Actes 17
1 Ayant ensuite traversé Amphipolis et Apollonie, Paul et Silas arrivèrent à Thessalonique, où était la synagogue des Juifs.
Now when they had gone through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica. Here there was a Jewish synagogue,
2 Selon sa coutume, Paul y entra, et pendant trois sabbats, il discuta avec eux. Partant des Écritures,
and Paul, according to his usual custom, went in to them and, for three Sabbath Days, he reasoned with them out of the Scriptures,
3 il expliquait et établissait que le Messie avait dû souffrir et ressusciter des morts; et « ce Messie, disait-il, c’est le Christ Jésus que je vous annonce. »
explaining and quoting passages to prove that the Messiah had to suffer and to rise again from the dead and that "This Jesus whom I am proclaiming unto you is the Messiah."
4 Quelques Juifs furent persuadés, et ils se joignirent à Paul et à Silas, ainsi qu’une grande multitude de gentils craignant Dieu, et un assez grand nombre de femmes du premier rang.
Some were persuaded and attached themselves to Paul and Silas, including a number of devout Greeks, and a large number of the leading women.
5 Mais les Juifs, piqués de jalousie, enrôlèrent quelques mauvais sujets de la lie du peuple, provoquèrent des attroupements, et répandirent l’agitation dans la ville. Puis, s’étant précipités vers la maison de Jason, ils cherchèrent Paul et Silas pour les amener devant le peuple.
But the Jews, moved with jealousy, called to their aid certain ill- favored and idle fellows, formed a mob, and began to set the town in an uproar. Assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them out to the people.
6 Ne les ayant pas trouvés, ils traînèrent Jason et quelques frères devant les politarques, en criant: « Ces hommes qui ont bouleversé le monde sont aussi venus ici,
And when they had failed to find Paul and Silas, they began to drag Jason and some of the brethren before the politarchs, shouting. "These fellows who have upset the habitable earth are come hither also.
7 et Jason les a reçus. Ils sont tous en contravention avec les édits de César, disant qu’il y a un autre roi, Jésus. »
"Jason has received them, and they all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus."
8 Ils mirent ainsi en émoi le peuple et les politarques qui les écoutaient.
Both the crowd and the politarchs were disturbed when they heard this,
9 Et ce ne fut qu’après avoir reçu une caution de Jason et des autres qu’ils les laissèrent aller.
but when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
10 Les frères, sans perdre de temps, firent partir de nuit Paul et Silas pour Bérée. Quand ils furent arrivés dans cette ville, ils se rendirent à la synagogue des Juifs.
Now the brothers sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they got there they betook themselves to the Jewish synagogue.
11 Ces derniers avaient des sentiments plus nobles que ceux de Thessalonique; ils reçurent la parole avec beaucoup d’empressement, examinant chaque jour les Écritures, pour voir si ce qu’on leur enseignait était exact.
The Jews of Berea were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they very readily received the message with all readiness of mind, and day after day searched the Scriptures to see whether these things were so.
12 Beaucoup d’entre eux, et, parmi les Grecs, des femmes de qualité et des hommes en grand nombre, embrassèrent la foi.
So many of them became believers, and so did not a few Greeks, women of honorable estate, and men.
13 Mais quand les Juifs de Thessalonique surent que Paul annonçait aussi à Bérée la parole de Dieu, ils vinrent encore y agiter la population.
As soon as the Jews in Thessalonica learned that the word of God was preached by Paul in Berea also, they came there, and stirred up and troubled the crowds.
14 Alors les frères firent sur-le-champ partir Paul jusqu’à la mer; mais Silas et Timothée restèrent à Bérée.
Then the brothers at once sent Paul down to the sea, but Silas and Timothy remained behind.
15 Ceux qui conduisaient Paul l’accompagnèrent jusqu’à Athènes; puis, chargés de mander à Silas et à Timothée de venir le rejoindre au plus tôt, ils s’en retournèrent.
Those who were caring for Paul brought him as far as Athens, and there left him, with instructions to Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed.
16 Pendant que Paul les attendait à Athènes, il sentait en son âme une vive indignation au spectacle de cette ville pleine d’idoles.
While Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred within him, when he noticed that the city was full of idols.
17 Il discutait donc dans la synagogue avec les Juifs et les hommes craignant Dieu, et tous les jours dans l’Agora avec ceux qu’il rencontrait.
He argued in the synagogues with the Jews and the devout proselytes, and also daily in the market-place with those that met him there.
18 Or quelques philosophes épicuriens et stoïciens ayant conféré avec lui, les uns disaient: « Que nous veut ce semeur de paroles? » D’autres, l’entendant prêcher Jésus et la résurrection, disaient: « Il paraît qu’il vient nous annoncer des divinités étrangères. »
A few of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also encountered him again and again. Some were saying, "What has this beggarly fellow to say?" Others said, "He seems to be a setter forth of strange gods," because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.
19 Et l’ayant pris avec eux, ils le menèrent sur l’Aréopage, disant: « Pourrions-nous savoir quelle est cette nouvelle doctrine que tu enseignes?
Then they laid hold of him and brought him up to Mars Hill, saying. "May we be told what this new teaching of yours is?
20 Car tu nous fais entendre des choses étranges; nous voudrions donc savoir ce qu’il en est. »
"For you are bringing certain strange things to our ears. We want to know, therefore, what these things mean."
21 Or tous les Athéniens et les étrangers établis dans la ville ne passaient leur temps qu’à dire ou à écouter des nouvelles.
(Now all the Athenians and the strangers sojourning there spent their time in nothing else, but to tell or to hear some new thing.)
22 Paul, debout au milieu de l’Aréopage, parla ainsi: « Athéniens, je constate qu’à tous égards vous êtes éminemment religieux.
So Paul stood up in the center of Mars Hill, and said. "Men of Athens, I perceive that in all respects you are remarkably religious.
23 Car lorsqu’en passant je regardais les objets de votre culte, j’ai trouvé même un autel avec cette inscription: AU DIEU INCONNU. Celui que vous adorez sans le connaître, je viens vous l’annoncer.
"For as I was passing along and observing your objects of worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ What you are worshiping in ignorance, this I am proclaiming to you.
24 Le Dieu qui a fait le monde et tout ce qu’il renferme, étant le Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, n’habite point dans des temples faits de main d’homme;
"The God who made the universe and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands,
25 il n’est point servi par des mains humaines, comme s’il avait besoin de quelque chose, lui qui donne à tous la vie, le souffle et toutes choses.
"neither is he served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all life and breath and all things.
26 D’un seul homme il a fait sortir tout le genre humain, pour peupler la surface de toute la terre, ayant déterminé pour chaque nation la durée de son existence et les bornes de son domaine,
"He has made of one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed seasons and the bounds of their habitation,
27 afin que les hommes le cherchent et le trouvent comme à tâtons: quoiqu’il ne soit pas loin de chacun de nous,
"so that they might seek God, if perhaps they might feel after him and find him, though he is not far from every on of us;
28 car c’est en lui que nous avons la vie, le mouvement et l’être; et, comme l’ont dit aussi quelques-uns de vos poètes … de sa race nous sommes.
"for in him we live and move and have our being; as certain even of your own poets have said, "‘For we also are his offspring.’
29 Étant donc de la race de Dieu, nous ne devons pas croire que la divinité soit semblable à de l’or, à de l’argent, ou à de la pierre, sculptés par l’art et le génie de l’homme.
"Since then we are God’s offspring, we ought not to imagine that the Godhead is like to gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and device of man.
30 Dieu ne tenant pas compte de ces temps d’ignorance, annonce maintenant aux hommes qu’ils aient tous, en tous lieux, à se repentir;
"The times of ignorance God overlooked, but he now commands all men that they should all, everywhere, repent;
31 car il a fixé un jour où il jugera le monde selon la justice, par l’homme qu’il a désigné, et qu’il a accrédité auprès de tous, en le ressuscitant des morts. »
inasmuch as he has fixed a day in which he will judge the world justly, by the Man whom he has ordained, and he has given proof of all this by raising him from the dead."
32 Lorsqu’ils entendirent parler de résurrection des morts, les uns se moquèrent, les autres dirent: « Nous t’entendrons là-dessus une autre fois. »
But on hearing of the resurrection of the dead, some began to mock; but others said, "We will hear you again on that subject."
33 C’est ainsi que Paul se retira du milieu d’eux.
So Paul withdrew from them.
34 Quelques personnes néanmoins s’attachèrent à lui et crurent; de ce nombre furent Denys l’Aréopagite, une femme nommée Damaris, et d’autres avec eux.
A few, however, attached themselves to him and believed, among whom was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and some others.
