Josué 4
1 Lorsque toute la nation eut achevé de passer le Jourdain, Yahweh dit à Josué:
And it came to pass, when all the nation had made an end of passing over the Jordan, that Yahweh slake unto Joshua, saying:
2 « Prenez douze hommes parmi le peuple, un homme par tribu,
Take unto you, from among the people, twelve men, one man severally from each tribe;
3 et donnez-leur cet ordre: De ce lieu-ci, du milieu du Jourdain, de l’endroit où les prêtres se sont tenus de pied ferme, prenez douze pierres, transportez-les avec vous et déposez-les dans le lieu où vous camperez cette nuit. »
and command ye them, saying, Take you up from hence, out of the midst of the Jordan, from the place where stood the feet of the priests with firm footing, twelve stones; —and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging-place where ye shall lodge, tonight.
4 Josué appela les douze hommes qu’il avait choisis parmi les enfants d’Israël, un homme par tribu,
So Joshua called unto the twelve men whom he had made ready, from among the sons of Israel, —one man severally out of each tribe;
5 et il leur dit: « Passez devant l’arche de Yahweh, votre Dieu, au milieu du Jourdain, et que chacun de vous prenne une pierre sur son épaule, selon le nombre des tribus des enfants d’Israël,
and Joshua said unto them: Pass ye over, before the ark of Yahweh your God, into the midst of the Jordan, —and lift ye up, each man one stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel:
6 afin que ce soit un signe au milieu de vous. Lorsque vos enfants vous demanderont un jour: Que signifient pour vous ces pierres?
that this may be a sign in your midst, —for your sons will ask in time to come, saying, What mean these stones to you?
7 Vous leur direz: Les eaux du Jourdain ont été coupées devant l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh; lorsqu’elle passa le Jourdain, les eaux du Jourdain furent coupées. Et ces pierres seront à jamais un mémorial pour les enfants d’Israël. »
Then shall ye say unto them—That the waters of the Jordan, were cut off, from before the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, when it passed into the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan, were cut off. So shall these stones become a memorial unto the sons of Israel, unto times age-abiding.
8 Les enfants d’Israël firent comme Josué avait ordonné. Ils prirent douze pierres du milieu du Jourdain, comme Yahweh l’avait dit à Josué, selon le nombre des tribus des enfants d’Israël, et, les ayant emportées avec eux au lieu où ils devaient passer la nuit, ils les y déposèrent.
And the sons of Israel did so, as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, as spake Yahweh unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel, —and carried them with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.
9 Josué dressa douze pierres au milieu du Jourdain, à la place où s’étaient arrêtés les pieds des prêtres qui portaient l’arche de l’alliance; et elles y sont restées jusqu’à ce jour.
Twelve stones also, did Joshua set up in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where stood the feet of the priests who were bearing the ark of the covenant, —and they have remained there until this day.
10 Les prêtres qui portaient l’arche se tinrent au milieu du Jourdain jusqu’à l’entier accomplissement de ce que Yahweh avait ordonné à Josué de dire au peuple, selon tout ce que Moïse avait prescrit à Josué; et le peuple se hâta de passer.
Now, the priests who were bearing the ark, continued standing in the midst of the Jordan, until everything was finished which Yahweh commanded Joshua, to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua, —the people therefore hasted, and passed over.
11 Lorsque tout le peuple eut achevé de passer, l’arche de Yahweh et les prêtres passèrent devant le peuple.
And so it was, as soon as all the people had made an end of passing over, —then passed over the ark of Yahweh, and the priests, in presence of the people.
12 Les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et la demi-tribu de Manassé passèrent en armes devant les enfants d’Israël, comme Moïse le leur avait dit.
Also the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh, passed over, armed, before the sons of Israel, —as Moses had spoken unto them:
13 Environ quarante mille hommes, armés pour le combat, passèrent devant Yahweh dans les plaines de Jéricho.
about forty thousand, equipped for the war, passed over before Yahweh, to battle, into the waste plains of Jericho.
14 En ce jour-là, Yahweh éleva Josué aux yeux de tout Israël, et ils le craignirent, comme ils avaient craint Moïse, tous les jours de sa vie.
On that day, did Yahweh magnify Joshua in the eyes of all Israel, —and they revered him, as they revered Moses, all the days of his life.
15 Yahweh parla à Josué en disant:
Then spake Yahweh unto Joshua, saying:
16 « Ordonne aux prêtres qui portent l’arche du témoignage de sortir du Jourdain. »
Command the priests who are bearing the ark of testimony, —that they come up out of the Jordan.
17 Et Josué donna cet ordre aux prêtres: « Sortez du Jourdain. »
So Joshua commanded the priests, saying, —Come ye up out of the Jordan.
18 Lorsque les prêtres qui portaient l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh furent sortis du milieu du Jourdain, et que la plante de leur pied se posa sur la terre sèche, les eaux du fleuve retournèrent à leur place et se répandirent comme auparavant par-dessus toutes ses rives.
And it came to pass, when the priests who were bearing the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came up out of the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the feet of the priests were withdrawn unto the dry ground, then returned the waters of the Jordan unto their place, and went, as before, over all his banks.
19 Le peuple sortit du Jourdain le dixième jour du premier mois, et il campa à Galgala à l’extrémité orientale du territoire de Jéricho.
So, the people, came up out of the Jordan, on the tenth of the first month, —and encamped in Gilgal, at the eastern end of Jericho.
20 Josué dressa à Galgala les douze pierres qu’ils avaient prises du Jourdain,
And, these twelve stones which they took out of the Jordan, did Joshua set up, in Gilgal.
21 et il dit aux enfants d’Israël: « Lorsque vos enfants demanderont un jour à leurs pères: Que signifient ces pierres?
Then spake he unto the sons of Israel, saying, —When your sons shall ask, in time to come, of their fathers, saying, —What mean these stones?
22 Vous en instruirez vos enfants, en disant: Israël a passé ce Jourdain à sec.
then shall ye let your sons know, saying, —On dry ground, came Israel over this Jordan;
23 Car Yahweh, votre Dieu, a mis à sec devant vous les eaux du Jourdain jusqu’à ce que vous eussiez passé, comme Yahweh, votre Dieu, l’avait fait à la mer Rouge, qu’il mit à sec devant nous jusqu’à ce que nous eussions passé:
in that Yahweh your God dried up the waters of the Jordan, from before you, until ye had passed over, —as Yahweh your God had done unto the Red Sea, which he dried up from before us, until we had passed over:
24 afin que tous les peuples de la terre apprennent que la main de Yahweh est puissante, et afin que vous ayez toujours la crainte de Yahweh, votre Dieu. »
that all the peoples of the earth might know the hand of Yahweh, that, firm, it is; that they might revere Yahweh your God, all the days.
