2 Chroniques 14

1 Abia se coucha avec ses pères, et on l’enterra dans la ville de David. Asa, son fils, régna à sa place; de son temps, le pays se reposa pendant dix ans.

And Abiyah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Assa his son became king in his stead. In his days the land had repose ten years.

2 Asa fit ce qui est bien et droit aux yeux de Yahweh, son Dieu. Il fit disparaître les autels de l’étranger et les hauts lieux,

And Assa did what is good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God.

3 il brisa les stèles et coupa les aschérahs.

And he removed the altars of the strange [gods], and the high-places, and broke up the statues, and cut down the groves;

4 Il ordonna à Juda de rechercher Yahweh, le Dieu de ses pères, et d’accomplir la loi et le précepte.

And he ordered Judah to seek the Lord the God of their fathers, and to execute the law and the commandment.

5 Il fit disparaître de toutes les villes de Juda les hauts lieux et les statues; et le royaume fut en repos devant lui.

Also he removed out of all the cities of Judah the high-places and the sun-images: and the kingdom had repose before him.

6 Il bâtit des villes fortes en Juda; car le pays était en repos, et il n’y eut pas de guerre contre lui pendant ces années là, parce que Yahweh lui donna du repos.

And he built fortified cities in Judah; for the land had repose, and no one had war with him in those years; because the Lord had given him rest.

7 Il dit à Juda: « Bâtissons ces villes, entourons-les de murs, de tours, de portes et de serrures; le pays est encore ouvert devant nous; car nous avons recherché Yahweh, notre Dieu; nous l’avons recherché, et il nous a donné du repos de tous côtés. « Ils bâtirent donc et réussirent.

Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and surround them with walls, and towers, gates, and bars: the land is yet before us; because we have sought the Lord our God, —we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.

8 Asa avait une armée de trois cent mille hommes de Juda, portant le bouclier et la lance, et de deux cent quatre-vingt mille de Benjamin, portant le bouclier et tirant de l’arc, tous vaillants hommes.

And Assa had an army that bore targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bore shields and drew the bow, two hundred and eighty thousand: all these were mighty men of valor.

9 Zara, l’éthiopien, sortit contre eux avec une armée d’un million d’hommes et trois cents chars, et il s’avança jusqu’à Marésa.

And there came out against them Zerach the Ethiopian with an army of a thousand times thousand, and three hundred chariots; and he came as far as Mareshah.

10 Asa sortit contre lui, et ils se rangèrent en bataille dans la vallée de Séphata, près de Marésa.

Then went Assa out against him, and they set themselves in battle-array in the valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.

11 Asa cria vers Yahweh, son Dieu, et dit: « Yahweh, vous pouvez secourir celui qui est faible aussi facilement que celui qui est fort; secourez-nous, Yahweh, notre Dieu! Car c’est sur vous que nous nous appuyons, et c’est en votre nom que nous sommes venus contre cette multitude. Yahweh, vous êtes notre Dieu: qu’un homme ne l’emporte pas contre vous! »

And Assa called unto the Lord his God, and said, Lord, nothing can hinder thee to help, whether it be the mighty, or those that have no power: help us, O Lord our God; for on thee do we rely, and in thy name are we come against this multitude. O Lord, thou art our God! no mortal can place a restraint against thee.

12 Yahweh frappa les Ethiopiens devant Asa et devant Juda, et les Ethiopiens prirent la fuite.

Thereupon did the Lord strike down the Ethiopians before Assa, and before Judah: and the Ethiopians fled.

13 Asa et le peuple qui était avec lui les poursuivirent jusqu’à Gérare, et il tomba un si grand nombre d’Ethiopiens, qu’il n’y eut plus pour eux espoir de rétablissement, car ils furent brisés devant Yahweh et devant son camp. Asa et son peuple firent un très grand butin;

And Assa and the people that were with him pursued them as far as Gerar: and there fell of the Ethiopians [so many], that they could not recover themselves; for they were broken down before the Lord, and before his camp; and they carried away exceedingly much booty.

14 ils frappèrent toutes les villes autour de Gérare, car la terreur de Yahweh était sur elles; ils pillèrent toutes les villes, car il s’y trouvait un grand butin.

And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the dread of the Lord was upon them: and they plundered all the cities; for abundant spoil was in them.

15 Ils frappèrent aussi les tentes des troupeaux, et ils capturèrent un grand nombre de brebis et des chameaux; et ils s’en revinrent à Jérusalem.

And also the tents of [the owners of] cattle did they smite, and they carried away sheep in abundance, and camels, and returned to Jerusalem.
