1 Samuel 5

1 Les Philistins, s'étant emparés de l'arche de Dieu, la transportèrent d'Eben-Ezer à Azot.

Now the Philistines had taken the ark of God, and they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

2 Les Philistins prirent l'arche de Dieu, la firent entrer dans la maison de Dagon, et la placèrent auprès de Dagon.

The Philistines took it, and brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.

3 Le lendemain, les Azotiens se levèrent de bon matin, et voici que Dagon était étendu la face contre terre devant l'arche de Yahweh. Ils prirent Dagon et le remirent à sa place.

And the Ashdodites rose early on the next day, and look, Dagon had fallen on his face before the ark of Jehovah. So they raised up Dagon and set him in his place again.

4 Le jour suivant, ils se levèrent de bon matin et voici que Dagon était encore étendu la face contre terre devant l'arche de Yahweh; la tête de Dagon et ses deux mains détachées gisaient sur le seuil,

And it happened when they arose early the next morning, look, Dagon had fallen on his face before the ark of Jehovah; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off on the threshold. Only Dagon's torso was intact.

5 et il ne lui restait que le tronc en forme de poisson. C'est pourquoi les prêtres de Dagon et tous ceux qui entrent dans la maison de Dagon à Azot ne posent pas le pied sur le seuil de Dagon, jusqu'à ce jour.

Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any who come into Dagon's house, step on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod, to this day.

6 La main de Yahweh, s'appesantit sur les Azotiens et les désola; il les frappa de tumeurs, à Azot et dans son territoire.

But the hand of Jehovah was heavy on the Ashdodites, and he ravaged them and afflicted them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territory. And he brought up against them mice, and they burst out in their ships, and mice sprang up in the midst of their land, and there was a great terror of death in the city.

7 Voyant ce qui arrivait, les Azotiens dirent: « Que l'arche du Dieu d'Israël ne reste pas chez nous, car il appesantit sa main sur nous et sur Dagon, notre dieu. »

When the men of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, "The ark of God shall not stay with us; for his hand is severe on us, and on Dagon our god."

8 Et ils convoquèrent chez eux par des envoyés tous les princes des Philistins, et ils dirent: « Que ferons-nous de l'arche du Dieu d'Israël? » Les princes répondirent: « Que l'on transporte à Geth l'arche du Dieu d'Israël! » Et l'on y transporta l'arche du Dieu d'Israël.

So they sent and gathered all the lords of the Philistines to them, and said, "What shall we do with the ark of God?" Then the Gittites answered, "Let the ark of God be carried over to us." So they brought the ark of God to Gath.

9 Mais, dès qu'on l'eut transportée, la main de Yahweh fut sur la ville, et il y eut une très grande épouvante; il frappa les gens de la ville, depuis le petit jusqu'au grand, et il leur poussa des tumeurs.

And it came about that after they had brought it around, the hand of Jehovah was against the city with a very great confusion: and he struck the men of the city, both small and great; and tumors broke out on them.

10 Alors ils envoyèrent l'arche de Dieu à Accaron. Lorsque l'arche de Dieu entra dans Accaron, les Accaronites poussèrent des cris, en disant: « On a transporté chez nous l'arche du Dieu d'Israël, pour nous faire mourir, nous et notre peuple. »

So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. It happened, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, "Why have you brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to kill us and our people?"

11 Et ils convoquèrent par des envoyés tous les princes des Philistins, et ils dirent: « Renvoyez l'arche du Dieu d'Israël; qu'elle retourne en son lieu, afin qu'elle ne nous fasse pas mourir, nous et notre peuple. »

And they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, "Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, so that it will not kill us and our people." For there was a panic throughout all the city when the ark of God arrived there.

12 Car il y avait dans toute la ville une frayeur mortelle, et la main de Dieu s'y appesantissait fortement. Les gens qui ne mourraient pas étaient frappés de tumeurs, et les cris de détresse de la ville montaient jusqu'au ciel.

The men who did not die were struck with the tumors; and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
