Juges 10
1 Après Abimélek, Thola, fils de Phua, fils de Dodo, homme d’Issachar, se leva pour délivrer Israël; il demeurait à Samir, dans la montagne d’Ephraïm.
After Abimelech, a leader rose up in Israel, Tola, the son of Puah, the paternal uncle of Abimelech, a man of Issachar, who lived in Shamir on mount Ephraim.
2 Il fut juge en Israël pendant vingt-trois ans; puis il mourut et fut enterré à Samir.
And he judged Israel for twenty-three years, and he died and was buried at Shamir.
3 Après lui se leva Jaïr, de Galaad, qui jugea Israël pendant vingt-deux ans.
After him succeeded Jair, a Gileadite, who judged Israel for twenty-two years,
4 Il avait trente fils, qui montaient trente ânons, et qui possédaient trente villes appelées encore aujourd’hui Bourgs de Jaïr, et situées dans le pays de Galaad.
having thirty sons sitting upon thirty young donkeys, and who were leaders of thirty cities, which from his name were called Havvoth Jair, that is, the towns of Jair, even to the present day, in the land of Gilead.
5 Et Jaïr mourut, et il fut enterré à Camon.
And Jair died, and he was buried in the place which is called Kamon.
6 Les enfants d’Israël firent encore ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahweh; ils servirent les Baals et les Astartés, les dieux de Syrie, les dieux de Sidon, les dieux de Moab, les dieux des fils d’Ammon et les dieux des Philistins, et ils abandonnèrent Yahweh et ne le servirent plus.
But the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, joining new sins to old, and they served idols, the Baals and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria and Sidon, and of Moab and the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines. And they abandoned the Lord, and they did not worship him.
7 La colère de Yahweh s’enflamma contre Israël, et il les vendit entre les mains des Philistins et entre les mains des fils d’Ammon.
And the Lord, becoming angry against them, delivered them into the hands of the Philistines and the sons of Ammon.
8 Ces derniers opprimèrent et écrasèrent les enfants d’Israël en cette année-là; et cette oppression dura dix-huit ans pour tous les enfants d’Israël qui habitaient de l’autre côté du Jourdain, dans le pays des Amorrhéens en Galaad.
And they were afflicted and vehemently oppressed for eighteen years, all who were living beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorite, which is in Gilead,
9 Les fils d’Ammon passèrent le Jourdain pour combattre aussi Juda, Benjamin et la maison d’Ephraïm; et Israël fut réduit à une grande détresse.
to such a great extent that the sons of Ammon, crossing over the Jordan, laid waste to Judah and Benjamin and Ephraim. And Israel was exceedingly afflicted.
10 Les enfants d’Israël crièrent vers Yahweh, en disant: « Nous avons péché contre vous, car nous avons abandonné notre Dieu et nous avons servi les Baals. »
And crying out to the Lord, they said: “We have sinned against you. For we have forsaken the Lord our God, and we have served the Baals.”
11 Yahweh dit aux enfants d’Israël: « Est-ce que je ne vous ai pas délivrés des Egyptiens, des Amorrhéens, des fils d’Ammon, des Philistins?
And the Lord said to them: “Did not the Egyptians, and the Amorites, and the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines,
12 Et lorsque les Sidoniens, Amalec et Maon vous ont opprimés, et que vous avez crié vers moi, ne vous ai-je pas sauvés de leurs mains?
and also the Sidonians, and Amalek, and Canaan, oppress you, and so you cried out to me, and I rescued you from their hand?
13 Mais vous, vous m’avez abandonné et vous avez servi d’autres dieux; c’est pourquoi je ne vous délivrerai plus.
And yet you have forsaken me, and you have worshipped foreign gods. For this reason, I will not continue to free you any more.
14 Allez, invoquez les dieux que vous vous êtes choisis; qu’ils vous délivrent au temps de votre détresse! »
Go, and call upon the gods whom you have chosen. Let them free you in the time of anguish.”
15 Les enfants d’Israël dirent à Yahweh: « Nous avons péché, traitez-nous tous comme il vous semblera bon. Seulement daignez nous délivrer en ce jour. »
And the sons of Israel said to the Lord: “We have sinned. You may repay us in whatever way pleases you. Yet free us now.”
16 Et ils ôtèrent du milieu d’eux les dieux étrangers, et ils servirent Yahweh, et son âme ne put supporter les souffrances d’Israël.
And saying these things, they cast out all the idols of the foreign gods from their regions, and they served the Lord God. And he was touched by their miseries.
17 Les fils d’Ammon se rassemblèrent et campèrent en Galaad, et les enfants d’Israël se réunirent et campèrent à Maspha.
And then the sons of Ammon, shouting out together, pitched their tents in Gilead. And the sons of Israel gathered together against them, and they made camp at Mizpah.
18 Le peuple, les chefs de Galaad se dirent les uns aux autres: « Quel est l’homme qui commencera l’attaque contre les fils d’Ammon? Il deviendra chef de tous les habitants de Galaad. »
And the leaders of Gilead said to one another, “Whoever among us will be the first to begin to contend against the sons of Ammon, he shall be the leader of the people of Gilead.”
