Ecclésiaste 10
1 Des mouches mortes infectent et corrompent l’huile du parfumeur; de même un peu de folie l’emporte sur la sagesse et la gloire.
Dying flies spoil the sweetness of the ointment. Wisdom and glory is more precious than a small and shortlived folly.
2 Le cœur du sage est à sa droite, et le cœur de l’insensé, à sa gauche.
The heart of a wise man is in his right hand, and the heart of a fool is in his left hand.
3 Et aussi, quand l’insensé va dans le chemin, le sens lui manque, et il montre à tous qu’il est fou.
Yea, and the fool when he walketh in the way, whereas be himself is a fool, esteemeth all men fools.
4 Si l’esprit du prince s’élève contre toi, ne quitte point ta place; car le calme prévient de grandes fautes.
If the spirit of him that hath power, ascend upon thee, leave not thy place: because care will make the greatest sins to cease.
5 Il est un mal que j’ai vu sous le soleil, comme une erreur qui provient du souverain:
There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, as it were by an error proceeding from the face of the prince:
6 la folie occupe les postes élevés, et des riches sont assis dans de basses conditions.
A fool set in high dignity, and the rich sitting beneath.
7 J’ai vu des esclaves portés sur des chevaux, et des princes aller à pied comme des esclaves.
I have seen servants upon horses: and princes walking on the ground as servants.
8 Celui qui creuse une fosse peut y tomber, et celui qui renverse une muraille peut être mordu par un serpent.
He that diggeth a pit, shall fall into it: and he that breaketh a hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
9 Celui qui détache des pierres peut être blessé, et celui qui fend du bois peut se faire mal.
He that removeth stones, shall be hurt by them: and he that cutteth trees, shall be wounded by them.
10 Si le fer est émoussé et si l’on n’a pas aiguisé le tranchant, on devra redoubler de force; mais la sagesse est préférable pour le succès.
If the iron be blunt, and be not as before, but be made blunt, with much labour it shall be sharpened: and after industry shall follow wisdom.
11 Si le serpent mord faute d’enchantement, il n’y a pas d’avantage pour l’enchanteur.
If a serpent bite in silence, he is nothing better that backbiteth secretly.
12 Les paroles de la bouche du sage sont pleines de grâce; mais les lèvres de l’insensé le dévorent.
The words of the mouth of a wise man are grace: but the lips of a fool shall throw him down headlong.
13 Le commencement des paroles de sa bouche est sottise, et la fin de son discours est démence furieuse.
The beginning of his words is folly, and the end of his talk is a mischievous error.
14 Et l’insensé multiplie les paroles!… L’homme ne sait pas ce qui arrivera, et qui lui dira ce qui sera après lui?
A fool multiplieth words. A man cannot tell what hath been before him: and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
15 Le travail de l’insensé le fatigue, lui qui ne sait pas même aller à la ville.
The labour of fools shall afflict them that know not bow to go to the city.
16 Malheur à toi, pays dont le roi est un enfant, et dont les princes mangent dès le matin!
Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and when the princes eat in the morning.
17 Heureux es-tu, pays dont le roi est fils de nobles, et dont les princes mangent au temps convenable, pour soutenir leurs forces, et non pour se livrer à la boisson.
Blessed is the land, whose king is noble, and whose princes eat in due season for refreshment, and not for riotousness.
18 Quand les mains sont paresseuses, la charpente s’affaisse, et quand les mains sont lâches, la maison ruisselle.
By slothfulness a building shall be brought down, and through the weakness of hands, the house shall drop through.
19 On fait des repas pour goûter le plaisir; le vin rend la vie joyeuse, et l’argent répond à tout.
For laughter they make bread, and wine that the living may feast: and all things obey money.
20 Même dans ta pensée ne maudis pas le roi, même dans ta chambre à coucher ne maudis pas le puissant; car l’oiseau du ciel emporterait ta voix, et l’animal ailé publierait tes paroles.
Detract not the king, no not in thy thought; and speak not evil of the rich man in thy private chamber: because even the birds of the air will carry thy voice, and he that hath wings will tell what thou hast said.
