1 Samuel 13
1 Saül était âgé de… ans lorsqu’il devint roi et il régna deux ans sur Israël.
Saul was thirty when he became king, and he reigned over Israel for forty-two years.
2 Saül se choisit trente mille hommes d’Israël: deux mille étaient avec lui à Machmas et sur la montagne de Béthel, et mille étaient avec Jonathas à Gabaa de Benjamin. Et il renvoya le reste du peuple, chacun dans sa tente.
Saul had chosen three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand of them were with Saul in Michmash and the hill country of Bethel, and another thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. He sent the rest of the army home.
3 Jonathas battit le poste des Philistins qui était à Gabée et les Philistins l’apprirent. Et Saül fit sonner de la trompette dans tout le pays, en disant: « Que les Hébreux entendent! »
Jonathan attacked the Philistine garrison at Geba. The Philistines soon heard about it, so Saul had the trumpet call to arms sounded throughout the land, saying, “Hebrews, pay attention!”
4 Tout Israël entendit la nouvelle: « Saül a battu le poste des Philistins, et même Israël s’est rendu odieux auprès des Philistins. » Et le peuple fut convoqué auprès de Saül, à Galgala.
All of Israel heard the news, “Saul has attacked the Philistine garrison, and now Israel is like a bad smell to the Philistines!” So the whole army was called up to join Saul at Gilgal.
5 Les Philistins s’assemblèrent pour combattre Israël; ils avaient trente mille chars, six mille cavaliers, et un peuple innombrable comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer. Ils montèrent et campèrent à Machmas, à l’orient de Beth-Aven.
The Philistines gathered to fight against Israel. They had three thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and soldiers as numerous as sand on the seashore. They advanced and camped at Michmash, east of Beth-aven.
6 Les hommes d’Israël, se voyant dans une grande extrémité, car ils étaient serrés de près, se cachèrent dans les cavernes, dans les broussailles, dans les rochers, dans les trous et dans les citernes.
When the Israelite men realized the tough situation they were in, and that the army was taking a beating, they hid themselves in caves, holes, rocks, pits, and cisterns.
7 Des Hébreux passèrent aussi le Jourdain, pour aller au pays de Gad et de Galaad. Saül était encore à Galgala, et tout le peuple derrière lui tremblait.
Some of the Hebrews even crossed the Jordan into the territory of Gad and Gilead, but Saul stayed at Gilgal, and all the men with him were trembling with fear.
8 Il attendit sept jours, selon le terme fixé par Samuel. Mais Samuel n’arrivait pas à Galgala, et le peuple se dispersait loin de Saül.
Saul waited there seven days for the time that Samuel had said, but Samuel did not arrive at Gilgal, and the army started to desert him.
9 Alors Saül dit: « Amenez-moi l’holocauste et les sacrifices pacifiques. » Et il offrit l’holocauste.
So Saul ordered, “Bring the burnt offering and the friendship offerings to me,” and he presented the burnt offering.
10 Comme il achevait d’offrir l’holocauste, voici que Samuel arriva, et Saül sortit au-devant de lui pour le saluer.
Just as he finished presenting the burnt offering, he saw Samuel arrive. Saul went over to meet him and say hello.
11 Samuel lui dit: « Qu’as-tu fait? » Saül répondit: « Lorsque j’ai vu que le peuple se dispersait loin de moi, que tu n’arrivais pas au terme fixé et que les Philistins étaient assemblés à Machmas,
“What have you done?” Samuel asked. Saul replied, “Well I saw my men were deserting me, and you hadn't arrived when you said you would, and the Philistines were gathering at Michmash to attack.
12 je me suis dit: Maintenant, les Philistins vont descendre contre moi à Galgala, et je n’ai pas imploré Yahweh. Alors, me faisant violence, j’ai offert l’holocauste. »
I said to myself, ‘The Philistines are about to attack me at Gilgal, and I haven't asked the Lord for his help.’ So I felt I had to present the burnt offering myself.”
13 Samuel dit à Saül: « Tu as agi en insensé, tu n’as pas observé le commandement que Yahweh ton Dieu t’avait donné; car Yahweh aurait affermi pour toujours ton règne sur Israël.
“You've been really stupid,” Samuel told him. “You haven't kept the commands of the Lord your God. If you had, the Lord would have made your kingdom over Israel secure forever.
14 Mais maintenant, ton règne ne subsistera point. Yahweh s’est cherché un homme selon son cœur et Yahweh l’a destiné à être le chef de son peuple, parce que tu n’as pas observé ce que Yahweh t’avait ordonné. »
But now your kingdom won't last. The Lord has found for himself a man who thinks like him, and has chosen him as ruler over his people, because you haven't kept the commands of the Lord.”
15 Et Samuel se leva, et monta de Galgala à Gabaa de Benjamin. Saül passa en revue le peuple qui se trouvait avec lui: il y en avait environ six cents hommes.
Then Samuel left Gilgal. The rest of the soldiers followed Saul to meet the army, going from Gilgal to Geba in Benjamin. Saul counted the number of soldiers who were with him and there were about six hundred.
16 Saül, Jonathas, son fils, et le peuple qui se trouvait avec eux s’étaient postés à Gabée de Benjamin, et les Philistins campaient à Machmas.
Saul, his son Jonathan, and the soldiers with them were staying in Geba of Benjamin, while the Philistines were camped at Michmash.
17 L’armée de destruction sortit du camp des Philistins en trois corps: un corps prit le chemin d’Ephra, vers le pays de Sual;
Three groups of raiders left the Philistine camp to go and attack. One group went towards Ophrah in the land of Shual,
18 un autre corps prit le chemin de Beth-Horon; et le troisième corps, celui de la frontière qui domine la vallée de Seboïm, du côté du désert.
one towards Beth-horon, and one towards the border that looks down on the Valley of Zeboim by the wilderness.
19 On ne trouvait point de forgeron dans tout le pays d’Israël; car les Philistins avaient dit: « Que les Hébreux ne puissent plus fabriquer d’épées ou de lances! »
There wasn't a blacksmith to be found anywhere in Israel, because the Philistines had said, “So that the Hebrews don't make swords and spears.”
20 Et tout Israël descendait chez les Philistins pour aiguiser chacun son soc, son hoyau, sa hache ou sa charrue,
All the Israelites had to go to the Philistines to sharpen their iron plowshares, pickaxes, axes, and sickles.
21 en sorte que le tranchant des socs, des hoyaux, des tridents et des haches était souvent émoussé et les aiguillons non redressés.
The fee was two-thirds of a shekel for plowshares and pickaxes, and a third of a shekel for sharpening the axes and cattle prods.
22 Il arriva qu’au jour du combat, il ne se trouvait ni lance ni épée dans la main de tout le peuple qui était avec Saül et Jonathas; mais il s’en trouvait auprès de Saül et de Jonathas, son fils.
So when it came to the day of battle none of the soldiers with Saul and Jonathan had swords or spears—only Saul and his son Jonathan had such weapons.
23 Un poste des Philistins se rendit au passage de Machmas.
A Philistine garrison had taken control of the pass at Michmash.
