Actes 22
1 « Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez ce que j’ai maintenant à vous dire pour ma défense. » —
Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye the account which I now give unto you.
2 Dès qu’ils entendirent qu’il leur parlait en langue hébraïque, ils firent encore plus de silence.
(And when they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew tongue, they kept the more silence.)
3 Et Paul dit: « Je suis Juif, né à Tarse en Cilicie; mais j’ai été élevé dans cette ville et instruit aux pieds de Gamaliel dans la connaissance exacte de la Loi de nos pères, étant plein de zèle pour Dieu, comme vous l’êtes tous aujourd’hui.
And he saith: I am a Jew, born at Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the truth of the law of the fathers, zealous for the law, as also all you are this day:
4 C’est moi qui ai persécuté cette secte jusqu’à la mort, chargeant de chaînes et jetant en prison hommes et femmes:
Who persecuted this way unto death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
5 le grand-prêtre et tous les Anciens m’en sont témoins. Ayant même reçu d’eux des lettres pour les frères, je partis pour Damas afin d’amener enchaînés à Jérusalem ceux qui se trouvaient là, et de les faire punir.
As the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the ancients: from whom also receiving letters to the brethren, I went to Damascus, that I might bring them bound from thence to Jerusalem to be punished.
6 Mais comme j’étais en chemin, et déjà près de Damas, tout à coup, vers midi, une vive lumière venant du ciel resplendit autour de moi.
And it came to pass, as I was going, and drawing nigh to Damascus at midday, that suddenly from heaven there shone round about me a great light:
7 Je tombai par terre, et j’entendis une voix qui me disait: Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu?
And falling on the ground, I heard a voice saying to me: Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
8 Je répondis: Qui êtes-vous, Seigneur? Et il me dit: Je suis Jésus de Nazareth, que tu persécutes.
And I answered: Who art thou, Lord? And he said to me: I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
9 Ceux qui étaient avec moi virent bien la lumière, mais ils n’entendirent pas la voix de celui qui me parlait.
And they that were with me, saw indeed the light, but they heard not the voice of him that spoke with me.
10 Alors je dis: Que dois-je faire, Seigneur? Et le Seigneur me répondit: Lève-toi, va à Damas, et là on te dira tout ce que tu dois faire.
And I said: What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me: Arise, and go to Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things that thou must do.
11 Et comme par suite de l’éclat de cette lumière je ne voyais plus, ceux qui étaient avec moi me prirent par la main, et j’arrivai à Damas.
And whereas I did not see for the brightness of that light, being led by the hand by my companions, I came to Damascus.
12 Or un homme pieux selon la Loi, nommé Ananie, et de qui tous les Juifs de la ville rendaient un bon témoignage,
And one Ananias, a man according to the law, having testimony of all the Jews who dwelt there,
13 vint me voir, et s’étant approché de moi, me dit: Saul, mon frère, recouvre la vue. Et au même instant je le vis.
Coming to me, and standing by me, said to me: Brother Saul, look up. And I the same hour looked upon him.
14 Il dit alors: Le Dieu de nos pères t’a prédestiné à connaître sa volonté, à voir le Juste et entendre les paroles de sa bouche.
But he said: The God of our fathers hath preordained thee that thou shouldst know his will, and see the Just One, and shouldst hear the voice from his mouth.
15 Car tu lui serviras de témoin, devant tous les hommes, des choses que tu as vues et entendues.
For thou shalt be his witness to all men, of those things which thou hast seen and heard.
16 Et maintenant que tardes-tu? Lève-toi, reçois le baptême et purifie-toi de tes péchés, en invoquant son nom. —
And now why tarriest thou? Rise up, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, invoking his name.
17 De retour à Jérusalem, comme je priais dans le temple, il m’arriva d’être ravi en esprit,
And it came to pass, when I was come again to Jerusalem, and was praying in the temple, that I was in a trance,
18 et je vis le Seigneur qui me disait: Hâte-toi et sors au plus tôt de Jérusalem, parce qu’on n’y recevra pas le témoignage que tu rendras de moi. —
And saw him saying unto me: Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem; because they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
19 Seigneur, répondis-je, ils savent eux-mêmes que je faisais mettre en prison et battre de verges dans les synagogues ceux qui croyaient en vous,
And I said: Lord, they know that I cast into prison, and beat in every synagogue, them that believed in thee.
20 et lorsqu’on répandit le sang d’Étienne, votre témoin, j’étais moi-même présent, joignant mon approbation à celle des autres et gardant les vêtements de ceux qui le lapidaient.
And when the blood of Stephen thy witness was shed, I stood by and consented, and kept the garments of them that killed him.
21 Alors il me dit: Va, c’est aux nations lointaines que je veux t’envoyer. »
And he said to me: Go, for unto the Gentiles afar off, will I send thee.
22 Les Juifs l’avaient écouté jusqu’à ces mots; ils élevèrent alors la voix, en disant: « Ote de la terre un pareil homme; il n’est pas digne de vivre. »
And they heard him until this word, and then lifted up their voice, saying: Away with such an one from the earth; for it is not fit that he should live.
23 Et comme ils poussaient de grands cris, jetant leurs manteaux et lançant de la poussière en l’air,
And as they cried out and threw off their garments, and cast dust into the air,
24 le tribun ordonna de faire entrer Paul dans la forteresse et de lui donner la question par le fouet, afin de savoir pour quel motif ils criaient ainsi contre lui.
The tribune commanded him to be brought into the castle, and that he should be scourged and tortured: to know for what cause they did so cry out against him.
25 Déjà les soldats l’avaient lié avec les courroies, lorsque Paul dit au centurion qui était là: « Vous est-il permis de flageller un citoyen romain, qui n’est pas même condamné? »
And when they had bound him with thongs, Paul saith to the centurion that stood by him: Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
26 À ces mots, le centurion alla trouver le tribun pour l’avertir, et lui dit: « Que vas-tu faire? Cet homme est citoyen romain. »
Which the centurion hearing, went to the tribune, and told him, saying: What art thou about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.
27 Le tribun vint et dit à Paul: « Dis-moi, es-tu citoyen romain? » « Oui, » répondit-il;
And the tribune coming, said to him: Tell me, art thou a Roman? But he said: Yea.
28 et le tribun repris: « Moi, j’ai acheté bien cher ce droit de cité. » — « Et moi, dit Paul, je l’ai par ma naissance. »
And the tribune answered: I obtained the being free of this city with a great sum. And Paul said: But I was born so.
29 Aussitôt ceux qui se disposaient à lui donner la question se retirèrent; et le tribun aussi eut peur, quand il sut que Paul était citoyen romain et qu’il l’avait fait lier.
Immediately therefore they departed from him that were about to torture him. The tribune also was afraid after he understood that he was a Roman citizen, and because he had bound him.
30 Le lendemain, voulant savoir exactement de quoi les Juifs l’accusaient, il lui fit ôter ses liens, et donna l’ordre aux princes des prêtres et à tout le Sanhédrin de se réunir; puis, ayant fait descendre Paul, il le plaça au milieu d’eux.
But on the next day, meaning to know more diligently for what cause he was accused by the Jews, he loosed him, and commanded the priests to come together, and all the council: and bringing forth Paul, he set him before them.
