1 Samuel 16
1 Yahweh dit à Samuel: « Jusques à quand pleureras-tu sur Saül, alors que je l'ai rejeté, afin qu'il ne règne plus sur Israël? Remplis ta corne d'huile et va; je t'envoie chez Isaï de Béthléem, car j'ai vu parmi ses fils le roi que je veux. »
And Yhwh said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Beth–lehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
2 Samuel dit: « Comment irais-je? Saül l'apprendra, et il me tuera. » Et Yahweh dit: « Tu prendras avec toi une génisse, et tu diras: C'est pour offrir un sacrifice à Yahweh que je suis venu.
And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And Yhwh said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Yhwh.
3 Tu inviteras Isaï au sacrifice, et je te ferai connaître ce que tu auras à faire, et tu oindras pour moi celui que je te désignerai. »
And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
4 Samuel fit ce que Yahweh avait dit, et il se rendit à Bethléem. Les anciens de la ville vinrent inquiets au-devant de lui et dirent: « Ton arrivée est-elle pour la paix? »
And Samuel did that which Yhwh spake, and came to Beth–lehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
5 Il répondit: « Pour la paix! Je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à Yahweh. Sanctifiez-vous et venez avec moi au sacrifice. » Et il sanctifia Isaï et ses fils et les invita au sacrifice.
And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto Yhwh: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6 Lorsqu'ils furent entrés, Samuel aperçut Eliab et dit: « Certainement l'oint de Yahweh est devant lui. »
And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely Yhwh's anointed is before him.
7 Et Yahweh dit à Samuel: « Ne prends pas garde à sa figure et à la hauteur de sa taille, car je l'ai écarté. Il ne s'agit pas de ce que l'homme voit; l'homme regarde le visage, mais Yahweh regarde le cœur. »
But Yhwh said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, But Yhwh looketh on the heart.
8 Isaï appela Abinadab et le fit passer devant Samuel; et Samuel dit: « Ce n'est pas encore celui-ci que Yahweh a choisi. »
Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath Yhwh chosen this.
9 Isaï fit passer Samma; et Samuel dit: « Ce n'est pas encore celui-ci que Yahweh a choisi. »
Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath Yhwh chosen this.
10 Isaï fit passer ses sept fils devant Samuel; et Samuel dit à Isaï: « Yahweh n'a choisi aucun de ceux-ci. »
Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Yhwh hath not chosen these.
11 Alors Samuel dit à Isaï: « Sont-ce là tous les jeunes gens? » Il répondit: « Il y a encore le plus jeune, et voilà qu'il fait paître les brebis. » Samuel dit à Isaï: « Envoie-le chercher, car nous ne nous mettrons point à table qu'il ne soit venu ici. »
And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
12 Isaï l'envoya chercher. Or il était blond, avec de beaux yeux et une belle figure. Yahweh dit: « Lève-toi, oins-le, car c'est lui! »
And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And Yhwh said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
13 Samuel, ayant pris la corne d'huile, l'oignit au milieu de ses frères, et l'Esprit de Yahweh fondit sur David à partir de ce jour et dans la suite. Samuel se leva et s'en alla à Ramatha.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of Yhwh came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
14 L'Esprit de Yahweh se retira de Saül, et un mauvais esprit venu de Yahweh fondit sur lui.
But the Spirit of Yhwh departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yhwh troubled him.
15 Les serviteurs de Saül lui dirent: « Voici qu'un mauvais esprit de Dieu fond sur toi.
And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
16 Que notre seigneur parle; tes serviteurs sont devant toi, ils chercheront un homme sachant jouer de la harpe, et, quand le mauvais esprit venu de Dieu sera sur toi, il jouera de sa main, et tu seras soulagé. »
Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
17 Saül répondit à ses serviteurs: « Trouvez-moi donc un homme habile à jouer, et amenez-le-moi. »
And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
18 L'un des serviteurs, prenant la parole, dit: « J'ai vu un fils d'Isaï de Bethléem, qui sait jouer; il est fort et vaillant guerrier, parlant bien; c'est un homme de belle figure, et Yahweh est sur lui. »
Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth–lehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, And Yhwh is with him.
19 Saül envoya des messagers à Isaï, pour lui dire: « Envoie-moi David, ton fils, qui est avec les brebis. »
Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.
20 Isaï prit un âne, avec du pain, une outre de vin et un chevreau, et les envoya à Saül par David, son fils.
And Jesse took a donkey laden with bread, and a skin of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
21 Arrivé chez Saül, David se tint devant lui; et Saül le prit en affection, et il devint son écuyer.
And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
22 Et Saül envoya dire à Isaï: « Que David, je te prie, reste devant moi, car il a trouvé grâce à mes yeux. »
And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
23 Lorsque l'esprit venu de Dieu était sur Saül, David prenait la harpe et jouait de sa main, et Saül se calmait et se trouvait bien, et le mauvais esprit se retirait de lui.
And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
