Genèse 4
1 Adam connut Eve, sa femme; elle conçut et enfanta Caïn, et elle dit: « J’ai acquis un homme avec le secours de Yahweh! »
Now, the man, having come to know Eve his wife, —she conceived and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a Man, even Yahweh!
2 Elle enfanta encore Abel, son frère. Abel fut pasteur de brebis, et Caïn était laboureur.
And she went on to bear his brother, Abel, —and Abel became a feeder of sheep, whereas Cain, was a tiller of the round.
3 Au bout de quelque temps, Caïn offrit des produits de la terre en oblation à Yahweh;
So it came to pass, after certain days, that Cain brought in of the fruit of the ground, a present to Yahweh:
4 Abel, de son côté, offrit des premiers-nés de son troupeau et de leur graisse. Yahweh regarda Abel et son offrande;
Abel, also, even, he, brought in of the firstlings of his sheep, and of their fat, and Yahweh approved of Abel and of his present;
5 mais il ne regarda pas Caïn et son offrande. Caïn en fut très irrité et son visage fut abattu.
but of Cain and his present, he approved not, —and it angered Cain greatly, and his countenance fell.
6 Yahweh dit à Caïn: « Pourquoi es-tu irrité, et pourquoi ton visage est-il abattu?
So then Yahweh said unto Cain, —Wherefore hath it angered thee, and wherefore hath thy countenance fallen?
7 Si tu fais bien, ne seras-tu pas agréé? Et si tu ne fais pas bien, le péché ne se couche-t-il pas à ta porte? Son désir se tourne vers toi; mais toi, tu dois dominer sur lui. »
Shall it not, if thou do right, be lifted up? But if thou do not right, at the entrance a sin-bearer is lying, —Unto thee, moreover, shall be his longing, though, thou, rule over him.
8 Caïn dit à Abel, son frère: « Allons aux champs. » Et, comme ils étaient dans les champs, Caïn s’éleva contre Abel, son frère, et le tua.
And Cain said unto Abel his brother Let us go into the field And it came to pass when they were in the field that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
9 Et Yahweh dit à Caïn: « Où est Abel, ton frère? » Il répondit: « Je ne sais pas; suis-je le gardien de mon frère? »
Then said Yahweh unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said I know not, the keeper of my brother, am, I?
10 Yahweh dit: « Qu’as-tu fait? La voix du sang de ton frère crie de la terre jusqu’à moi.
And he said, What hast thou done? With a voice, the shed-blood of thy brother is crying out to me from the ground,
11 Maintenant tu es maudit de la terre, qui a ouvert sa bouche pour recevoir de ta main le sang de ton frère.
Now therefore, accursed, art thou, —from the ground which hath opened her mouth, to receive the shed-blood of thy brother at thy hand.
12 Quand tu cultiveras la terre, elle ne donnera plus ses fruits; tu seras errant et fugitif sur la terre. »
Though thou till the ground, it shall not go on to give its vigour to thee. A wanderer and a fugitive, shalt thou be in the earth.
13 Caïn dit à Yahweh: « Ma peine est trop grande pour que je la puisse supporter.
And Cain said unto Yahweh—Greater is my punishment than I can bear.
14 Voici que vous me chassez aujourd’hui de cette terre, et je serai caché loin de votre face; je serai errant et fugitif sur la terre, et quiconque me trouvera me tuera. »
Lo! thou has driven me out, this day, from off the face of the ground And from thy face, shall I be hid, So shall I become a wanderer and a fugitive in the earth. And it shall come to pass, whosoever findeth me, will slay me.
15 Yahweh lui dit: « Eh bien, si quelqu’un tue Caïn, Caïn sera vengé sept fois. » Et Yahweh mit un signe sur Caïn, afin que quiconque le rencontrerait ne le tuât pas.
And Yahweh said to him—Not so, whosoever slayeth Cain seven—fold, shall it be avenged. So Yahweh set, for Cain, a sign, that none finding him should smite him.
16 Puis Caïn s’éloigna de devant Yahweh, et il habita dans le pays de Nod, à l’orient d’Eden.
So Cain went forth from the presence of Yahweh, —and dwelt in the land of Nod, eastward of Eden.
17 Caïn connut sa femme; elle conçut et enfanta Hénoch. Et il se mit à bâtir une ville qu’il appela Hénoch, du nom de son fils.
And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived, and bare Enoch, —Now it happened that he was building a city, so he called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
18 Irad naquit à Hénoch, et il engendra Maviaël; Maviaël engendra Mathusaël, et Mathusaël engendra Lamech.
And there was born to Enoch Irad, and, Irad, begat Mehujael, —and Mehujael, begat Methusael, —and Methusael, begat Lamech.
19 Lamech prit deux femmes; le nom de l’une était Ada, et celui de la seconde Sella.
And Lamech took to himself two wives, —the name of the one, was Adah, and, the name of the second Zillah.
20 Ada enfanta Jabel: il a été le père de ceux qui habitent sous des tentes et au milieu de troupeaux.
And Adah bare Jabal, —he, was father of such as dwell in tents, and have cattle;
21 Le nom de son frère était Jubal: il a été le père de tous ceux qui jouent de la harpe et du chalumeau.
and, the name of his brother, was Jubal, —he, was father of everyone handling lyre and flute,
22 Sella, de son côté, enfanta Tubal-Caïn, qui forgeait toute espèce d’instruments tranchants d’airain et de fer. La sœur de Tubal-Caïn était Noéma.
And, as for Zillah, she also, bare Tubal-Cain, a sharpener of every cutting instrument of bronze and iron, —and, the sister of Tubal-Cain, was Naamah.
23 Lamech dit à ses femmes: Ada et Sella, entendez ma voix, femmes de Lamech, écoutez ma parole: J’ai tué un homme pour ma blessure, et un jeune homme pour ma meurtrissure.
Then said Lamech to his wives, Adah and Zillah! hear ye my voice, Ye wives of Lamech! give ear to my tale, For a man, have I slain in dealing my wounds, Yea, a youth, in smiting my blows:
24 Caïn sera vengé sept fois, et Lamech soixante-dix-sept fois.
If, sevenfold, be, the avenging of Cain, Then, of Lamech, seventy and seven.
25 Adam connut encore sa femme; elle enfanta un fils et l’appela Seth, car, dit-elle, « Dieu m’a donné une postérité à la place d’Abel, que Caïn a tué. »
And Adam again knew his wife, and she bare a son, and called his name Seth, —For God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, because Cain slew him!
26 Seth eut aussi un fils, qu’il appela Enos. Ce fut alors que l’on commença à invoquer le nom de Yahweh.
And to Seth—to him also, was born a son, and he called his name Enosh, —then, was a beginning made, to call on the name of Yahweh.
