Esdras 10
1 Pendant qu’Esdras, pleurant et prosterné devant la maison de Dieu, faisait cette prière et cette confession, il s’était réuni auprès de lui une assemblée très nombreuse d’Israélites, hommes, femmes et enfants; car le peuple versait beaucoup de larmes.
Therefore, as Ezra was praying, and imploring, and weeping in this way, and was prostrate before the temple of God, an exceedingly great assembly of men and women and children was gathered to him from Israel. And the people wept with a great weeping.
2 Alors Séchénias, fils de Jéhiel, d’entre les fils d’Elam, prit la parole et dit à Esdras: « Nous avons péché contre notre Dieu en établissant chez nous des femmes étrangères, appartenant à la population du pays. Et maintenant, il reste à cet égard à Israël une espérance.
And Shecaniah, the son of Jehiel, from the sons of Elam, responded and said to Ezra: “We have sinned against our God, and have taken foreign wives from the peoples of the land. And now, if there is repentance within Israel over this,
3 Concluons maintenant une alliance avec notre Dieu, en vue de renvoyer toutes les femmes et les enfants issus d’elles, selon le conseil de mon seigneur et de ceux qui craignent devant les commandements de notre Dieu. Et qu’il soit fait selon la Loi.
let us strike a pact with the Lord our God, so that we may cast aside all the wives, and those who have been born from them, in accord with the will of the Lord, and of those who fear the precept of the Lord our God. So let it be done, according to the law.
4 Lève-toi, car c’est à toi de prendre en main cette affaire. Nous serons avec toi. Courage, et à l’œuvre! »
Rise up. It is for you to discern, and we shall be with you. Be strengthened and act.”
5 Esdras se leva, et il fit jurer aux chefs des prêtres, des lévites et de tout Israël, de faire comme il venait d’être dit; et ils le jurèrent.
Therefore, Ezra rose up, and he caused the leaders of the priests and the Levites, and all of Israel, to swear that they would act in accord with this word. And they swore it.
6 Puis, s’étant retiré de devant la maison de Dieu, Esdras alla dans la chambre de Johanan, fils d’Eliasib; quand il y fut entré, il ne mangea pas de pain et ne but pas d’eau, parce qu’il était dans le deuil à cause du péché des fils de la captivité.
And Ezra rose up before the house of God, and he went away to the chamber of Jehohanan, the son of Eliashib, and he entered into it. He did not eat bread, and he did not drink water. For he was mourning the transgression of those who had arrived from the captivity.
7 On fit passer une proclamation dans Juda et à Jérusalem, pour que tous les fils de la captivité se réunissent à Jérusalem;
And a voice was sent into Judah and Jerusalem, to all the sons of the transmigration, so that they would gather together in Jerusalem.
8 et, d’après l’avis des chefs et des anciens, quiconque n’y serait pas arrivé dans trois jours, aurait tous ses biens confisqués et serait lui-même exclu de l’assemblée des fils de la captivité.
And all those who would not arrive within three days, in accord with the counsel of the leaders and the elders, would have all his substance taken away, and he would be cast out of the assembly of the transmigration.
9 Tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin se rassemblèrent à Jérusalem dans les trois jours; c’était le vingtième jour du neuvième mois. Tout le peuple se tenait sur la place de la maison de Dieu, tremblant à cause de la circonstance, et parce qu’il pleuvait.
And so, all the men of Judah and of Benjamin convened in Jerusalem within three days. This was in the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month. And all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of the sin and the rain.
10 Esdras, le prêtre, se leva et leur dit: « Vous avez péché en établissant chez vous des femmes étrangères, ajoutant ainsi à la faute d’Israël.
And Ezra, the priest, rose up, and he said to them: “You have transgressed, and you have taken foreign wives, so that you added to the offenses of Israel.
11 Et maintenant, confessez votre faute à Yahweh, le Dieu de vos pères, et faites sa volonté; séparez-vous des peuples du pays et des femmes étrangères. »
And now, make confession to the Lord, the God of your fathers, and do what pleases him, and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from your foreign wives.”
12 Toute l’assemblée répondit, en disant d’une voix haute: « À nous d’agir comme tu l’as dit!
And the entire multitude responded, and they said with a great voice: “In accord with your word to us, so let be it done.
13 Mais le peuple est nombreux, et c’est le temps des pluies, et il n’est pas possible de rester dehors; d’ailleurs, ce n’est pas l’affaire d’un jour ou deux, car nous avons commis un grave péché en cette matière.
Yet truly, since the people are many, and it is the time of rain, and we cannot endure standing outside, and this is not a task for one or two days, (for certainly we have sinned greatly in this matter, )
14 Que nos chefs restent donc pour toute l’assemblée; et que tous ceux qui, dans nos villes, ont établi chez eux des femmes étrangères, viennent aux jours qui leur seront fixés, avec les anciens de chaque ville et ses juges, jusqu’à ce qu’on ait détourné de nous le feu de la colère de notre Dieu au sujet de cette affaire. »
let leaders be appointed among the entire multitude. And in all our cities, let those who have taken foreign wives arrive at appointed times, and with them the elders from city to city, and the judges, until the wrath of our God has been averted from us over this sin.”
15 Il n’y eut que Jonathan, fils d’Azahel, et Jaasias, fils de Thécuah, pour combattre cet avis; et Mosollam et Sebéthaï, le lévite, les appuyèrent.
And so Jonathan, the son of Asahel, and Jahzeiah, the son of Tikvah, were appointed over this, and the Levites Meshullam and Shabbethai assisted them.
16 Mais les fils de la captivité firent comme il avait été dit. Esdras, le prêtre, et des hommes, chefs de familles selon leurs maisons, tous désignés par leurs noms, se mirent à part et siégèrent le premier jour du dixième mois pour examiner l’affaire.
And the sons of the transmigration did so. And Ezra, the priest, and the men who were the leaders of the families in the houses of their fathers, and all according to their names, went and sat down, on the first day of the tenth month, so that they might examine the matter.
17 Ils en eurent fini le premier jour du premier mois avec tous les hommes qui avaient établi chez eux des femmes étrangères.
And they made an end with all the men who had taken foreign wives, by the first day of the first month.
18 Parmi les fils des prêtres, il s’en trouva qui avaient établi chez eux des femmes étrangères, savoir: des fils de Josué, fils de Josédec, et de ses frères: Maasias, Eliézer, Jarib et Godolias;
And there were found among the sons of the priests some who had taken foreign wives: From the sons of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and his brothers, Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.
19 ils donnèrent parole de renvoyer leurs femmes et, se déclarant coupables, d’offrir un bélier pour l’expiation de leur faute.
And they swore with their hands that they would cast aside their wives, and that they would offer for their offense a ram from among the sheep.
20 Des fils d’Emmer: Hanani et de renvoyer leurs femmes et, se déclarant coupables, d’offrir un bélier pour l’expiation de leur faute.
And from the sons of Immer, Hanani and Zebadiah.
21 Des fils de Harim: Maasias, Elie, Séméïas, Jéhiel et Ozias.
And from the sons of Harim, Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.
22 Des fils de Phashur: Elioénaï, Maasias, Ismaël, Nathanaël, Jozabed et Elasa.
And from the sons of Pashhur, Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.
23 — Parmi les lévites: Jozabed, Séméï, Célaïas, le même que Célita, Phataïas, Juda et Eliézer.
And from the sons of the Levites, Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah, the same is Kelita, Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.
24 — Parmi les chantres: Eliasib. — Parmi les portiers: Selum, Télem et Uri.
And from the singing men, Eliashib. And from the gatekeepers, Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.
25 Parmi ceux d’Israël: Des fils de Pharos: Réméïas, Jézias, Melchias, Miamin, Eliézer, Melchias et Banaïas;
And out of Israel, from the sons of Parosh, Ramiah, and Izziah, and Malchijah, and Mijamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.
26 des fils d’Elam: Mathanias, Zacharie, Jéhiel, Abdi, Jérimoth et Elie;
And from the sons of Elam, Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Elijah.
27 des fils de Zéthua: Elioénaï, Eliasib, Mathanias, Jérimoth, Zabad et Aziza;
And from the sons of Zattu, Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.
28 des fils de Bébaï: Johanan, Ananie, Zabbaï, Athalaï;
And from the sons of Bebai, Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, Athlai.
29 des fils de Bani: Mosollam, Melluch, Adaïas, Jasub, Saal et Ramoth;
And from the sons of Bani, Meshullam, and Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, and Ramoth.
30 des fils de Phahath-Moab: Edna, Chalal, Banaïas, Maasias, Mathanias, Béséléel, Bennui et Manassé;
And from the sons of Pahath-moab, Adna, and Chelal, Benaiah, and Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh.
31 des fils de Harim: Eliézer, Jesias, Melchias, Séméïas, Siméon,
And from the sons of Harim, Eliezer, Jeshua, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Simeon,
32 Benjamin, Melluch, Samarias;
Benjamin, Malluch, Shemariah.
33 des fils de Hasom: Mathanaï, Mathatha, Zabad, Eliphélet, Jermaï, Manassé, Séméï;
And from the sons of Hashum, Mattenai, Mattettah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, Shimei.
34 des fils de Bani: Maaddi, Amram, Uel,
From the sons of Bani, Maadai, Amram, and Uel,
35 Banaïas, Badaïas, Chéliaü,
Benaiah, and Bedeiah, Cheluhi,
36 Vanias, Merimuth, Eliasib,
Vaniah, Meremoth, and Eliashib,
37 Mathanias, Mathanai, Jasi,
Mattaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasu,
38 Bani, Bennui, Séméï,
and Bani, and Binnui, Shimei,
39 Salmias, Nathan, Adaïas,
and Shelemiah, and Nathan, and Adaiah,
40 Mechnédébaï, Sisaï, Sarai,
and Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai,
41 Ezrel, Sélémiaü, Sémérias,
Azarel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah,
42 Sellum, Amarias, Joseph;
Shallum, Amariah, Joseph.
43 des fils de Nébo: Jéhiel, Mathathias, Zabad, Zabina, Jeddu, Joël et Banaïas.
From the sons of Nebo, Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, and Joel, and Benaiah.
44 Tous ces hommes avaient pris des femmes étrangères, et plusieurs d’entre eux en avaient eu des enfants.
All these had taken foreign wives, and there were among them women who had borne sons.
