Néhémie 4
1 Lorsque Sanaballat apprit que nous rebâtissons la muraille, il se mit en colère et fut très irrité. Il se moqua des juifs.
And it comes to pass, when Sanballat has heard that we are building the wall, that it is displeasing to him, and he is very angry and mocks at the Jews,
2 Il parla devant ses frères et devant les troupes de Samarie, et dit: « Qu’entreprennent les Juifs impuissants? Les laissera-t-on faire? Offriront-ils des sacrifices? Achèveront-ils en un jour? Feront-ils revivre les pierres ensevelies sous des monceaux de poussière et consumées par le feu? »
and says before his brothers and the force of Samaria, indeed, he says, “What [are] the weak Jews doing? Are they left to themselves? Do they sacrifice? Do they complete in a day? Do they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish—and they are burned?”
3 Et Tobie, l’Ammonite, qui était à côté de lui, dit: « Qu’ils bâtissent seulement! Si un renard s’élance, il renversera leur muraille de pierre. »
And Tobiah the Ammonite [is] by him and says, “Also, that which they are building—if a fox goes up, then it has broken down their stone wall.”
4 Ecoutez, ô notre Dieu, car nous sommes méprisés! Faites retomber leurs insultes sur leur tête, et livrez-les comme une proie dans un pays d’exil.
Hear, O our God, for we have been despised; and return their reproach on their own head, and give them for a spoil in a land of captivity;
5 Ne pardonnez pas leur iniquité et que leur péché ne soit pas effacé de devant votre face, car ils ont fait scandale devant ceux qui bâtissent.
and do not cover over their iniquity, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before You, for they have provoked [You] to anger in front of those building.
6 Nous rebâtîmes la muraille, et l’enceinte fut rétablie toute entière jusqu’à moitié de sa hauteur; car le peuple prit cœur à ce travail.
And we build the wall, and all the wall is joined—to its half, and the people have a heart to work.
7 Quand Sanaballat, Tobie, les Arabes, les Ammonites et les Azotiens, apprirent que la réparation des murs avançait et que les brèches commençaient à se fermer, ils furent très irrités.
And it comes to pass, when Sanballat has heard, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, that lengthening has gone up to the walls of Jerusalem, that the breeches have begun to be stopped, then it is very displeasing to them,
8 Ils se liguèrent tous ensemble pour venir attaquer Jérusalem et y causer du trouble.
and they conspire, all of them together, to come to fight against Jerusalem, and to do to it injury.
9 Nous priâmes notre Dieu et nous établîmes une garde contre eux, jour et nuit, pour nous protéger contre eux.
And we pray to our God, and appoint a watch against them, by day and by night, because of them.
10 Mais Juda disait: « Les forces manquent aux porteurs de fardeaux, et il y a quantité de décombres; nous ne pourrons pas bâtir la muraille. »
And Judah says, “The power of the burden-bearers has become feeble, and the rubbish [is] abundant, and we are not able to build on the wall.”
11 Et nos ennemis disaient: « Ils ne sauront rien, ils ne verront rien, jusqu’à ce que nous arrivions au milieu d’eux; nous les massacrerons et nous ferons cesser l’ouvrage. »
And our adversaries say, “They do not know, nor see, until we come into their midst, and have slain them, and caused the work to cease.”
12 Or, quand venaient les Juifs qui habitaient près d’eux, ils nous avertirent dix fois de tous les lieux d’où nos adversaires revenaient contre nous.
And it comes to pass, when the Jews have come who are dwelling near them, that they say to us ten times from all the places to where you return—[they are] against us.
13 Alors je plaçai aux endroits les plus bas, derrière la muraille, en des endroits découverts, je plaçai le peuple par familles, tous avec leurs épées, leurs lances et leurs arcs.
And I appoint at the lowest of the places, at the back of the wall, in the clear places, indeed, I appoint the people, by their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
14 Ayant regardé, je me levai et je dis aux grands, aux magistrats et au reste du peuple: « Ne craignez pas devant eux! Souvenez-vous du Seigneur, grand et redoutable, et combattez pour vos frères, pour vos fils et vos filles, pour vos femmes et pour vos maisons! »
And I see, and rise up, and say to the nobles, and to the prefects, and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them; remember the Lord, the great and the fearful, and fight for your brothers, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”
15 Quand nos ennemis apprirent que nous étions avertis, et que Dieu avait anéanti leur projet nous retournâmes tous à la muraille, chacun à son ouvrage.
And it comes to pass, when our enemies have heard that it has been known to us, and God frustrates their counsel, and we return, all of us, to the wall, each to his work;
16 Mais à partir de ce jour, la moitié de mes gens travaillait à l’œuvre, et l’autre moitié tenait des lances, des boucliers, des arcs et des cuirasses, et les chefs étaient derrière toute la maison de Juda.
indeed, it comes to pass, from that day, half of my servants are working in the business, and half of them are keeping hold of both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the heads [are] behind all the house of Judah.
17 Parmi ceux qui bâtissaient la muraille, les uns, ceux qui portaient les fardeaux et s’en chargeaient, travaillaient d’une main à l’œuvre, pendant que l’autre tenait une arme;
The builders on the wall, and the bearers of the burden, those loading, [each] with one of his hands is working in the business, and one is laying hold of the missile.
18 les autres, ceux qui bâtissaient, avaient chacun leur épée ceinte autour des reins, pendant qu’ils bâtissaient; celui qui sonnait de la trompette se tenait prés de moi.
And the builders [are] each with his sword, girded on his loins, and building, and he who is blowing with a horn [is] beside me.
19 Et je dis aux grands, aux magistrats et au reste du peuple: « L’ouvrage est considérable et sur une vaste étendue; nous sommes dispersés sur la muraille, éloignés les uns des autres.
And I say to the nobles, and to the prefects, and to the rest of the people, “The work is abundant, and large, and we are separated on the wall, far off from one another;
20 De quelque endroit que vous entendiez le son de la trompette, rassemblez-vous auprès de nous; notre Dieu combattra pour nous. »
in the place that you hear the voice of the horn there you are gathered to us; our God fights for us.”
21 Et nous travaillions à l’œuvre, la moitié d’entre nous tenant des lances depuis le lever de l’aurore jusqu’à l’apparition des étoiles.
And we are working in the business, and half of them are keeping hold of the spears, from the going up of the dawn until the coming forth of the stars.
22 Dans ce même temps, je dis encore au peuple: « Que chacun, avec son serviteur, passe la nuit dans Jérusalem, pour nous servir de garde pendant la nuit, et travailler pendant le jour. »
Also, at that time I said to the people, “Let each lodge with his servant in the midst of Jerusalem, and they have been a watch for us by night, and [for] the work by day”:
23 Mais ni moi, ni mes frères, ni mes gens, ni les hommes de garde qui me suivaient, ne quittions nos vêtements; chacun ne les ôtait que pour l’ablution.
and there are none—I, and my brothers, and my servants, the men of the watch who [are] after me—there are none of us putting off our garments, each [has] his vessel of water.
