1 Or, il y avait parmi les Pharisiens un homme nommé Nicodème, un des principaux parmi les Juifs.
Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2 Il vint de nuit trouver Jésus, et lui dit: « Maître, nous savons que tu es venu de la part de Dieu, comme docteur, car personne ne saurait faire les miracles que tu fais, si Dieu n’est pas avec lui. »
The same came unto him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these signs that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 Jésus lui répondit: « En vérité, en vérité, je te le dis, nul, s’il ne naît de nouveau, ne peut voir le royaume de Dieu. »
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodème lui dit: « Comment un homme, quand il est déjà vieux, peut-il naître? Peut-il entrer une seconde fois dans le sein de sa mère, et naître de nouveau? »
Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
5 Jésus répondit: « En vérité, en vérité, je te le dis, nul, s’il ne renaît de l’eau et de l’Esprit, ne peut entrer dans le royaume de Dieu.
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 Car ce qui est né de la chair est chair, et ce qui est né de l’Esprit est esprit.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Ne t’étonne pas de ce que je t’ai dit: Il faut que vous naissiez de nouveau.
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born anew.
8 Le vent souffle où il veut et tu entends sa voix; mais tu ne sais d’où il vient, ni où il va: ainsi en est-il de quiconque est né de l’Esprit. »
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the voice thereof, but knowest not whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9 Nicodème lui répondit: « Comment cela se peut-il faire? »
Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
10 Jésus lui dit: « Tu es le docteur d’Israël, et tu ignores ces choses!
Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou the teacher of Israel, and understandest not these things?
11 En vérité, en vérité, je te le dis, nous disons ce que nous savons, et nous attestons ce que nous avons vu, mais vous ne recevez pas notre témoignage.
Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and bear witness of that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12 Si vous ne croyez pas quand je vous parle des choses qui sont sur la terre, comment croirez-vous si je viens à vous parler de celles qui sont dans le ciel?
If I told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you heavenly things?
13 Et nul n’est monté au ciel si ce n’est celui qui est descendu du ciel, le Fils de l’homme qui est dans le ciel.
And no man hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended out of heaven, [even] the Son of man, which is in heaven.
14 Comme Moïse a élevé le serpent dans le désert, il faut de même que le Fils de l’homme soit élevé,
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 Afin que tout homme qui croit en lui [ne périsse pas, mais qu’il] ait la vie éternelle. (aiōnios g166)
that whosoever believeth may in him have eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
16 En effet, Dieu a tellement aimé le monde, qu’il a donné son Fils unique, afin que quiconque croit en lui ne périsse pas mais ait la vie éternelle. (aiōnios g166)
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
17 Car Dieu n’a pas envoyé le Fils dans le monde pour juger le monde, mais pour que le monde soit sauvé par lui.
For God sent not the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through him.
18 Celui qui croit en lui n’est pas jugé; mais celui qui ne croit pas est déjà jugé, parce qu’il n’a pas cru au nom du Fils unique de Dieu.
He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 Or, voici quel est le jugement: c’est que la lumière est venue dans le monde, et que les hommes ont mieux aimé les ténèbres que la lumière, parce que leurs œuvres étaient mauvaises.
And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil.
20 Car quiconque fait le mal, hait la lumière, de peur que ses œuvres ne soient blâmées.
For every one that doeth ill hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.
21 Mais celui qui accomplit la vérité, vient à la lumière, de sorte que ses œuvres soient manifestées, parce qu’elles sont faites en Dieu.
But he that doeth the truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, that they have been wrought in God.
22 Après cela, Jésus se rendit avec ses disciples au pays de Judée, et il y séjourna avec eux, et il baptisait.
After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
23 Jean aussi baptisait à Ennon, près de Salim, parce qu’il y avait là beaucoup d’eau, et l’on venait et l’on était baptisé,
And John also was baptizing in AEnon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
24 car Jean n’avait pas encore été jeté en prison.
For John was not yet cast into prison.
25 Or, il s’éleva une discussion entre les disciples de Jean et un Juif touchant la purification.
There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about purifying.
26 Et ils vinrent trouver Jean, et lui dirent: « Maître, celui qui était avec toi au delà du Jourdain, et à qui tu as rendu témoignage, le voilà qui baptise, et tous vont à lui. »
And they came unto John, and said to him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou hast borne witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.
27 Jean répondit: « Un homme ne peut prendre que ce qui lui a été donné du ciel.
John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it have been given him from heaven.
28 Vous m’êtes vous-mêmes témoins que j’ai dit: « Je ne suis pas le Christ, mais j’ai été envoyé devant lui. »
Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am sent before him.
29 Celui qui a l’épouse est l’époux; mais l’ami de l’époux, qui se tient là et qui l’écoute, est ravi de joie à la voix de l’époux. Or cette joie qui est la mienne, elle est pleinement réalisée.
He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
30 Il faut qu’il croisse et que je diminue.
He must increase, but I must decrease.
31 Celui qui vient d’en haut est au-dessus de tous; celui qui est de la terre est terrestre, et son langage aussi. Celui qui vient du ciel est au-dessus de tous;
He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is of the earth, and of the earth he speaketh: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
32 et ce qu’il a vu et entendu, il l’atteste; mais personne ne reçoit son témoignage.
What he hath seen and heard, of that he beareth witness; and no man receiveth his witness.
33 Celui qui reçoit son témoignage, certifie que Dieu est véridique.
He that hath received his witness hath set his seal to [this], that God is true.
34 Car celui que Dieu a envoyé dit les paroles de Dieu, parce que [Dieu] ne [lui] donne pas l’Esprit avec mesure.
For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for he giveth not the Spirit by measure.
35 Le Père aime le Fils, et il lui a tout remis entre les mains.
The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
36 Celui qui croit au Fils a la vie éternelle; mais celui qui ne croit pas au Fils ne verra pas la vie; mais la colère de Dieu demeure sur lui. » (aiōnios g166)
He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him. (aiōnios g166)
