Hébreux 12
1 Donc, nous aussi, puisque nous sommes environnés d’une si grande nuée de témoins, rejetons tout ce qui nous appesantit et le péché qui nous enveloppe, et courons avec persévérance dans la carrière qui nous est ouverte,
Wherefore, since we also have so great a cloud of witnesses lying round about us, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin that so easily besets us, and let us run with patience the race that lies before us,
2 les yeux fixés sur Jésus, l’auteur et le consommateur de la foi, lui qui, au lieu de la joie qu’il avait devant lui, méprisant l’ignominie, a souffert la croix, et « s’est assis à la droite du trône de Dieu ».
looking to Jesus the author and finisher of the faith, who, for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 Considérez celui qui a supporté contre sa personne une si grande contradiction de la part des pécheurs, afin de ne pas vous laisser abattre par le découragement.
For consider him that endured such opposition of sinners against himself, lest you become weary and despondent in your minds.
4 Vous n’avez pas encore résisté jusqu’au sang dans votre lutte contre le péché.
You have not yet resisted to blood, in your contest with sin;
5 Et vous avez oublié l’exhortation de Dieu qui vous dit comme à des fils: « Mon fils, ne méprise pas le châtiment du Seigneur, et ne perds pas courage lorsqu’il te reprend;
and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as to sons: My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by him.
6 car le Seigneur châtie celui qu’il aime, et il frappe de la verge tout fils qu’il reconnaît pour sien. »
For, whom the Lord loves, he chastens, and scourges every son that he receives.
7 C’est pour votre instruction que vous êtes éprouvés: Dieu vous traite comme des fils; car quel est le fils que son père ne châtie pas?
If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons: for what son is there whose father chastens him not?
8 Si vous êtes exempts du châtiment auquel tous ont part, vous êtes donc des enfants illégitimes, et non de vrais fils.
But if you are without chastisement, of which all are par takers, then are you bastards, and not sons.
9 D’ailleurs, puisque nos pères selon la chair nous ont châtiés et que nous les avons respectés, combien plus nous devons nous soumettre au Père des esprits, pour avoir la vie?
So, then, we have had fathers of our flesh who corrected us, and we reverenced them; shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of our spirits, and live?
10 Quant à ceux-là, c’était pour peu de temps qu’ils nous châtiaient au gré de leur volonté; mais Dieu le fait autant qu’il est utile pour nous rendre capables de participer à sa sainteté.
For they, indeed, for a few days, chastened us as they thought it good; but he chastens us for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.
11 Toute correction, il est vrai, paraît sur l’heure un sujet de tristesse, et non de joie; mais elle produit plus tard, pour ceux qui ont été ainsi exercés, un fruit de paix et de justice.
But no chastisement seems, at the time, to be a matter of joy, but of grief: yet afterward, it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who are exercised by it.
12 « Relevez donc vos mains languissantes et vos genoux défaillants;
Wherefore, lift up the hands that hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees,
13 dirigez vos pas dans la voie droite », afin que ce qui est boiteux ne dévie pas, mais plutôt se raffermisse.
and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned aside; but rather let it be restored to health.
14 Recherchez la paix avec tous, et la sainteté, sans laquelle personne ne verra le Seigneur.
Follow peace with all, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord;
15 Veillez à ce que personne ne manque à la grâce de Dieu; à ce qu’aucune racine d’amertume, venant à pousser des rejetons, ne cause du trouble, et que la masse n’en soit infectée.
taking care, lest any one slight the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness spring up and trouble you, and by this many be defiled;
16 Qu’il n’y ait parmi vous ni impudique, ni profanateur comme Esaü, qui pour un seul mets vendit son droit d’aînesse.
lest there be any lewd person, or profane man, as Esau, who, for a single meal, sold his birthright.
17 Vous savez que, plus tard, voulant obtenir la bénédiction, il fut repoussé, quoiqu’il la sollicitât avec larmes; car il ne put amener son père à changer de sentiments.
For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no means to change his father’s mind, though he sought it earnestly with tears.
18 Vous ne vous êtes pas approchés d’une montagne que la main puisse toucher, ni d’un feu ardent, ni de la nuée, ni des ténèbres, ni de la tempête,
For you have not come to a mountain that may be touched, and that burns with fire, and to blackness and darkness and tempest,
19 ni de l’éclat de la trompette, ni d’une voix si retentissante, que ceux qui l’entendirent supplièrent qu’on ne leur parlât pas davantage;
and to the sound of a trumpet, and to the utterance of words, the hearing of which utterance caused the people to entreat that the word might not be spoken to them again;
20 car ils ne pouvaient supporter cette défense: « Si même une bête touche la montagne, elle sera lapidée. »
for they could not endure that which was commanded, And if even a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned:
21 Et ce spectacle était si terrible que Moïse dit: « Je suis terrifié et tout tremblant! » —
and so terrible was the sight, that even Moses said, I exceedingly fear and tremble.
22 Mais vous vous êtes approchés de la montagne de Sion, de la cité du Dieu vivant qui est la Jérusalem céleste, des myriades qui forment le chœur des anges,
But you have come to Mount Zion, and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels;
23 de l’assemblée des premiers nés inscrits dans les cieux, du juge qui est le Dieu de tous, des esprits des justes parvenus à la perfection,
to the general assembly and church of the first-born, who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the just made perfect,
24 de Jésus, le médiateur de la nouvelle alliance, et du sang de l’aspersion qui parle plus éloquemment que celui d’Abel.
and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than the blood of Abel.
25 Prenez garde de résister à celui qui parle; car si ceux-là n’ont pas échappé au châtiment, qui ont refusé d’écouter celui qui publiait ses oracles sur la terre, combien moins échapperons-nous, si nous le repoussons, quand il nous parle du haut des cieux:
See that you reject not him that speaks: for if they escaped not who rejected that earthly man who gave the oracles, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that is from heaven,
26 lui, dont la voix ébranla alors la terre, mais qui maintenant a fait cette promesse: « Une fois encore j’ébranlerai non seulement la terre, mais aussi le ciel. »
whose voice then shook the earth; but now he has promised, saying, Yet once more I will shake not the earth only, but also the heaven.
27 Ces mots: « Une fois encore », indiquent le changement des choses qui vont être ébranlées comme ayant eu leur accomplissement, afin que celles qui ne doivent pas être ébranlées subsistent à jamais.
And this prophecy, Yet once more, signifies the removing of the things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that the things which can not be shaken may remain.
28 Ainsi, puisque nous rentrons en possession d’un royaume qui ne sera pas ébranlé, retenons fermement la grâce; par elle rendons à Dieu un culte qui lui soit agréable, avec piété et avec crainte.
Wherefore, as we receive a kingdom that can not be shaken, let us have gratitude, by which we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and godly fear:
29 Car notre Dieu est aussi un feu dévorant.
for our God is a consuming fire.
