1 Samuel 4

1 La parole de Samuel fut adressée à tout Israël. Israël sortit au devant des Philistins, pour combattre; ils campèrent près d’Eben-Ezer, et les Philistins étaient campés à Aphec.

And so it was, when the word of Samuel had reached all Israel, that Israel went forth to meet the Philistines in battle, and they encamped near Eben-ezer, while, the Philistines, encamped in Aphek.

2 Les Philistins, s’étant rangés en bataille contre Israël, le combat s’engagea, et Israël fut battu par les Philistins, et ils tuèrent environ quatre mille hommes en bataille rangée dans la plaine.

And the Philistines set themselves in array to meet Israel, and, when the battle spread, then was Israel smitten before the Philistines, —and there were slain of the army in the field about four thousand men.

3 Le peuple rentra au camp, et les anciens d’Israël dirent: « Pourquoi Yahweh nous a-t-il battus aujourd’hui devant les Philistins? Faisons venir vers nous de Silo l’arche de l’Alliance de Yahweh; qu’elle vienne au milieu de nous, et qu’elle nous délivre de la main de nos ennemis. »

And, when the people came into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath Yahweh smitten us to-day, before the Philistines? Let us fetch unto us, out of Shiloh, the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, that, when it cometh into our midst, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

4 Le peuple envoya à Silo, et l’on apporta de cette ville l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh des armées, qui est assis sur les Chérubins. Les deux fils d’Héli, Ophni et Phinées, étaient là avec l’arche de l’alliance de Dieu.

So the people sent to Shiloh, and bare from thence the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of hosts, who inhabiteth the cherubim, —and, there, were the two sons of Eli, with the ark of the covenant of God, namely, Hophni and Phinehas.

5 Lorsque l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh entra dans le camp, tout Israël poussa de si grands cris de joie que la terre en retentit.

And so it was, when the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came into the camp, that all Israel brake out into a loud shout of joy, —so that the earth rang again.

6 Le bruit de ces clameurs fut entendu des Philistins, et ils dirent: « Que signifie le bruit de ces grands cris de joie au camp des Hébreux? » Et ils apprirent que l’arche de Yahweh était venue au camp.

And, when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said—What meaneth the noise of this loud shout of joy in the camp of the Hebrews? And they learned that, the ark of Yahweh, had come into the camp.

7 Les Philistins eurent peur, parce qu’ils disaient: « Dieu est venu dans le camps. » Et ils dirent: « Malheur à nous! car chose pareille n’a jamais eu lieu jusqu’à présent.

And the Philistines were afraid, for they said—God hath come into the camp. And they said—Woe to us! for there hath not happened the like of this, heretofore.

8 Malheur à nous! Qui nous délivrera de la main de ces dieux puissants? Ce sont ces dieux qui ont frappé les Égyptiens de toutes sortes de plaies dans le désert.

Woe to us! Who shall rescue us out of the hand of these majestic gods? These, are the gods, who smote the Egyptians with all manner of smiting in the desert!

9 Montrez-vous forts et agissez en hommes, Philistins, de peur que vous ne soyez asservis aux Hébreux, comme ils vous sont asservis. Soyez des hommes et combattez. »

Take courage, and quit yourselves like men, ye Philistines, lest ye come into bondage to the Hebrews, as they have been in bondage unto you, —therefore must ye quit yourselves like men, and fight.

10 Les Philistins livrèrent bataille, et Israël fut battu, et chacun s’enfuit dans sa tente; il y eut une très grande défaite, et il tomba du côté d’Israël trente mille hommes de pied.

So the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man to his home; and the slaughter became exceeding great, —and there fell of Israel—thirty thousand footmen.

11 L’arche de Dieu fut prise, et les deux fils d’Héli, Ophni et Phinées, périrent.

And, the ark of God, was taken, —and, the two sons of Eli, were slain, Hophni and Phinehas.

12 Un homme de Benjamin accourut du champ de bataille, et vint à Silo le même jour, les vêtements déchirés et la tête couverte de poussière.

And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and entered Shiloh on the same day, —with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

13 Lorsqu’il arriva, Héli était assis sur un siège près du chemin, dans l’attente, car son cœur tremblait à cause de l’arche de Dieu. Cet homme étant entré dans la ville pour porter ces nouvelles, toute la ville poussa une clameur.

And, when he entered, lo! Eli was sitting upon his chair, by the wayside, watching, for his heart was trembling for the ark of God, —and, the man, entered to tell the news in the city, and all the city made outcry.

14 En entendant le bruit de cette clameur, Héli dit: « Quel est ce bruit de tumulte? » Et aussitôt l’homme vint apporter la nouvelle à Héli.

And, when Eli heard the noise of the outcry, he said—What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And, the man, hasted, and came, and told Eli.

15 Or Héli était âgé de quatre-vingt-dix-huit ans; il avait les yeux fixes et ne pouvait plus voir.

Now, Eli, was ninety-eight years old; and his eyes were fixed, that he could not see.

16 L’homme dit à Héli: « J’arrive du champ de bataille, et c’est du champ de bataille que je me suis enfui aujourd’hui. » Héli dit: « Que s’est-il passé mon fils? »

So the man said unto Eli, I, am he that came in from the army, yea, I, from the army, fled to-day. And he said—What is the thing that hath happened, my son?

17 Le messager répondit: « Israël a fui devant les Philistins, et il y a eu un grand massacre parmi le peuple; et même tes deux fils, Ophni et Phinées, sont morts, et l’arche de Dieu a été prise. »

And the bearer of tidings answered, and said—Israel hath fled before the Philistines, Moreover also, a great smiting, hath taken place among the people, —Moreover also, thy two sons, are slain, Hophni and Phinehas, And, the ark of God, is taken.

18 À peine eut-il nommé l’arche de Dieu, qu’Héli tomba de son siège à la renverse, à côté de la porte; il se rompit la nuque et mourut; car c’était un homme vieux et pesant. Il avait jugé Israël pendant quarante ans.

And it came to pass, when he mentioned the ark of God, that he fell from off his seat backwards, at the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died, for, old, was the man, and, heavy, —and, he had judged Israel forty years.

19 Sa belle-fille, femme de Phinées, était enceinte et sur le point d’accoucher. Lorsqu’elle entendit la nouvelle de la prise de l’arche de Dieu, de la mort de son beau-père et de son mari, elle se courba et enfanta, car les douleurs lui survinrent.

Now, his daughter-in-law, wife of Phinehas, was with child, ready to give birth, and, when she heard the tidings, as to the taking of the ark of God, and the death of her father-in-law, and her husband, she bowed herself and gave birth, for her pains had seized her.

20 Comme elle allait mourir, les femmes qui se trouvaient près d’elle lui dirent: « Ne crains point, car tu as enfanté un fils. » Mais elle ne répondit pas et n’y fit pas attention.

And, about the time of her death, the women that stood by her said: Do not fear, for, to a son, hast thou given birth. But she neither answered nor regarded.

21 Elle appela l’enfant Ichabod, en disant: « La gloire est emportée d’Israël à cause de la prise de l’arche de Dieu et à cause de la mort de son beau-père et de son mari.

And she called the boy I-chabod ["Where’s the glory?"]! saying, Exiled is the glory from Israel, —In regard to the taking of the ark of God, and to her father-in-law, and to her husband.

22 Elle dit: « La gloire est emportée d’Israël, car l’arche de Dieu est prise! »

So she said—Exiled is the glory from Israel, —For the ark of God hath been taken.
