1 Lorsque Yahweh fit monter Élie au ciel dans un tourbillon, Élie s’en allait de Galgala avec Élisée.
So it came about, when Yahweh was going to take up Elijah by a whirlwind into heaven, that Elijah left with Elisha from Gilgal.
2 Élie dit à Élisée: « Reste ici, je te prie, car Yahweh m’envoie jusqu’à Béthel. » Élisée répondit: « Yahweh est vivant et ton âme est vivante! Je ne te quitterai point! » Et ils descendirent à Béthel.
Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, please, because Yahweh has sent me to Bethel.” Elisha replied, “As Yahweh lives, and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.
3 Les fils des prophètes qui étaient à Béthel sortirent vers Élisée, et lui dirent: « Sais-tu que Yahweh enlèvera aujourd’hui ton maître de dessus ta tête? » Il répondit: « Je le sais aussi; tenez-vous en paix. »
The sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that Yahweh will take away your master from you today?” Elisha replied, “Yes, I know it, but do not talk about it.”
4 Élie lui dit: « Élisée, reste ici, je te prie, car Yahweh m’envoie à Jéricho. » Il répondit: « Yahweh est vivant et ton âme est vivante! Je ne te quitterai point! » Et ils arrivèrent à Jéricho.
Elijah said to him, “Elisha, wait here, please, for Yahweh has sent me to Jericho.” Then Elisha replied, “As Yahweh lives, and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went to Jericho.
5 Les fils des prophètes qui étaient à Jéricho s’approchèrent d’Élisée et lui dirent: « Sais-tu que Yahweh enlèvera aujourd’hui ton maître de dessus ta tête? » Il répondit: « Je le sais aussi; tenez-vous en paix. »
Then the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho came to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that Yahweh will take away your master from you today?” Elisha answered, “Yes, I know it, but do not talk about it.”
6 Élie lui dit: « Reste ici, je te prie, car Yahweh m’envoie au Jourdain. » Il répondit: « Yahweh est vivant et ton âme est vivante! Je ne te quitterai point! » Et ils s’en allèrent tous deux.
Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here, please, for Yahweh has sent me to the Jordan.” Elisha replied, “As Yahweh lives, and as you live, I will not leave you.” So the two went on.
7 Cinquante hommes d’entre les fils des prophètes allèrent après eux et se tinrent à distance, à l’opposé, et eux deux s’arrêtèrent au bord du Jourdain.
Later, fifty of the sons of the prophets stood opposite them at a distance while the two stood by the Jordan.
8 Alors Élie, prenant son manteau, le roula et en frappa les eaux, qui se partagèrent d’un côté et de l’autre, et ils passèrent tous deux à sec.
Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up, and struck the water with it. The river divided on both sides so that the two of them walked over on dry ground.
9 Lorsqu’ils eurent passé, Élie dit à Élisée: « Demande ce que tu veux que je fasse pour toi, avant que je sois enlevé d’avec toi. » Élisée répondit: « Que vienne sur moi une double portion de ton esprit? »
It came about, after they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask me what I should do for you before I am taken from you.” Elisha replied, “Please let a double portion of your spirit come on me.”
10 Élie dit: « Tu demandes une chose difficile. Si tu me vois pendant que je serai enlevé d’avec toi, il t’arrivera ainsi; sinon, cela n’arrivera pas. »
Elijah answered, “You have asked for a difficult thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, this will happen for you, but if not, it will not happen.”
11 Ils continuaient de marcher en s’entretenant, et voici qu’un char de feu et des chevaux de feu les séparèrent l’un de l’autre, et Élie monta au ciel dans un tourbillon.
As they still went on and talked, behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared, which separated the two men from each other, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
12 Élisée regardait et criait: « Mon père! mon père! Char d’Israël et ses cavaliers! » Et il ne le vit plus. Il saisit alors ses vêtements et les déchira en deux morceaux,
Elisha saw it and cried out, “My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and their horsemen!” He saw Elijah no more, and he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces.
13 et il releva le manteau d’Élie qui était tombé de dessus lui. Puis, étant revenu au Jourdain, il s’arrêta sur le bord;
He picked up Elijah's cloak that had fallen off him, and went back to stand by the bank of the Jordan.
14 et, prenant le manteau d’Élie qui était tombé de dessus lui, il en frappa les eaux et dit: « Où est Yahweh, le Dieu d’Élie? Où est-il? » Lorsqu’il eut frappé les eaux, elles se partagèrent d’un côté et de l’autre, et Élisée passa.
He struck the water with Elijah's cloak that had fallen and said, “Where is Yahweh, the God of Elijah?” When he had struck the waters, they divided on both sides and Elisha crossed over.
15 Les fils des prophètes qui étaient à Jéricho, à l’opposé, le virent et dirent: « L’esprit d’Élie repose sur Élisée; » et, allant à sa rencontre, ils se prosternèrent contre terre devant lui.
When the sons of the prophets who were from Jericho saw him across from them, they said, “The spirit of Elijah does rest on Elisha!” So they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
16 Ils lui dirent: « Voici qu’il y a parmi tes serviteurs cinquante hommes vaillants: qu’ils aillent donc chercher ton maître. Peut-être que l’Esprit de Yahweh, l’ayant emporté, l’a jeté sur une des montagnes ou dans une des vallées. » Il répondit: « Ne les envoyez pas. »
They said to him, “See now, among your servants there are fifty strong men. Let them go, we ask, and look for your master, in case the Spirit of Yahweh has taken him up and thrown him onto some mountain or into some valley.” Elisha answered, “No, do not send them.”
17 Mais ils le pressèrent jusqu’à le couvrir de confusion, et il leur dit: « Envoyez-les. » Ils envoyèrent cinquante hommes, qui cherchèrent Élie pendant trois jours, sans le trouver.
But when they urged Elisha until he was ashamed, he said, “Send them.” Then they sent fifty men, and they looked for three days, but did not find him.
18 Lorsqu’ils furent de retour auprès d’ Élisée, — car il demeurait à Jéricho, — il leur dit: « Ne vous avais-je pas dit: N’allez pas? »
They came back to Elisha, while he stayed at Jericho, and he said to them, “Did I not say to you, 'Do not go'?”
19 Les gens de la ville dirent à Élisée: « Le séjour de la ville est bon, comme le voit mon seigneur; mais les eaux sont mauvaises et le pays est stérile. »
The men of the city said to Elisha, “See, we beg of you, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my master can see, but the water is bad and the land is not fruitful.”
20 Il dit: « Apportez-moi une écuelle neuve, et mettez-y du sel. » Et ils la lui apportèrent.
Elisha replied, “Bring me a new bowl and put salt in it,” so they brought it to him.
21 Il alla vers la source des eaux et, y ayant jeté du sel, il dit: « Ainsi dit Yahweh: J’assainis ces eaux; il n’en proviendra plus ni mort, ni stérilité. »
Elisha went out to the spring of water and threw salt in it; then he said, “Yahweh says this, 'I have healed these waters. From this time on, there will be no more death or unfruitful land.'”
22 Et les eaux furent assainies jusqu’à ce jour, selon la parole qu’Élisée avait dite.
So the waters were healed to this day, by the word which Elisha spoke.
23 Il monta de là à Béthel; et comme il montait par la route, des petits garçons sortirent de la ville et se moquèrent de lui; ils lui disaient: « Monte, chauve! monte, chauve! »
Then Elisha went up from there to Bethel. As he was going up the road, young boys came out of the city and mocked him; they said to him, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!”
24 Il se retourna pour les regarder, et il les maudit au nom de Yahweh. Et deux ours sortirent de la forêt et déchirèrent quarante-deux de ces enfants.
Elisha looked behind him and saw them; he called on Yahweh to curse them. Then two female bears came out of the woods and injured forty-two of the boys.
25 De là il alla sur la montagne de Carmel, et de là il revint à Samarie.
Then Elisha went from there to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.
