Apocalypse 17
1 Puis l’un des sept anges qui portaient les sept coupes vint me parler en ces termes: « Viens, je te montrerai le jugement de la grande prostituée qui est assise sur les grandes eaux,
And there came one of the seven angels that had the seven bowls, and spake with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the judgment of the great harlot that sitteth upon many waters;
2 avec laquelle les rois de la terre se sont souillés, et qui a enivré les habitants de la terre du vin de son impudicité. »
with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and they that dwell in the earth were made drunken with the wine of her fornication.
3 Et il me transporta en esprit dans un désert. Et je vis une femme assise sur une bête écarlate, pleine de noms de blasphème, et ayant sept têtes et dix cornes.
And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness: and I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet-coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
4 Cette femme était vêtue de pourpre et d’écarlate; et richement parée d’or, de pierres précieuses et de perles; elle tenait à la main une coupe d’or, remplie d’abominations et des souillures de sa prostitution.
And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations, even the unclean things of her fornication,
5 Sur son front était un nom, nom mystérieux: « Babylone la grande, la mère des impudiques et des abominations de la terre. »
and upon her forehead a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
6 Je vis cette femme ivre du sang des saints et du sang des martyrs de Jésus; et, en la voyant, je fus saisi d’un grand étonnement.
And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I wondered with a great wonder.
7 Et l’ange me dit: « Pourquoi t’étonner? Moi je vais te dire le mystère de la femme et de la bête qui la porte, et qui a les sept têtes et les dix cornes.
And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou wonder? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and the ten horns.
8 La bête que tu as vue était et n’est plus; elle doit remonter de l’abîme, puis s’en aller à la perdition. Et les habitants de la terre, dont le nom n’est pas écrit dès la fondation du monde dans le livre de la vie, seront étonnés en voyant la bête, parce qu’elle était, qu’elle n’est plus, et qu’elle reparaîtra. The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and is about to come up out of the abyss, and to go into perdition. And they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, [they] whose name hath not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast, how that he was, and is not, and shall come. (Abyssos g12)
9 — C’est ici qu’il faut un esprit doué de sagesse. — Les sept têtes sont sept montagnes, sur lesquelles la femme est assise. Ce sont aussi sept rois:
Here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth:
10 Les cinq premiers sont tombés, l’un subsiste, l’autre n’est pas encore venu, et quand il sera venu, il doit demeurer peu de temps.
and they are seven kings; the five are fallen, the one is, the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a little while.
11 Et la bête qui était et qui n’est plus, en est elle-même un huitième et elle est des sept, et elle s’en va à la perdition.
And the beast that was, and is not, is himself also an eighth, and is of the seven; and he goeth into perdition.
12 Et les dix cornes que tu as vues sont dix rois qui n’ont pas encore reçu la royauté, mais qui recevront un pouvoir de roi pour une heure avec la bête.
And the ten horns that thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but they receive authority as kings, with the beast, for one hour.
13 Ceux-ci ont un seul et même dessein, et ils mettent au service de la bête leur puissance et leur autorité.
These have one mind, and they give their power and authority unto the beast.
14 Ils feront la guerre à l’Agneau, mais l’Agneau les vaincra, parce qu’il est Seigneur des seigneurs et Roi des rois, et ceux qui l’accompagnent sont les appelés, les élus et les fidèles. »
These shall war against the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them, for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings; and they [also shall overcome] that are with him, called and chosen and faithful.
15 Et il me dit: « Les eaux que tu as vues, au lieu où la prostituée est assise, ce sont des peuples, des foules, des nations et des langues.
And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the harlot sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
16 Et les dix cornes que tu as vues sur la bête haïront elles-mêmes la prostituée; elles la rendront désolée et nue; elles mangeront ses chairs et la consumeront par le feu.
And the ten horns which thou sawest, and the beast, these shall hate the harlot, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and shall burn her utterly with fire.
17 Car Dieu leur a mis au cœur d’exécuter son dessein, et de donner leur royauté à la bête, jusqu’à ce que les paroles de Dieu soient accomplies.
For God did put in their hearts to do his mind, and to come to one mind, and to give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God should be accomplished.
18 Et la femme que tu as vue, c’est la grande cité qui a la royauté sur les rois de la terre. »
And the woman whom thou sawest is the great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.
