par une main forte?
And Moses appeases the face of his God YHWH and says, “Why, O YHWH, does Your anger burn against Your people, whom You have brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a strong hand?
12 Pourquoi les Égyptiens diraient-ils: C’est pour leur malheur qu’il les a fait sortir, c’est pour les faire périr dans les montagnes et pour les anéantir de dessus la terre? Revenez de l’ardeur de votre colère, et repentez-vous du mal que vous voulez faire à votre peuple.
Why do the Egyptians speak, saying, He brought them out in calamity to slay them among mountains, and to consume them from off the face of the ground? Turn back from the heat of Your anger, and relent from this calamity against Your people.
13 Souvenez-vous d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, vos serviteurs, auxquels vous avez dit, en jurant par vous-même: Je multiplierai votre postérité comme les étoiles du ciel, et tout ce pays dont j’ai parlé, je le donnerai à vos descendants, et ils le posséderont à jamais. »
Be mindful of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, Your servants, to whom You have sworn by Yourself, and to whom You speak: I multiply your seed as stars of the heavens, and all this land, as I have said, I give to your seed, and they have inherited [it] for all time”;
14 Et Yahweh se repentit du mal qu’il avait parlé de faire à son peuple.
and YHWH relents from the evil which He has spoken of doing to His people.
15 Moïse revint et descendit de la montagne, ayant dans sa main les deux tables du témoignage, tables écrites sur leurs deux côtés; elles étaient écrites sur l’une et l’autre face.
And Moses turns, and goes down from the mountain, and the two tablets of the Testimony [are] in his hand, tablets written on both their sides; they [are] written on this [side] and on that [side];
16 Les tables étaient l’ouvrage de Dieu, et l’écriture était l’écriture de Dieu, gravée sur les tables.
and the tablets are the work of God, and the writing is the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.
17 Josué entendit le bruit que faisait le peuple en poussant des cris, et il dit à Moïse: « Il y a un cri de bataille dans le camp! »
And Joshua hears the voice of the people in their shouting and says to Moses, “A noise of battle in the camp!”
18 Moïse répondit: « Ce n’est ni un bruit de cris de victoire, ni un bruit de cris de défaite; j’entends la voix de gens qui chantent. »
And he says, “It is not the voice of the crying of might, nor is it the voice of the crying of weakness—I am hearing a voice of singing.”
19 Lorsqu’il fut près du camp, il vit le veau et les danses. Et la colère de Moïse s’enflamma; il jeta de ses mains les tables et les brisa au pied de la Montagne.
And it comes to pass, when he has drawn near to the camp, that he sees the calf, and the dancing, and the anger of Moses burns, and he casts the tablets out of his hands, and breaks them below the mountain;
20 Et, prenant le veau qu’ils avaient fait, il le brûla au feu, le broya jusqu’à le réduire en poudre, répandit cette poudre sur l’eau, et en fit boire aux enfants d’Israël.
and he takes the calf which they have made, and burns [it] with fire, and grinds [it] until [it is] small, and scatters [it] on the face of the waters, and causes the sons of Israel to drink.
21 Moïse dit à Aaron: « Que t’a fait ce peuple pour que tu aies amené sur lui un si grand péché? »
And Moses says to Aaron, “What has this people done to you, that you have brought in a great sin on it?”
22 Aaron répondit: « Que la colère de mon seigneur ne s’enflamme pas! Tu sais toi-même que ce peuple est porté au mal.
And Aaron says, “Do not let the anger of my lord burn; you have known the people, that it [is beset] with evil;
23 Ils m’ont dit: Fais-nous un dieu qui marche devant nous; car pour ce Moïse, cet homme qui nous a fait monter du pays d’Égypte, nous ne savons ce qu’il en est devenu.
and they say to me, Make gods for us, who go before us, for this Moses—the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt—we have not known what has happened to him;
24 Je leur ai dit: Que ceux qui ont de l’or s’en dépouillent! Ils m’en ont donné, je l’ai jeté au feu, et il en est sorti ce veau. »
and I say to them, Whoever has gold, let them break [it] off, and they give [it] to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf comes out.”
25 Moïse vit que le peuple n’avait plus de frein, parce qu’Aaron lui avait ôté tout frein, l’exposant à devenir une risée parmi ses ennemis.
And Moses sees the people, that it [is] unbridled, for Aaron has made it unbridled for contempt among its withstanders,
26 Et Moïse se plaça à la porte du camp, et il dit: « À moi ceux qui sont pour Yahweh! » Et tous les enfants de Lévi se rassemblèrent auprès de lui.
and Moses stands in the gate of the camp and says, “Who [is] for YHWH? [Come] to me!” And all the sons of Levi are gathered to him;
27 Il leur dit: « Ainsi parle Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël: Que chacun de vous mette son épée à son côté; passez et repassez dans le camp d’une porte à l’autre, et que chacun tue son frère, chacun son ami, chacun son parent! »
and he says to them, “Thus said YHWH, God of Israel: Each put his sword by his thigh, pass over and turn back from gate to gate through the camp, and each slay his brother, and each his friend, and each his relation.”
28 Les enfants de Lévi firent ce qu’ordonnait Moïse, et il périt ce jour-là environ trois mille hommes du peuple.
And the sons of Levi do according to the word of Moses, and there falls of the people on that day about three thousand men,
29 Moïse dit: « Consacrez-vous aujourd’hui à Yahweh, puisque chacun de vous a été contre son fils et son père, afin qu’il vous donne aujourd’hui une bénédiction. »
and Moses says, “Consecrate your hand to YHWH today, for a man [is] against his son, and against his brother, so as to bring a blessing on you today.”
30 Le lendemain, Moïse dit au peuple: « Vous avez commis un grand péché. Et maintenant je vais monter vers Yahweh: peut-être obtiendrai-je le pardon de votre péché. »
And it comes to pass, on the next day, that Moses says to the people, “You have sinned a great sin, and now I go up to YHWH, perhaps I can atone for your sin.”
31 Moïse retourna vers Yahweh et dit: « Ah! ce peuple a commis un grand péché! Ils se sont fait un dieu d’or.
And Moses turns back to YHWH and says, “Ah, now this people has sinned a great sin, that they make a god of gold for themselves;
32 Pardonnez maintenant leur péché; sinon effacez-moi de votre livre que vous avez écrit. »
and now, if You take away their sin—and if not—please blot me out of Your scroll which You have written.”
33 Yahweh dit à Moïse: « C’est celui qui a péché contre moi que j’effacerai de mon livre.
And YHWH says to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me—I blot him out of My scroll;
34 Va maintenant, conduis le peuple où je t’ai dit. Voici, mon ange marchera devant toi, mais, au jour de ma visite, je les punirai de leur péché. »
and now, go, lead the people wherever I have spoken to you of; behold, My Messenger goes before you, and in the day of my charging—then I have charged their sin on them.”
35 C’est ainsi que Yahweh frappa le peuple, parce qu’ils avaient fait le veau qu’Aaron avait fait.
And YHWH plagues the people because they made the calf which Aaron made.
