2 Chroniques 18
1 Josaphat avait en abondance des richesses et de la gloire, et il s’allia par mariage avec Achab.
Now Josaphat was rich and very glorious, and was joined by affinity to Achab.
2 Au bout de quelques années, il descendit auprès d’Achab à Samarie, et Achab tua pour lui et pour le peuple qui était avec lui des brebis et des bœufs en grand nombre, et il l’engagea à monter à Ramoth-en-Galaad.
And he went down to him after some years to Samaria: and Achab at his coming killed sheep and oxen in abundance for him and the people that came with him: and he persuaded him to go up to Ramoth Galaad.
3 Achab, roi d’Israël, dit à Josaphat, roi de Juda: « Viendras-tu avec moi à Ramoth-en-Galaad? » Josaphat lui répondit: « Il en sera de moi comme de toi, de mon peuple comme de ton peuple; nous irons l’attaquer avec toi. »
And Achab king of Israel said to Josaphat king of Juda: Come with me to Ramoth Galaad. And he answered him: Thou art as I am, and my people as thy people, and we will be with thee in the war.
4 Josaphat dit au roi d’Israël: « Consulte maintenant, je te prie, la parole de Yahweh. »
And Josaphat said to the king of Israel: Inquire, I beseech thee, at present the word of the Lord.
5 Le roi d’Israël convoqua les prophètes, au nombre de quatre cents, et leur dit: « Irons-nous attaquer Ramoth-en-Galaad, ou m’ en abstiendrai-je? « Ils répondirent: « Monte, et Dieu la livrera entre les mains du roi. »
So the king of Israel gathered together of the prophets four hundred men, and he said to them: Shall we go to Ramoth Galaad to fight, or shall we forbear? But they said: Go up, and God will deliver it into the king’s hand.
6 Mais Josaphat dit: « N’y a-t-il plus ici aucun prophète de Yahweh, par qui nous puissions l’interroger? »
And Josaphat said: Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may inquire also of him?
7 Le roi d’Israël répondit à Josaphat: « Il y a encore un homme par qui l’on pourrait consulter Yahweh; mais je le hais, car il ne prophétise sur moi rien de bon, mais toujours du mal: c’est Michée, fils de Jemla. « Et Josaphat dit: « Que le roi ne parle plus ainsi! »
And the king of Israel said to Josaphat: There is one man, of whom we may ask the will of the Lord: but I hate him, for he never prophesieth good to me, but always evil: and it is Micheas the son of Jemla. And Josaphat said: Speak not thus, O king.
8 Alors le roi d’Israël, appelant un eunuque, lui dit: « Fais-venir de suite Michée, fils de Jemla. »
And the king of Israel called one of the eunuchs, and said to him: Call quickly Micheas the son of Jemla.
9 Le roi d’Israël et Josaphat, roi de Juda, étaient assis chacun sur son trône, revêtus de leurs habits royaux; ils étaient assis dans la place, à l’entrée de la porte de Samarie; et tous les prophètes prophétisaient devant eux.
Now the king of Israel, and Josaphat king of Juda, both sat on their thrones, clothed in royal robes, and they sat in the open court by the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets prophesied before them.
10 Sédécias, fils de Chanaana, s’était fait des cornes de fer, et il dit: « Ainsi dit Yahweh: Avec ces cornes tu frapperas les Syriens jusqu’à les exterminer. »
And Sedecias the son of Chanaana made him horns of iron, and said: Thus saith the Lord: With these shalt thou push Syria, till thou destroy it.
11 Et tous les prophètes prophétisaient de même, en disant: « Monte à Ramoth-en-Galaad et sois vainqueur, car Yahweh la livrera entre les mains du roi! »
And all the prophets prophesied in like manner, and said: Go up to Ramoth Galaad, and thou shalt prosper, and the Lord will deliver them into the king’s hand.
12 Le messager qui était allé appeler Michée lui parla en ces termes: « Voici que les paroles des prophètes sont unanimes pour annoncer du bien au roi; que ta parole soit donc conforme à celle de chacun d’eux: annonce du bien! « Michée répondit:
And the messenger that went to call Micheas, said to him: Behold the words of all the prophets with one mouth declare good to the king: I beseech thee therefore let not thy word disagree with them, and speak thou also good success.
13 « Yahweh est vivant! Ce que mon Dieu dira, je l’annoncerai! »
And Micheas answered him: As the Lord liveth, whatsoever my God shall say to me, that will I speak.
14 Lorsqu’il fut arrivé près du roi, le roi lui dit: « Michée, irons-nous attaquer Ramoth-en-Galaad, ou m’ en abstiendrai-je? « Il répondit: « Montez, et soyez vainqueurs! car ils sont livrés entre vos mains. »
So he came to the king: and the king said to him: Micheas, shall we go to Ramoth Galaad to fight, or forbear? And he answered him: Go up, for all shall succeed prosperously, and the enemies shall be delivered into your hands.
15 Et le roi lui dit: « Jusqu’à combien de fois t’adjurerai-je de ne me dire que la vérité au nom de Yahweh? »
And the king said: I adjure thee again and again to say nothing but the truth to me, in the name of the Lord.
16 Michée répondit: « Je vois tout Israël dispersé sur les montagnes, comme les brebis qui m’ont pas de berger; et Yahweh dit: Ces gens n’ont pas de maître: qu’ils retournent en paix, chacun dans sa maison. »
Then he said: I saw all Israel scattered in the mountains, like sheep without a shepherd: and the Lord said: These have no masters: let every man return to his own house in peace.
17 Le roi d’Israël dit à Josaphat: « Ne te l’ai-je pas dit? Il ne prophétise sur moi rien de bon, mais seulement du mal. »
And the king of Israel said to Josaphat: Did I not tell thee that this man would not prophesy me any good, but evil?
18 Michée dit: « Écoutez donc la parole de Yahweh! J’ai vu Yahweh assis sur son trône et toute l’armée du ciel se tenait à sa droite et à sa gauche.
Then he said: Hear ye therefore the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the army of heaven standing by him on the right hand and on the left.
19 Et Yahweh dit: « Qui trompera Achab, roi d’Israël, pour qu’il monte à Ramoth-en-Galaad et qu’il y périsse? Ils répondirent l’un d’une manière, l’autre d’une autre.
And the Lord said: Who shall deceive Achab king of Israel, that he may go up and fall in Ramoth Galaad? And when one spoke in this manner, and another otherwise:
20 Alors l’esprit vint se tenir devant Yahweh et dit: Moi, je le tromperai. Yahweh lui dit: Comment?
There came forth a spirit, and stood before the Lord, and said: I will deceive him. And the Lord said to him: By what means wilt thou deceive him?
21 Il répondit: Je sortirai et je serai un esprit de mensonge dans la bouche de tous ses prophètes. Yahweh lui dit: Tu le tromperas, et tu en viendras à bout; sors et fais ainsi!
And he answered: I will go out, and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And the Lord said: Thou shalt deceive, and shalt prevail: go out, and do so.
22 Voici donc que Yahweh a mis un esprit de mensonge dans la bouche de tes prophètes qui sont là. Et Yahweh a prononcé du mal sur toi. »
Now therefore behold the Lord hath put a spirit of lying in the mouth of all thy prophets, and the Lord hath spoken evil against thee.
23 Mais Sédécias, fils de Chanaana, s’étant approché, frappa Michée sur la joue, et dit: « Par quel chemin l’esprit de Yahweh est-il sorti de moi pour te parler? »
And Sedecias the son of Chanaana came, and struck Micheas on the cheek and said: Which way went the spirit of the Lord from me, to speak to thee?
24 Michée répondit: « Voici que tu le verras en ce jour-là où tu iras de chambre en chambre pour te cacher. »
And Micheas said: Thou thyself shalt see in that day, when thou shalt go in from chamber to chamber, to hide thyself.
25 Le roi d’Israël dit: « Prenez Michée, et amenez-le à Amon, gouverneur de la ville, et à Joas, fils du roi.
And the king of Israel commanded, saying: Take Micheas, and carry him to Amen the governor of the city, and to Joas the son of Amelech,
26 Vous leur direz: Ainsi dit le roi: Mettez cet homme en prison et nourrissez-le du pain d’affliction et de l’eau d’affliction, jusqu’à ce que je revienne en paix. »
And say: Thus saith the king: Put this fellow in prison, and give him bread and water in a small quantity till I return in peace.
27 Et Michée dit: « Si vraiment tu reviens en paix, Yahweh n’a point parlé par moi. « Il ajouta: « Entendez, vous tous, peuples! »
And Micheas said: If thou return in peace, the Lord hath not spoken by me. And he said: Hear, all ye people.
28 Le roi d’Israël et Josaphat, roi de Juda, montèrent à Ramoth-en-Galaad.
So the king of Israel and Josaphat king of Juda went up to Ramoth Galaad.
29 Le roi d’Israël dit à Josaphat: « Je veux me déguiser pour aller au combat; mais toi, revêts-toi de tes habits. « Et le roi d’Israël se déguisa, et ils allèrent au combat.
And the king of Israel said to Josaphat: I will change my dress, and so I will go to the battle, but put thou on thy own garments. And the king of Israel having changed his dress, went to the battle.
30 Le roi de Syrie avait donné un ordre aux chefs de ses chars, en ces termes: « Vous n’attaquerez ni petit ni grand, mais seulement le roi d’Israël. »
Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of his cavalry, saying: Fight ye not with small, or great, but with the king of Israel only.
31 Quand les chefs des chars virent Josaphat, ils dirent: « C’est le roi d’Israël; et ils l’entourèrent pour l’attaquer. Josaphat poussa un cri et Yahweh le secourut, et Dieu attira d’auprès de lui les Syriens.
So when the captains of the cavalry saw Josaphat, they said: This is the king of Israel. And they surrounded him to attack him: but he cried to the Lord, and he helped him, and turned them away from him.
32 Quand les chefs des chars virent que ce n’était pas le roi d’Israël, ils se détournèrent de lui.
For when the captains of the cavalry saw, that he was not the king of Israel, they left him.
33 Alors un homme tira de son arc au hasard et atteignit le roi d’Israël entre les jointures et la cuirasse. Le roi dit à celui qui conduisait le char: « Tourne, et fais-moi sortir du camp, car je suis blessé. »
And it happened that one of the people shot an arrow at a venture, and struck the king of Israel between the neck and the shoulders, and he said to his chariot man: Turn thy hand, and carry me out of the battle, for I am wounded.
34 Le combat devient violent ce jour-là. Le roi d’Israël était tenu debout sur son char en face des Syriens, jusqu’au soir, où il mourut vers le coucher du soleil.
And the fight was ended that day: but the king of Israel stood in his chariot against the Syrians until the evening, and died at the sunset.
