Esther 3
1 Après ces choses, le roi Assuérus éleva en dignité Aman, fils d’Amadatha, du pays d’Agag; il l’éleva et plaça son siège au-dessus de tous les chefs qui étaient auprès de lui.
After these events King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him to a place above all the officials who were with him.
2 Tous les serviteurs du roi, qui se tenaient à sa porte, fléchissaient le genou et se prosternaient devant Aman, car ainsi l’avait ordonné le roi à son sujet. Mais Mardochée ne fléchissait point le genou et ne se prosternait point.
All the king’s courtiers who were in the king’s gate used to bow down before Haman, for so the king had commanded, but Mordecai did not bow down nor prostrate himself.
3 Les serviteurs du roi, qui se tenaient à sa porte, dirent à Mardochée: « Pourquoi transgresses-tu l’ordre du roi? »
Then the king’s courtiers, who were in the king’s gate, said to Mordecai, ‘Why do you disobey the king’s command?’
4 Comme ils le lui répétaient chaque jour et qu’il ne les écoutait pas, ils en informèrent Aman, pour voir si Mardochée persévérerait dans sa résolution, car il leur avait dit qu’il était Juif.
When they had spoken to him day after day without his listening to them, they informed Haman, to see whether Mordecai’s acts would be tolerated, for he had told them that he was a Jew.
5 Aman vit que Mardochée ne fléchissait pas le genou et ne se prosternait pas devant lui; et Aman fut rempli de fureur.
When Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow down nor prostrate himself before him, he was furious.
6 Mais il dédaigna de porter la main sur Mardochée seul, car on lui avait appris de quel peuple était Mardochée; et Aman voulut détruire le peuple de Mardochée, tous les Juifs qui se trouvaient dans tout le royaume d’Assuérus.
But it seemed to him beneath his dignity to lay hands on Mordecai alone, for they had told him who Mordecai’s people were. Instead Haman sought to destroy all the people of Mordecai, all the Jews throughout the kingdom of Ahasuerus.
7 Le premier mois, qui est le mois de Nisan, la douzième année du roi Assuérus, on jeta le PUR, c’est-à-dire le sort, devant Aman, pour chaque jour et pour chaque mois, jusqu’au douzième mois, qui est le mois d’Adar.
In the first month (the month of Nisan) in the twelfth year of the reign of King Ahasuerus, Haman had “pur” (which means “lot”) cast before him to determine the best day and best month for his actions. The lot fell on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month – the month of Adar.
8 Alors Aman dit au roi Assuérus: « Il y a dans toutes les provinces de ton royaume un peuple dispersé et vivant à part parmi les autres peuples, ayant des lois différentes de celles de tous les autres peuples, et n’observant pas les lois du roi. Il n’est pas de l’intérêt du roi de le laisser en repos.
So Haman said to King Ahasuerus, ‘There is a certain people scattered among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom, whose laws differ from those of every other and who do not keep the king’s laws. Therefore it is not right for the king to tolerate them.
9 Si le roi le trouve bon, qu’on écrive l’ordre de les faire périr, et je pèserai dix mille talents d’argent entre les mains des fonctionnaires, pour qu’on les porte au trésor du roi. »
If it seems best to the king, let an order be given to destroy them, and I will pay ten thousand silver coins into the royal treasury.’
10 Le roi ôta son anneau de son doigt et le remit à Aman, fils d’Amadatha, du pays d’Agag, ennemi des Juifs;
So the king took off his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.
11 et le roi dit à Aman: « L’argent t’est donné et ce peuple aussi, pour que tu en fasses ce qui te paraîtra bon. »
‘The money is yours,’ the king said to Haman, ‘and the people also to do with them as you wish.’
12 Les secrétaires du roi furent appelés le treizième jour du premier mois, et l’on écrivit, conformément à tous les ordres d’Aman, aux satrapes du roi, aux gouverneurs de chaque province et aux chefs de chaque peuple, à chaque province selon son écriture, et à chaque peuple selon sa langue. Ce fut au nom du roi Assuérus que l’on écrivit, et on scella l’édit avec l’anneau royal.
And so, on the thirteenth day of the first month, the king’s secretaries were summoned and as Haman instructed an edict was issued to the king’s satraps and provincial governors and the rulers of each of the peoples in their own script and their own language. The edict was written in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with his ring.
13 Des lettres furent envoyées par les courriers dans toutes les provinces du roi, pour qu’on détruisit, qu’on égorgeât et qu’on fît périr tous les Juifs, jeunes et vieux, petits enfants et femmes, en un seul jour, le treizième du douzième mois, qui est le mois d’Adar, et qu’on pillât leurs biens.
Dispatches were sent by couriers to all the king’s provinces, saying: Destroy, kill, put an end to all the Jews, young and old, little children and women, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, and plunder their possessions.
14 Une copie de l’édit, qui devait être publié comme loi dans chaque province, fut adressée ouverte à tous les peuples, afin qu’ils fussent prêts pour ce jour-là.
A copy of the edict was to be published as a decree in every province – publicly displayed so that everyone might be ready for that day.
15 Les courriers partirent en toute hâte, d’après l’ordre du roi. L’édit fut aussi publié dans Suse la capitale; et, tandis que le roi et Aman étaient assis à boire, l’agitation régnait dans la ville de Suse.
By command of the king the couriers raced off, and the edict was published in Susa itself. Then the king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was in turmoil.
