Matthieu 11
1 Quand Jésus eut achevé de donner ses instructions à ses douze disciples, il partit de là pour enseigner et prêcher dans leurs villes.
And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
2 Jean, dans sa prison, ayant entendu parler des œuvres du Christ, envoya deux de ses disciples lui dire:
Now when John had heard in the prison of the works of the Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3 « Es-tu celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre? »
and said to him: Art thou he that was to come, or must we look for another?
4 Jésus leur répondit: « Allez, rapportez à Jean ce que vous entendez et ce que vous voyez:
And Jesus answered and said to them: Go and tell John what you hear and see.
5 Les aveugles voient, les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont guéris, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, les pauvres sont évangélisés.
The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear; the dead are raised, and the poor have the gospel preached to them;
6 Heureux celui pour qui je ne serai pas une occasion de chute! »
and blessed is he that shall find in me no cause of offense.
7 Comme ils s’en allaient, Jésus se mit à parler de Jean à la foule:
As these were going away, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
8 « Qu’êtes-vous allés voir au désert? Un roseau agité par le vent? Qu’êtes-vous donc aller voir? Un homme vêtu d’habits somptueux? Mais ceux qui portent des habits somptueux se trouvent dans les maisons des rois.
But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings houses.
9 Mais qu’êtes-vous allés voir? Un prophète? Oui, vous dis-je, et plus qu’un prophète.
But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.
10 Car c’est celui dont il est écrit: Voici que j’envoie mon messager devant vous, pour vous précéder et vous préparer la voie.
For this is he of whom it is written: Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.
11 En vérité, je vous le dis, parmi les enfants des femmes, il n’en a pas paru de plus grand que Jean-Baptiste; toutefois le plus petit dans le royaume des cieux est plus grand que lui.
Verily, I say to you, Among those born of women, there has not risen a greater than John the Immerser. But the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 Depuis les jours de Jean-Baptiste jusqu’à présent, le royaume des cieux est emporté de force, et les violents s’en emparent.
From the days of John the Immerser till now, the kingdom of heaven is taken by violence, and men of violence seize upon it eagerly.
13 Car tous les Prophètes et la Loi ont prophétisé jusqu’à Jean.
For all the prophets and the law prophesied till John;
14 Et si vous voulez le comprendre, lui-même est Élie qui doit venir.
and if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah that was to come.
15 Que celui qui a des oreilles entende! »
He that has ears to hear, let him hear.
16 « A qui comparerai-je cette génération? Elle ressemble à des enfants assis dans la place publique, et qui crient à leurs compagnons:
But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the markets, and calling to their companions,
17 Nous avons joué de la flûte, et vous n’avez pas dansé; nous avons chanté une lamentation, et vous n’avez pas frappé votre poitrine.
and saying: We have played on the pipe for you, and you have not danced; we have wailed for you, and you have not lamented.
18 Jean est venu ne mangeant ni ne buvant, et ils disent: Il est possédé du démon;
For John came, neither eating nor drinking, and they say: He has a demon.
19 le Fils de l’homme est venu mangeant et buvant, et ils disent: C’est un homme de bonne chère et un buveur de vin, un ami des publicains et des gens de mauvaise vie. Mais la Sagesse a été justifiée par ses enfants. »
The Son of man has come eating and drinking, and they say: Behold, a glutton, and a drinker of wine, a friend of publicans and sinners. Yet wisdom is vindicated by her children.
20 Alors Jésus se mit à reprocher aux villes où il avait opéré le plus grand nombre de ses miracles, de n’avoir pas fait pénitence.
Then he began to reprove the cities in which most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent.
21 « Malheur à toi, Corozaïn! Malheur à toi, Bethsaïde! Car si les miracles qui ont été faits au milieu de vous, avaient été faits dans Tyr et dans Sidon, il y a longtemps qu’elles auraient fait pénitence sous le cilice et la cendre.
Alas for thee, Chorazin! alas for thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works which have been clone in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 Oui, je vous le dis, il y aura, au jour du jugement, moins de rigueur pour Tyr et pour Sidon, que pour vous.
But I say to you, It will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon, in the day of judgment, than for you.
23 Et toi, Capharnaüm, qui t’élèves jusqu’au ciel, tu seras abaissée jusqu’aux enfers; car si les miracles qui ont été faits dans tes murs, avaient été faits dans Sodome, elle serait restée debout jusqu’à ce jour. (Hadēs g86)
And thou, Capernaum, that hast been exalted to heaven, shalt be brought down to hades. For if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom, it would have remained till this day. (Hadēs g86)
24 Oui, je te le dis, il y aura, au jour du jugement, moins de rigueur pour le pays de Sodome que pour toi. »
But I say to you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom, in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25 En ce même temps, Jésus dit encore: « Je te bénis, Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, de ce que tu as caché ces choses aux sages et aux intelligents, et les as révélées aux petits.
At that time Jesus answered and said: I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to babes.
26 Oui, Père, je te bénis de ce qu’il t’a plu ainsi.
Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 Toutes choses m’ont été données par mon Père; personne ne connaît le Fils, si ce n’est le Père, et personne ne connaît le Père, si ce n’est le Fils, et celui à qui le Fils a voulu le révéler.
All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son, but the Father; nor does any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.
28 Venez à moi, vous tous qui êtes fatigués et ployez sous le fardeau, et je vous soulagerai.
Come to me, all you that are weary, and heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 Prenez sur vous mon joug, et recevez mes leçons, car je suis doux et humble de cœur; et vous trouverez le repos de vos âmes.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.
30 Car mon joug est doux et mon fardeau léger. »
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
