Esther 9

1 Au douzième mois, qui est le mois d’Adar, le treizième jour du mois, où devaient s’exécuter l’ordre et l’édit du roi, jour où les ennemis des Juifs avaient espéré dominer sur eux, ce fut le contraire qui arriva, et les Juifs dominèrent sur leurs ennemis.

Now in the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king’s commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have rule over them; whereas it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them;

2 Les Juifs se rassemblèrent dans leurs villes, dans toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus, pour frapper ceux qui cherchaient leur perte, et personne ne put leur résister, car la crainte qu’ils inspiraient s’était répandue chez tous les peuples.

the Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their hurt: and no man could withstand them; for the fear of them was fallen upon all the peoples.

3 Tous les chefs des provinces, les satrapes, les gouverneurs, les fonctionnaires du roi soutinrent les Juifs, car la crainte de Mardochée pesait sur eux.

And all the princes of the provinces, and the satraps, and the governors, and they that did the king’s business, helped the Jews; because the fear of Mordecai was fallen upon them.

4 Car Mardochée était puissant dans la maison du roi, et sa renommée se répandait dans toutes les provinces, car cet homme, Mardochée, allait toujours grandissant.

For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went forth throughout all the provinces: for the man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.

5 Les Juifs frappèrent donc à coup d’épée tous leurs ennemis; ce fut un massacre et une destruction; ils traitèrent comme il leur plut ceux qui leur étaient hostiles.

And the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and with slaughter and destruction, and did what they would unto them that hated them.

6 Dans Suse, la capitale, les Juifs tuèrent et firent périr cinq cents hommes,

And in Shushan the palace the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men.

7 et ils massacrèrent Pharsandatha, Delphon, Esphatha,

And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha,

8 Phoratha, Adalia, Aridatha,

and Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha,

9 Phermestha, Arisaï, Aridaï et Jézatha,

and Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vaizatha,

10 les dix fils d’Aman, fils d’Amadatha, l’ennemi des Juifs. Mais ils ne mirent pas la main au pillage.

the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy, slew they; but on the spoil they laid not their hand.

11 Le jour même, le nombre de ceux qui avaient été tués dans Suse, la capitale, parvint à la connaissance du roi.

On that day the number of those that were slain in Shushan the palace was brought before the king.

12 Et le roi dit à la reine Esther: « Les Juifs ont tué et fait périr dans Suse, la capitale, cinq cents hommes et les dix fils d’Aman; que n’auront-ils pas fait dans le reste des provinces du roi?... Quelle est ta demande? Elle te sera accordée. Quel est ton désir? Il sera accompli. »

And the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be done.

13 Esther répondit: « Si le roi le trouve bon, qu’il soit permis aux Juifs qui sont à Suse d’agir encore demain selon le décret d’aujourd’hui, et que l’on pende au bois des dix fils d’Aman. »

Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do tomorrow also according unto this day’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged upon the gallows.

14 Le roi ordonna de faire ainsi, et l’édit fut publié dans Suse. On pendit les dix fils d’Aman,

And the king commanded it so to be done: and a decree was given out in Shushan; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.

15 et les Juifs qui se trouvaient à Suse, s’étant rassemblés de nouveau le quatorzième jour du mois d’Adar, tuèrent dans Suse trois cents hommes. Mais ils ne mirent pas la main au pillage.

And the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and slew three hundred men in Shushan; but on the spoil they laid not their hand.

16 Les autres Juifs qui étaient dans les provinces du roi se rassemblèrent pour défendre leur vie et obtenir que leurs ennemis les laissassent en repos; ils tuèrent soixante-quinze mille de ceux qui leur étaient hostiles. Mais ils ne mirent pas la main au pillage.

And the other Jews that were in the king’s provinces gathered themselves together, and stood for their lives, and had rest from their enemies, and slew of them that hated them seventy and five thousand; but on the spoil they laid not their hand.

17 Ces choses arrivèrent le treizième jour du mois d’Adar. Les Juifs se reposèrent le quatorzième, et ils en firent un jour de festin et de joie.

[This was done] on the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

18 Les Juifs qui se trouvaient à Suse, s’étant rassemblés le treizième et le quatorzième jour, se reposèrent le quinzième, et ils en firent un jour de festin et de joie.

But the Jews that were in Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth [day] thereof, and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth [day] of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

19 C’est pourquoi les Juifs de la campagne, qui habitent des villes sans murailles, font du quatorzième jour du mois d’Adar un jour de joie, de festin et de fête, où l’on s’envoie des portions les uns aux autres.

Therefore do the Jews of the villages, that dwell in the unwalled towns, make the fourteenth day of the month Adar [a day of] gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.

20 Mardochée écrivit ces choses, et il envoya des lettres à tous les Juifs qui étaient dans toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus, à ceux qui étaient près comme à ceux qui étaient loin,

And Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters unto all the Jews that were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both nigh and far,

21 pour leur enjoindre de célébrer chaque année les quatorzième et quinzième jours du mois d’Adar,

to enjoin them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly,

22 comme étant les jours où ils avaient obtenu d’être laissés en repos par leurs ennemis, et le mois où avaient été changés leur tristesse en joie et leur deuil en jour de fête; on devait donc faire de ces jours des jours de festin et de joie, où l’on s’envoie des portions les uns aux autres, et où l’on distribue des dons aux indigents.

as the days wherein the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.

23 Les Juifs adoptèrent pour usage, ce qu’ils avaient déjà commencé à faire et ce que Mardochée leur écrivit.

And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written unto them;

24 Car Aman, fils d’Amadatha, du pays d’Agag, ennemi de tous les Juifs, avait formé contre les Juifs le projet de les perdre et il avait jeté le PUR, c’est-à-dire le sort, afin de les exterminer et de les détruire.

because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had devised against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them;

25 Mais Esther s’étant présentée devant le roi, celui-ci ordonna par écrit de faire retomber sur la tête d’Aman le méchant projet qu’il avait formé contre les Juifs, et on le pendit au bois avec ses fils.

but when [the matter] came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he had devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head; and that he and his sons should he hanged on the gallows.

26 C’est pourquoi on appela ces jours PURIM, du nom de PUR. Ainsi, d’après tout le contenu de cette lettre, d’après ce qu’ils en avaient eux-mêmes vu et ce qui leur était arrivé,

Wherefore they called these days Purim, after the name of Pur. Therefore because of all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and that which had come unto them,

27 les Juifs établirent et adoptèrent pour eux, pour leurs descendants et pour tous ceux qui s’attacheraient à eux, la coutume irrévocable de célébrer chaque année ces deux jours, selon le rite prescrit et au temps fixé.

the Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to the writing thereof, and according to the appointed time thereof, every year;

28 Ces jours devaient être rappelés et célébrés, de génération en génération, dans chaque famille, dans chaque province et dans chaque ville, et ces jours des PURIM ne devaient jamais être abolis au milieu des Juifs, ni le souvenir s’en effacer dans leur postérité.

and that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perish from their seed.

29 La reine Esther, fille d’Abihaïl, et le Juif Mardochée écrivirent une seconde fois, de la manière la plus pressante, pour confirmer cette lettre sur les PURIM.

Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew, wrote with all authority to confirm this second letter of Purim.

30 On envoya des lettres à tous les Juifs, dans les cent vingt-sept provinces du royaume d’Assuérus: des paroles de paix et de fidélité,

And he sent letters unto all the Jews, to the hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, [with] words of peace and truth,

31 et la recommandation de maintenir ces jours des PURIM au temps fixé, comme le Juif Mardochée et la reine Esther les avaient établis pour eux, et comme ils les avaient établis pour eux-mêmes et pour leurs descendants, avec les jeûnes et leurs lamentations.

to confirm these days of Purim in their appointed times, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined them, and as they had ordained for themselves and for their seed, in the matter of the fastings and their cry.

32 Ainsi l’ordre d’Esther établit ces observances des PURIM, et cela fut écrit dans le livre.

And the commandment of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.
