2 Samuel 2
1 Après cela, David consulta Yahweh, en disant: « Monterai-je dans une des villes de Juda? » Yahweh lui répondit: « Monte. » David dit: « Où monterai-je? » Et Yahweh répondit: « À Hébron. »
And after these things David consulted the Lord, saying: Shall I go up into one of the cities of Juda? And the Lord said to him: Go up. And David said: Whither shall I go up? And he answered him: Into Hebron.
2 David y monta, avec ses deux femmes, Achinoam de Jezraël et Abigaïl de Carmel, femme de Nabal.
So David went up, and his two wives, Achinoam the Jezrahelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal of Carmel:
3 David fit aussi monter les hommes qui étaient avec lui, chacun avec sa famille; ils habitèrent dans les villes d’Hébron.
And the men also that were with him, David brought up every man with his household: and they abode in the towns of Hebron.
4 Et les hommes de Juda vinrent, et là ils oignirent David pour roi sur la maison de Juda. On informa David que c’étaient les hommes de Jabès en Galaad qui avaient enterré Saül.
And the men of Juda came, and anointed David there, to be king over the house of Juda. And it was told David, that the men of Jabes Galaad had buried Saul.
5 Et David envoya des messagers aux gens de Jabès en Galaad pour leur dire: « Soyez bénis de Yahweh, de ce que vous avez rempli ce pieux devoir envers Saül, votre seigneur, et l’avez enterré.
David therefore sent messengers to the men of Jabes Galaad, and said to them: Blessed be you to the Lord, who have shewn this mercy to your master Saul, and have buried him.
6 Et maintenant, que Yahweh use envers vous de bonté et de fidélité! Moi aussi, je vous rendrai ce bien, parce que vous avez agi de la sorte.
And now the Lord surely will render you mercy and truth, and I also will, requite you for this good turn, because you have done this thing.
7 Et, maintenant, que vos mains se fortifient, et soyez de vaillants hommes; car votre seigneur Saül est mort, et c’est moi que la maison de Juda a oint pour être son roi. »
Let your hands be strengthened, and be ye men of valour: for although your master Saul be dead, yet the house of Juda hath anointed me to be their king.
8 Cependant Abner, fils de Ner, chef de l’armée de Saül, prit Isboseth, fils de Saül, et, l’ayant fait passer à Mahanaïm,
But Abner the son of Ner, general of Saul’s army, took Isboseth the son of Saul, and led him about through the camp?
9 il l’établit roi sur Galaad, sur les Assurites, sur Jezraël, sur Ephraïm, sur Benjamin, sur tout Israël.
And made him king over Galaad, and, over Gessuri, and over Jezrahel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
10 — Isboseth, fils de Saül, était âgé de quarante ans lorsqu’il régna sur Israël, et il régna deux ans. — Seule, la maison de Juda restait attachée à David.
Isboseth the son of Saul was forty years old when he began to reign over, Israel, and he reigned two years: and only the house of Juda followed David.
11 Le temps pendant lequel David régna, à Hébron, sur la maison de Juda fut de sept ans et six mois.
And the number of the days that David abode, reigning in Hebron over the house of Juda, was seven years and six months.
12 Abner, fils de Ner, et les serviteurs d’Isboseth, fils de Saül, sortirent de Mahanaïm pour marcher sur Gabaon.
And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Isboseth the son of Saul, went out from the camp to Gabaon.
13 Joab, fils de Sarvia, et les serviteurs de David, se mirent aussi en marche. Ils se rencontrèrent près de l’étang de Gabaon, et ils s’établirent, les uns d’un côté de l’étang, les autres de l’autre côté de l’étang.
And Joab the son of Sarvia, and the servants of David went out, and met them by the pool of Gabaon. And when they were come together, they sat down over against one another: the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side.
14 Abner dit à Joab: « Que les jeunes gens se lèvent et qu’ils joutent devant nous! » Joab répondit: « Qu’ils se lèvent! »
And Abner said to Joab: Let the young men rise, and play before us. And Joab answered: Let them rise.
15 Ils se levèrent et s’avancèrent en nombre égal, douze pour Benjamin et pour Isboseth, fils de Saül, et douze des serviteurs de David.
Then there arose and went over twelve in number of Benjamin, of the part of Isboseth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
16 Chacun, saisissant son adversaire par la tête, enfonça son épée dans le flanc de son compagnon, et ils tombèrent tous ensemble. Et l’on donna à ce lieu le nom de Chelqath Hatsourim; il est en Gabaon.
And every one catching his fellow, by the head, thrust his sword into the side of his adversary, and they fell down together: and the name of the place was called: The field of the valiant, in Gabaon.
17 Et le combat devint très rude en ce jour-là, et Abner et les hommes d’Israël furent défaits par les serviteurs de David.
And there was a very fierce battle that day: and Abner was put to flight, with the men of Israel, by the servants of David.
18 Là se trouvaient les trois fils de Sarvia: Joab, Abisaï et Asaël. Asaël avait les pieds légers comme une des gazelles qui sont dans les champs;
And there were the three sons of Sarvia there, Joab, and Abisai, and Asael: now Asael was a most swift runner, like one of the roes that abide in the woods.
19 Asaël poursuivit Abner, sans se détourner de derrière Abner, pour aller à droite ou à gauche.
And Asael pursued after Abner, and turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.
20 Abner, se tourna derrière lui et dit: « Est-ce toi, Asaël? » Et il répondit: « C’est moi. »
And Abner looked behind him, and said: Art thou Asael? And he answered: I am.
21 Abner lui dit: « Écarte-toi à droite ou à gauche; saisis l’un des jeunes gens et prends sa dépouille. » Mais Asaël ne voulut pas se détourner de lui.
And Abner said to him: Go to the right hand or to the left, and lay hold on one of the young men and take thee his spoils. But Asael would not leave off following him close.
22 Abner dit encore à Asaël: « Détourne-toi de derrière moi; pourquoi te frapperais-je et t’étendrais-je par terre? Comment pourrais-je ensuite lever mon visage devant Joab, ton frère! »
And again Abner said to Asael: Go off, and do not follow me, lest I be obliged to stab thee to the ground, and I shall not be able to hold up my face to Joab thy brother.
23 Et Asaël refusa de se détourner. Alors Abner le frappa au ventre avec l’extrémité inférieure de sa lance, et la lance sortit par derrière. Il tomba là, et mourut sur place. Tous ceux qui arrivaient au lieu où Asaël était tombé et était mort, s’y arrêtaient.
But he refused to hearken to him, and would not turn aside: wherefore Abner struck him with his spear with a back stroke in the groin, and thrust him through, and he died upon the spot: and all that came to the place where Asael fell down and died stood still.
24 Joab et Abisaï poursuivirent Abner; au coucher du soleil, ils arrivèrent à la colline d’Ammah, qui est à l’est de Giach, sur le chemin du désert de Gabaon.
Now while Joab and Abisai pursued after Abner, the sun went down: and they came as far as the hill of the aqueduct, that lieth over against the valley by the way of the wilderness in Gabaon.
25 Les fils de Benjamin se rallièrent à la suite d’Abner et, réunis en un seul corps d’armée, ils s’arrêtèrent au sommet d’une colline.
And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together to Abner: and being joined in one body, they stood on the top of a hill.
26 Abner appela Joab et dit: « L’épée dévorera-t-elle toujours? Ne sais-tu pas qu’il y aura de l’amertume à la fin? Jusques à quand attendras-tu à dire au peuple de cesser de poursuivre ses frères? »
And Abner cried out to Joab, and said: Shall thy sword rage unto utter destruction? knowest thou not that it is dangerous to drive people to despair? how long dost thou defer to bid the people cease from pursuing after their brethren?
27 Joab répondit: « Aussi vrai que Dieu est vivant! si tu n’avais pas parlé, le peuple n’aurait pas cessé avant demain matin de poursuivre chacun son frère. »
And Joab said: As the Lord liveth, if thou hadst spoke sooner, even in the morning the people should have retired from pursuing after their brethren.
28 Et Joab sonna de la trompette, et tout le peuple s’arrêta; ils ne poursuivirent plus Israël, et ils ne continuèrent pas à se battre.
Then Joab sounded the trumpet, and all the army stood still, and did not pursue after Israel any farther, nor fight any more.
29 Abner et ses gens, après avoir marché toute la nuit dans la Plaine, passèrent le Jourdain, traversèrent tout le Bithron, et arrivèrent à Mahanaïm.
And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plains: and they passed the Jordan, and having gone through all Beth-horon, came to the camp.
30 Joab aussi cessa de poursuivre Abner et rassembla tout le peuple; il manquait dix-neuf hommes des serviteurs de David, et Asaël.
And Joab returning, after he had left Abner, assembled all the people: and there were wanting of David’s servants nineteen men, beside Asael.
31 Et les serviteurs de David avaient frappé à mort trois cent soixante hommes de Benjamin et des hommes d’Abner.
But the servants of David had killed of Benjamin, and of the men that were with Abner, three hundred and sixty, who all died.
And they took Asael, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father in Bethlehem, and Joab, and the men that were with him, marched all the night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.
