2 Samuel 1
1 Après la mort de Saül, David était revenu de battre les Amalécites, et David demeurait depuis deux jours à Siceleg.
After the death of Saul, David returned from attacking the Amalekites. He stayed in Ziklag for two days.
2 Le troisième jour, voici qu’un homme arriva du camp, d’auprès de Saül, les vêtements déchirés et de la terre sur la tête. Lorsqu’il arriva près de David, il se jeta par terre et se prosterna.
Then on the third day a man arrived from Saul's camp. His clothes were torn and he had dust on his head. When he approached David, he bowed before him, and fell to the ground in respect.
3 David lui dit: « D’où viens-tu? » Et il lui répondit: « Je me suis sauvé du camp d’Israël. »
“Where have you come from?” David asked him. “I got away from the Israelite camp,” he replied.
4 David lui dit: « Qu’est-il arrivé? Raconte-le-moi donc. » Il dit: « Le peuple s’est enfui de la bataille, et un grand nombre parmi le peuple sont tombés et ont péri; Saül même et son fils Jonathas sont morts. »
“Tell me what happened,” David asked. “The army ran away from the battle,” the man replied. “Many of them died, and Saul and his son Jonathan also died.”
5 David dit au jeune homme qui lui apportait ces nouvelles: « Comment sais-tu que Saül et son fils Jonathas sont morts? »
“How do you know Saul and Jonathan died?” David asked the man giving the report.
6 Et le jeune homme qui lui apportait la nouvelle répondit: « Je me trouvais par hasard sur la montagne de Gelboé; et voici que Saül s’appuyait sur sa lance, et voici que les chars et les cavaliers étaient près de l’atteindre.
“I just happened to be there on Mount Gilboa,” he replied. “I saw Saul, leaning on his spear, with the enemy chariots and the charioteers advancing on him.
7 Il se retourna et, m’ayant aperçu, il m’appela, et je dis: « Me voici. »
He turned around and saw me. He called out and I replied, ‘I'm here to help!’
8 Et il me dit: « Qui es-tu? » Je lui répondis: « Je suis un Amalécite. »
He asked me, ‘Who are you?’ I told him, ‘I'm an Amalekite.’
9 Et il me dit: « Approche-toi donc de moi et donne-moi la mort; car je suis pris de vertige, et ma vie est encore tout entière en moi.
Then he told me, ‘Please come over here and kill me! I'm in terrible agony but life is still hanging on.’
10 Je m’approchai de lui et je lui donnai la mort, car je savais bien qu’il ne survivrait pas à sa défaite. J’ai pris le diadème qui était sur sa tête et le bracelet qu’il avait au bras, et je les apporte ici à mon seigneur. »
So I went over him and killed him, because I knew that wounded as he was he couldn't last long. I took the crown from his head and his bracelet from his arm, and I've brought them here to you, my lord.”
11 David saisit ses vêtements et les déchira, et tous les hommes qui étaient auprès de lui firent de même.
David grabbed hold of his clothes and ripped them, as did his men.
12 Ils célébrèrent leur deuil, pleurant et jeûnant jusqu’au soir, sur Saül, sur son fils Jonathas, sur le peuple de Yahweh et sur la maison d’Israël, parce qu’ils étaient tombés par l’épée.
They mourned and cried and fasted until the evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of the Lord, the Israelites, that had been killed by the sword.
13 David dit au jeune homme qui lui avait apporté la nouvelle: « D’où es-tu? » Il répondit: « Je suis fils d’un étranger, d’un Amalécite. »
David asked man who brought him the report, “Where are you from?” “I'm the son of a foreigner,” he replied “I'm an Amalekite.”
14 David lui dit: « Comment n’as-tu pas craint d’étendre ta main pour donner la mort à l’oint de Yahweh? »
“Why weren't you worried about killing the Lord's anointed one?” David asked.
15 Et David, appelant un des jeunes gens, dit: « Approche et tue-le. » Cet homme frappa l’ Amalécite, et il mourut.
David called over one of his men and said, “Go ahead, kill him!” So the man cut the Amalekite down and killed him.
16 Et David lui dit: « Que ton sang soit sur ta tête! Car ta bouche a déposé contre toi quand tu as dit: C’est moi qui ai donné la mort à l’oint de Yahweh. »
David had told the Amalekite, “Your death is your own fault because you testified against yourself when you said, ‘I killed the Lord's anointed one.’”
17 David entonna ce chant funèbre sur Saül et sur Jonathas, son fils,
Then David sang this lament for Saul and his son Jonathan.
18 et il ordonna de l’enseigner aux enfants de Juda; c’est le chant de l’Arc. Voici qu’il est écrit dans le Livre du Juste:
He ordered it to be taught to the people of Judah. It is called “the Bow” and is recorded in the Book of the Just:
19 La splendeur d’Israël a-t-elle péri sur tes hauteurs? Comment sont tombés les héros?
“Israel, the glorious one lies dead on your mountains. How the mighty have fallen!
20 Ne l’annoncez pas à Geth, ne le publiez pas dans les rues d’Ascalon, de peur que les filles des Philistins ne s’en réjouissent, de peur que les filles des incirconcis ne sautent de joie!
Don't announce it in the town of Gath, don't proclaim it in the streets of Ashkelon, so that the Philistine women won't rejoice, so that the heathen women won't celebrate.
21 Montagnes de Gelboé, qu’il n’y ait sur vous ni rosée ni pluie, ni champs de prémices! Car là fut jeté bas le bouclier des héros. Le bouclier de Saül n’était pas oint d’huile,
Mountains of Gilboa, may no dew or rain fall on you! May you have no fields that produce offerings of grain. For it was there that the shield of the mighty was defiled; Saul's shield, no longer cared for with olive oil.
22 mais du sang des blessés, de la graisse des vaillants; l’arc de Jonathas ne recula jamais en arrière, et l’épée de Saül ne revenait pas inactive.
Jonathan with his bow did not retreat from attacking the enemy; Saul with his sword did not return empty-handed from shedding blood.
23 Saül et Jonathas, chéris et aimables dans la vie et dans la mort, ils ne furent point séparés. Ils étaient plus agiles que les aigles, ils étaient plus forts que les lions.
During their lives, Saul and Jonathan were much loved and very pleasant, and death did not divide them. They were faster than eagles, stronger than lions.
24 Filles d’Israël, pleurez sur Saül, qui vous revêtait de pourpre au sein des délices, qui mettait des ornements d’or sur vos vêtements!
Women of Israel, mourn for Saul, who gave you fine scarlet clothes decorated with gold ornaments.
25 Comment les héros sont-ils tombés dans la bataille? Jonathas a été percé sur tes hauteurs!
How the mighty have fallen in battle! Jonathan lies dead on your mountains.
26 L’angoisse m’accable à cause de toi, Jonathas, mon frère. Tu faisais toutes mes délices; ton amour m’était plus précieux que l’amour des femmes.
I weep so much for you, my brother Jonathan! You were so very dear to me! Your love for me was so wonderful, greater than the love women have!
27 Comment les héros sont-ils tombés? Comment les guerriers ont-ils péri?
How the mighty have fallen! The weapons of war are gone!”
