Jean 1
1 Au commencement était le Verbe, et le Verbe était en Dieu, et le Verbe était Dieu.
In the beginning the Word already was. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 Il était au commencement en Dieu.
In the beginning he was with God.
3 Tout par lui a été fait, et sans lui n’a été fait rien de ce qui existe.
Everything came into being through him; nothing came into being without him.
4 En lui était la vie, et la vie était la lumière des hommes,
In him was life, the life that was the light of everyone.
5 Et la lumière luit dans les ténèbres, et les ténèbres ne l’ont pas reçue.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not extinguished it.
6 Il y eut un homme, envoyé de Dieu; son nom était Jean.
God sent a man named John.
7 Celui-ci vint en témoignage, pour rendre témoignage à la lumière, afin que tous crussent par lui:
He came as a witness to explain about the light so that everyone might believe through him.
8 non que celui-ci fût la lumière, mais il avait à rendre témoignage à la lumière.
He himself was not the light, but he came to witness to the light.
9 La lumière, la vraie, celle qui éclaire tout homme, venait dans le monde.
The true light was coming into the world to give light to everyone.
10 Il (le Verbe) était dans le monde, et le monde par lui a été fait, et le monde ne l’a pas connu.
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world didn't know who he was.
11 Il vint chez lui, et les siens ne l’ont pas reçu.
He came to his own people, but they didn't accept him.
12 Mais quant à tous ceux qui l’ont reçu, Il leur a donné le pouvoir de devenir enfants de Dieu, à ceux qui croient en son nom,
But to all those who accepted him and trusted in him, he gave the right to become God's children.
13 Qui non du sang, ni de la volonté de la chair, ni de la volonté de l’homme, mais de Dieu sont nés.
These are the children born not in the usual way, not as the result of human desire or a father's decision, but born of God.
14 Et le Verbe s’est fait chair, et il a habité parmi nous, (et nous avons vu sa gloire, gloire comme celle qu’un fils unique tient de son Père) tout plein de grâce et de vérité.
The Word became human and lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son, full of grace and truth.
15 Jean lui rend témoignage, et s’écrie en ces termes: « Voici celui dont je disais: Celui qui vient après moi, est passé devant moi, parce qu’il était avant moi. »
John gave his testimony about him, shouting out to the people, “This is the one I was telling you about when I said, ‘The one who is coming after me is more important than me, for before I ever existed he already was.’”
16 Et c’est de sa plénitude, que nous avons tous reçu, et grâce sur grâce;
We have all been recipients of his generous nature, one gracious gift after another.
17 parce que la loi a été donnée par Moïse, la grâce et la vérité sont venues par Jésus-Christ.
The law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 Dieu, personne ne le vit jamais: le Fils unique, qui est dans le sein du Père, c’est lui qui l’a fait connaître.
While no one has ever seen God, God the one and only, who is close to the Father, has shown us what God is like.
19 Et voici le témoignage que rendit Jean, lorsque les Juifs envoyèrent de Jérusalem des prêtres et des lévites pour lui demander: « Qui es-tu? »
This is what John publicly stated when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 Il déclara, et ne le nia pas; il déclara: « Je ne suis pas le Christ. »
John declared plainly and clearly without hesitation, “I am not the Messiah.”
21 Et ils lui demandèrent: « Quoi donc! Es-tu Élie? » Il dit: « Je ne le suis pas — Es-tu le prophète? » Il répondit: « Non. —
“So then, who are you?” they asked. “Elijah?” “No, I'm not,” he answered. “Are you the Prophet?” “No,” he replied.
22 Qui es-tu donc, lui dirent-ils, afin que nous donnions une réponse à ceux qui nous ont envoyés. Que dis-tu de toi-même? »
“Well, who are you, then?” they asked. “We have to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 Il répondit: « Je suis la voix de celui qui crie dans le désert: Aplanissez le chemin du Seigneur, comme l’a dit le prophète Isaïe. »
“I am a voice calling in the desert, ‘Make the Lord's way straight!’” he said, using the words of the prophet Isaiah.
24 Or ceux qu’on lui avait envoyés étaient des Pharisiens.
The priests and Levites sent by the Pharisees
25 Et ils l’interrogèrent, et lui dirent: « Pourquoi donc baptises-tu, si tu n’es ni le Christ, ni Élie, ni le Prophète? »
asked him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you're not the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?”
26 Jean leur répondit: « Moi je baptise dans l’eau; mais au milieu de vous il y a quelqu’un que vous ne connaissez pas,
John replied, “I baptize with water, but standing among you is someone you don't know.
27 c’est celui qui vient après moi; je ne suis pas digne de délier la courroie de sa chaussure. »
He is coming after me, but I am not even worthy to untie his sandals.”
28 Cela se passait à Béthanie, au-delà du Jourdain, où Jean baptisait.
This all happened in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 Le lendemain, Jean vit Jésus qui venait vers lui, et il dit: « Voici l’agneau de Dieu, voici celui qui ôte le péché du monde.
The next day John saw Jesus approaching him, and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30 C’est de lui que j’ai dit: un homme vient après moi, qui est passé devant moi, parce qu’il était avant moi.
This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man who is coming after me is more important than me, for before I ever existed he already was.’
31 Et moi, je ne le connaissais pas, mais c’est afin qu’il fût manifesté à Israël, que je suis venu baptiser dans l’eau. »
I didn't know myself who he was, but I came baptizing with water so that he could be revealed to Israel.”
32 Et Jean rendit témoignage en disant: « J’ai vu l’Esprit descendre du ciel comme une colombe, et il s’est reposé sur lui.
John gave his evidence about him, saying, “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove and rest upon him.
33 Et moi, je ne le connaissais pas; mais celui qui m’a envoyé baptiser dans l’eau m’a dit: Celui sur qui tu verras l’Esprit descendre et se reposer, c’est lui qui baptise dans l’Esprit-Saint.
I wouldn't have known him except he who sent me to baptize with water had told me, ‘The one you see the Spirit descend to and rest upon, he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’
34 Et moi j’ai vu et j’ai rendu témoignage que celui-là est le Fils de Dieu. »
I saw it happen and I declare that this is the Son of God.”
35 Le lendemain, Jean se trouvait encore là, avec deux de ses disciples.
The next day John was standing there with two of his disciples.
36 Et ayant regardé Jésus qui passait, il dit: « Voici l’Agneau de Dieu. »
He saw Jesus passing by, and said, “Look! This is the Lamb of God!”
37 Les deux disciples l’entendirent parler, et ils suivirent Jésus.
When the two disciples heard what he said they went and followed Jesus.
38 Jésus s’étant retourné, et voyant qu’ils le suivaient, leur dit: « Que cherchez-vous? » Ils lui répondirent: « Rabbi (ce qui signifie Maître), où demeures-tu? »
Jesus turned round and saw them following him. “What are you looking for?” he asked them. “Rabbi (which means ‘Teacher’), where are you staying?” they asked in reply.
39 Il leur dit: « Venez et vous verrez. » Ils allèrent, et virent où il demeurait, et ils restèrent auprès de lui ce jour-là. Or, c’était environ la dixième heure.
“Come and see,” he told them. So they went with him and saw where he was staying. It was about four p.m., and they spent the rest of the day with him.
40 Or, André, le frère de Simon-Pierre, était l’un des deux qui avaient entendu la parole de Jean, et qui avaient suivi Jésus.
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of these two disciples who had heard what John said and followed Jesus.
41 Il rencontra d’abord son frère Simon, et lui dit: « Nous avons trouvé le Messie (ce qui se traduit Christ). »
He went at once to find his brother Simon and told him, “We've found the Messiah!” (which means “Christ”).
42 Et il l’amena à Jésus. Jésus, l’ayant regardé dit: « Toi, tu es Simon, fils de Jean; tu seras appelé Céphas (ce qui se traduit Pierre). »
He took him to Jesus. Looking directly at Simon, Jesus said, “You are Simon, son of John. But now you will be called Cephas,” (which means “Peter”).
43 Le jour suivant, Jésus résolut d’aller en Galilée. Et il rencontra Philippe. Et Jésus lui dit: « Suis-moi. »
The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. Jesus found Philip there, and told him, “Follow me.”
44 Philippe était de Bethsaïde, la ville d’André et de Pierre.
Philip was from Bethsaida, the same town that Andrew and Peter came from.
45 Philippe rencontra Nathanaël et lui dit: « Nous avons trouvé celui dont Moïse a écrit dans la Loi, ainsi que les Prophètes: c’est Jésus, fils de Joseph de Nazareth. »
Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We've found the one that Moses wrote about in the law and that the prophets did too—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
46 Nathanaël lui répondit: « Peut-il sortir de Nazareth quelque chose de bon? » Philippe lui dit: « Viens et vois. »
“From Nazareth? Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael wondered. “Just come and see,” Philip replied.
47 Jésus vit venir vers lui Nathanaël, et dit en parlant de lui: « Voici vraiment un Israélite, en qui il n’y a nul artifice. »
As Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said about him, “Look, here's a true Israelite! There's nothing false about him.”
48 Nathanaël lui dit: « D’où me connais-tu? » Jésus repartit et lui dit: « Avant que Philippe t’appelât, lorsque tu étais sous le figuier, je t’ai vu. »
“How do you know who I am?” Nathanael asked. “I saw you there under the fig tree, before Philip called you,” Jesus replied.
49 Nathanaël lui répondit: « Rabbi, tu es le Fils de Dieu, tu es le Roi d’Israël. »
“Rabbi, you are the Son of God, the king of Israel!” Nathaniel exclaimed.
50 Jésus lui repartit: « Parce que je t’ai dit: Je t’ai vu sous le figuier, tu crois! Tu verras de plus grandes choses que celle-là. »
“You believe this just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree?” Jesus replied. “You'll get to see much more than that!”
51 Et il ajouta: « En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, vous verrez désormais le ciel ouvert, et les anges de Dieu montant et descendant sur le Fils de l’homme. »
Then Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open, and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of man.”
