1 Achab rapporta à Jézabel tout ce qu'Elie avait fait, et comment il avait tué par l'épée tous les prophètes.
And Ahab told Jezebel, all that Elijah had done, —and withal, how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.
2 Et Jézabel envoya un messager à Elie pour lui dire: « Que les dieux me traitent dans toute leur rigueur, si demain à cette heure je n'ai pas fait de ta vie comme tu as fait de la vie de chacun d'eux? »
Then sent Jezebel a messenger unto Elijah, saying, —So, let the gods do, and, so, let them add, if, by this time to-morrow, I make not thy life as the life of one of them.
3 Elie, voyant cela, se leva et partit pour sauver sa vie. Il arriva à Bersabée, qui appartient à Juda, et y laissa son serviteur.
And, when he saw [that], he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, —and left his servant there.
4 Pour lui, il alla dans le désert l'espace d'une journée de marche; arrivé là, il s'assit sous un genêt et demanda pour lui la mort, en disant: « C'est assez! Maintenant, Yahweh, prends ma vie, car je ne suis pas meilleur que mes pères! »
But, he himself, went into the wilderness a day’s journey, and came and sat down under a certain shrub, —and asked for his life, that he might die, and said—Enough, now, O Yahweh! take away my life, for, no better, am, I, than, my fathers.
5 Il se coucha et s'endormit sous le genêt. Et voici qu'un ange le toucha et lui dit: « Lève-toi, mange. »
And, as he lay, and slept, under a certain shrub, lo! a messenger, touching him, who said to him—Rise, eat.
6 Il regarda, et voici qu'il y avait à son chevet un gâteau cuit sur des pierres chauffées et une cruche d'eau. Après avoir mangé et bu, il se recoucha.
So he looked about, and lo! at his head, a cake baked on hot stones, and a cruse of water, —and he did eat and drink, and then went back and lay down.
7 L'ange de Yahweh vint une seconde fois, le toucha et dit: « Lève-toi, mange, car le chemin est trop long pour toi. »
And the messenger of Yahweh came again a second time, and touched him, and said—Rise, eat, —because, too much for thee, is the journey.
8 Il se leva, mangea et but, et, avec la force que lui donna cette nourriture, il marcha quarante jours et quarante nuits jusqu'à la montagne de Dieu, à Horeb.
So he arose, and did eat and drink, —and journeyed, in the strength of that eating, forty days and forty nights, as far as the mountain of God—Horeb.
9 Là, il entra dans la caverne, et il y passa la nuit. Et voici que la parole de Yahweh lui fut adressée, et il lui dit: « Que fais-tu ici, Elie? »
And he entered, there, into a cave, and lodged there, —and lo! the word of Yahweh [came] unto him, and said to him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
10 Il répondit: « J'ai été plein de zèle pour Yahweh, le Dieu des armées; car les enfants d'Israël ont abandonné votre alliance, renversé vos autels, et tué par l'épée vos prophètes; je suis resté moi seul, et ils cherchent à m'ôter la vie. »
And he said—Very jealous, have I been, for Yahweh, God of hosts, because the sons of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thine altars, have they thrown down, thy prophets, also have they slain with the sword, —and, I alone, am left, and they have sought my life, to take it.
11 Yahweh dit: « Sors, et tiens-toi dans la montagne devant Yahweh, car voici que Yahweh va passer. » Et il y eut, devant Yahweh, un vent fort et violent qui déchirait les montagnes et brisait les rochers: Yahweh n'était pas dans le vent. Après le vent, il y eut un tremblement de terre: Yahweh n'était pas dans le tremblement de terre.
And he said—Go forth to-morrow, and stand in the mountain, before Yahweh. And lo! Yahweh, passing by, and a great and strong wind—rending the mountains, and breaking in pieces the crags, before Yahweh, Not, in the wind, was, Yahweh, —And, after the wind, an, earthquake, Not, in the earthquake, was, Yahweh;
12 Et après le tremblement de terre, un feu: Yahweh n'était pas dans le feu. Et après le feu, un murmure doux et léger.
And, after the earthquake, a, fire, Not, in the fire, was, Yahweh, —And, after the fire, the voice of a gentle whisper.
13 Quand Elie l'entendit, il s'enveloppa le visage de son manteau et, étant sorti, il se tint à l'entrée de la caverne. Et voici qu'une voix se fit entendre à lui, en disant: « Que fais-tu ici, Elie? »
And it came to pass, when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went forth, and stood at the entrance of the cave, —and lo! unto him, a voice; and it said—What doest thou here, Elijah?
14 Il répondit: « J'ai été plein de zèle pour Yahweh, le Dieu des armées; car les enfants d'Israël ont abandonné votre alliance, renversé vos autels et tué par l'épée vos prophètes; je suis resté, moi seul, et ils cherchent à m'ôter la vie! »
And he said—Very jealous, have I been, for Yahweh, God of hosts, because the sons of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thine altars, have they thrown down, thy prophets also, have they slain with the sword, —and, I alone, am left, and they rove sought my life, to take it.
15 Yahweh lui dit: « Va, reprenant ton chemin, au désert de Damas, et, quand tu seras arrivé, tu oindras Hazaël pour roi sur la Syrie;
And Yahweh said unto him, Go, return to thy way, towards the wilderness of Damascus, —and, when thou enterest, then shalt thou anoint Hazael to be king over Syria;
16 tu oindras Jéhu, fils de Namsi, pour roi sur Israël, et tu oindras Elisée, fils de Saphat, d'Abel-Méhula, pour prophète à ta place.
And, Jehu son of Minshi, shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel, —and, Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah, shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy stead:
17 Et celui qui échappera à l'épée de Hazaël, Jéhu le fera mourir; et celui qui échappera à l'épée de Jéhu, Elisée le fera mourir.
Then shall it come to pass, that—him that escapeth the sword of Hazael, shall, Jehu, slay, —and, him that escapeth the sword of Jehu, shall, Elisha, slay;
18 Mais je laisserai en Israël sept mille hommes, savoir tous ceux qui n'ont pas fléchi le genou devant Baal, tous ceux dont la bouche ne l'a point baisé. »
Yet will I leave remaining in Israel, seven thousand, —all knees which have not bowed to Baal, and all mouths which have not kissed to him.
19 Etant parti de là, Elie trouva Elisée, fils de Saphat, qui labourait; il y avait devant lui douze paires de bœufs, et il était avec la douzième. Elie s'approcha de lui, et il jeta sur lui son manteau.
So he departed from thence, and found Elisha son of Shaphat, as he was plowing, with twelve yoke of oxen before him, he being with the twelfth, —so Elijah crossed over unto him, and cast his mantle towards him;
20 Elisée, quittant les bœufs, courut après Elie et dit: « Permets que j'embrasse mon père et ma mère, et je te suivrai. » Elie lui répondit: « Va, retourne, car que t'ai-je fait!... »
and he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said—Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, that I may follow thee. And he said unto him, —Go, turn back, for what have I done to thee?
21 Elisée s'éloigna de lui et, ayant pris la paire de bœufs, il les égorgea; et avec le harnais des bœufs, il fit cuire leur chair et la donna à manger au peuple. Puis il se leva, suivit Elie et fut à son service.
So he turned back from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and sacrificed them, and, with the implements of the oxen, boiled their flesh, and gave unto the people, and they did eat, —then he arose, and followed Elijah, and ministered unto him.
