1 Corinthiens 14

1 Recherchez la charité. Aspirez néanmoins aux dons spirituels, mais surtout à celui de prophétie.

Cultivate love, and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but rather that you may prophesy.

2 En effet, celui qui parle en langue ne parle pas aux hommes, mais à Dieu, car personne ne le comprend, et c'est en esprit qu'il dit des mystères.

For he that speaks in an unknown tongue, speaks not to men, but to God; for no one understands him: but yet in spirit he speaks mysteries.

3 Celui qui prophétise au contraire, parle aux hommes, les édifie, les exhorte, les console.

But he that prophesies speaks to men so as to build them up, to exhort and comfort them.

4 Celui qui parle en langue s'édifie lui-même; celui qui prophétise édifie l'Eglise [de Dieu].

He that speaks in an unknown tongue, edifies himself; but he that prophesies, edifies the church.

5 Je désire que vous parliez tous en langues, mais encore plus que vous prophétisiez; car celui qui prophétise est plus grand que celui qui parle en langues, à moins que ce dernier n'interprète ce qu'il dit, pour que l'Eglise en reçoive de l'édification.

I am willing, indeed, that you should all speak in tongues, but rather that you should prophesy; for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, in order that the church may receive instruction.

6 Voyons, frères, de quelle utilité vous serais-je, si je venais à vous parlant en langues, et si je ne vous parle pas par révélation, ou par science, ou par prophétie, ou par doctrine?

Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, in what will I profit you, unless I speak to you by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophecy, or by teaching?

7 Si les objets inanimés qui rendent un son, comme une flûte ou une harpe, ne rendent pas des sons distincts, comment connaîtra-t-on ce qui est joué sur la flûte ou sur la harpe?

And even lifeless instruments, which produce sound, whether pipe or harp, unless they give a distinction in the notes, how shall that which is piped or harped be known?

8 Et si la trompette rend un son confus, qui se préparera au combat?

For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for battle?

9 De même vous, si vous ne faites pas entendre avec la langue une parole distincte, comment saura-t-on ce que vous dites? Vous parlerez en l'air.

So, also, unless you, with the tongue, utter words that are intelligible, how shall that which is spoken be known? for you will speak into the air.

10 Quelque nombreuses que puissent être dans le monde les diverses langues, il n'en est aucune qui consiste en sons inintelligibles.

There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without meaning.

11 Si donc j'ignore la valeur du son, je serai un barbare pour celui qui parle, et celui qui parle sera un barbare pour moi.

If, then, I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaks a barbarian; and he that speaks will be a barbarian to me.

12 De même vous aussi, puisque vous aspirez aux dons spirituels, que ce soit pour l'édification de l'Eglise que vous cherchiez à en avoir abondamment.

So, also, do you, since you greatly desire spiritual gifts, seek to excel to the building up of the church.

13 C'est pourquoi, que celui qui parle en langue prie pour obtenir le don d'interpréter.

For which reason, let him that speaks in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

14 Car si je prie en langue, mon esprit est en prière, mais mon intelligence demeure sans fruit.

For if I pray in an unknown tongue, the spirit which I have prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 Que faire donc? Je prierai avec l'esprit, mais je prierai aussi avec l'intelligence; je chanterai avec l'esprit, mais je chanterai aussi avec l'intelligence.

What, then, is it? I will pray with the spirit which is given to me, and I will pray with my understanding also. I will sing with the spirit that is given to me, and I will sing with my understanding also.

16 Autrement, si tu rends grâces avec l'esprit, comment celui qui est dans les rangs de l'homme du peuple répondra-t-il " Amen! " à ton action de grâces, puisqu'il ne sait pas ce que tu dis?

Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit that is given to you, how will he that occupies the place of the unlearned man say Amen, when you give thanks, since he understands not what you say?

17 Ton hymne d'action de grâces est sans doute fort beau; mais lui n'en est pas édifié.

For you give thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18 Je rends grâces à [mon] Dieu de ce que je parle en langues plus que vous tous;

I thank God that I speak in tongues more than you all.

19 mais, dans l'Eglise, j'aime mieux dire cinq paroles avec mon intelligence, afin d'instruire aussi les autres, que dix mille paroles en langue.

Yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may instruct others, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

20 Frères, ne soyez pas des enfants sous le rapport du jugement; mais faites-vous enfants sous le rapport de la malice, et, pour le jugement, soyez des hommes faits.

Brethren, be not children in understanding: yet, in malice, be childlike; but, in understanding, be full-grown men.

21 Il est écrit dans la Loi: " C'est par des hommes d'une autre langue et par des lèvres étrangères que je parlerai à ce peuple, et même ainsi ils ne m'écouteront pas, dit le Seigneur. "

In the law it is written: Through men of other tongues and other lips will I speak to this people; and not even thus will they hear me, says the Lord.

22 C'est donc que les langues sont un signe, non pour les croyants, mais pour les infidèles; la prophétie, au contraire, est un signe, non pour les infidèles, mais pour les croyants.

Therefore, tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to those who believe not: but prophecy is not for those who believe not, but for those who believe.

23 Si donc, l'Eglise entière se trouvant réunie en assemblée, tous parlent en langues, et qu'il survienne des hommes non initiés ou des infidèles, ne diront-ils pas que vous êtes des fous?

If, then, the whole church come together into the same place, and all speak in tongues, and there come in unlearned men, or unbelievers, will they not say that you are mad?

24 Mais si tous prophétisent, et qu'il survienne un infidèle ou un homme non initié, il est convaincu par tous, il est jugé par tous,

But if all prophesy, and there comes in an unbeliever, or an unlearned man, he is convinced by all, he is examined by all,

25 les secrets de son cœur sont dévoilés, de telle sorte que, tombant sur sa face, il adorera Dieu, et publiera que Dieu est vraiment au milieu de vous.

and the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God, and report that God is really among you.

26 Que faire donc, mes frères? Lorsque vous vous assemblez, tel d'entre vous a un cantique, tel une instruction, tel une révélation, tel un discours en langue, tel une interprétation, que tout se passe de manière à édifier.

What, then, is it, brethren? When you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has something to teach, has an unknown tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.

27 Si l'on parle en langue, que ce soient chaque fois deux ou trois au plus, chacun à son tour, et qu'il y ait un interprète;

If any speak in an unknown tongue, let two, or, at most, three, speak at each meeting, and in succession: and let one interpret.

28 s'il n'y a point d'interprète, qu'on se taise dans l'assemblée et qu'on se parle à soi-même et à Dieu.

But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church: but let him speak to himself, and to God.

29 Pour les prophètes, qu'il y en ait deux ou trois à parler, et que les autres jugent;

Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge:

30 et si un autre, qui est assis, a une révélation, que le premier se taise.

and if any thing be revealed to one who is sitting by, let the first be silent.

31 Car vous pouvez tous prophétiser l'un après l'autre, afin que tous soient instruits et que tous soient exhortés.

For you can all prophesy, one by one, that all may learn, and all may be encouraged;

32 Or les esprits des prophètes sont soumis aux prophètes,

and the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets;

33 car Dieu n'est pas un Dieu de désordre, mais de paix. Comme cela a eu lieu dans toutes les Eglises des saints,

for God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints.

34 que vos femmes se taisent dans les assemblées, car elles n'ont pas mission de parler; mais qu'elles soient soumises, comme le dit aussi la Loi.

Let your women keep silence in the assemblies; for they ire not permitted to speak; but they must be in subjection, as also says the law.

35 Si elles veulent s'instruire sur quelque point, qu'elles interrogent leurs maris à la maison; car il est malséant à une femme de parler dans une assemblée.

But if they wish to learn any thing, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is a shame for women to speak in an assembly.

36 Est-ce de chez vous que la parole de Dieu est sortie? ou est-ce à vous seuls qu'elle est parvenue?

Has the word of God come forth from you? or did it come to you only?

37 Si quelqu'un croit être prophète ou riche en dons spirituels, qu'il reconnaisse que ces choses que je vous ai écrites sont des commandements du Seigneur.

If any one has the reputation of being a prophet, or spiritual man, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.

38 Et s'il veut l'ignorer, qu'il l'ignore.

But if any one be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39 Ainsi donc, mes frères, aspirez au don de prophétie, et n'empêchez pas de parler en langue.

Wherefore, brethren, earnestly desire to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

40 Mais que tout se fasse avec bienséance et avec ordre.

Let all things be done with propriety, and in good order.
