Esther 4
1 Mardochée, ayant appris tout ce qui se passait, déchira ses vêtements, se revêtit d’un sac et se couvrit la tête de cendre; puis il alla au milieu de la ville en poussant avec force des gémissements amers.
When Mordecai learned of all that had happened, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the middle of the city, wailing loudly and bitterly.
2 Et il se rendit jusque devant la porte du roi; car nulle personne revêtue d’un sac n’avait le droit de franchir la porte du roi.
But he went only as far as the king’s gate, because the law prohibited anyone wearing sackcloth from entering that gate.
3 Dans chaque province, partout où arrivaient l’ordre du roi et son édit, il y eut un grand deuil parmi les Juifs; ils jeûnaient, pleuraient et se lamentaient, et le sac et la cendre servaient de couche à beaucoup d’entre eux.
In every province to which the king’s command and edict came, there was great mourning among the Jews. They fasted, wept, and lamented, and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.
4 Les servantes d’Esther et ses eunuques vinrent lui apporter cette nouvelle, et la reine fut très effrayée. Elle envoya des vêtements à Mardochée pour s’en revêtir, afin qu’il ôtât son sac; mais il ne les accepta pas.
When Esther’s maidens and eunuchs came and told her about Mordecai, the queen was overcome with distress. She sent clothes for Mordecai to wear instead of his sackcloth, but he would not accept them.
5 Alors Esther, ayant appelé Athach, l’un des eunuques que le roi avait placés auprès d’elle, le chargea d’aller demander à Mardochée ce que c’était et d’où venait son deuil.
Then Esther summoned Hathach, one of the king’s eunuchs appointed to her, and she dispatched him to Mordecai to learn what was troubling him and why.
6 Athach se rendit auprès de Mardochée, qui se tenait sur la place de la ville, devant la porte du roi;
So Hathach went out to Mordecai in the city square in front of the king’s gate,
7 et Mardochée lui fit connaître tout ce qui lui était arrivé, et la somme d’argent qu’Aman avait promis de peser pour le trésor du roi en retour du massacre des Juifs.
and Mordecai told him all that had happened to him, including the exact amount of money that Haman had promised to pay into the royal treasury in order to destroy the Jews.
8 Il lui remit aussi une copie de l’édit publié dans Suse en vue de leur extermination, afin qu’il le montrât à Esther, lui apprît tout, et lui commandât de se rendre chez le roi afin de le supplier et de lui demander grâce pour son peuple. Voir l’exhortation de Mardochée à Esther, fragment VI,
Mordecai also gave Hathach a copy of the written decree issued in Susa for the destruction of the Jews, to show and explain to Esther, urging her to approach the king, implore his favor, and plead before him for her people.
9 Athach vint rapporter à Esther les paroles de Mardochée.
So Hathach went back and relayed Mordecai’s response to Esther.
10 Esther donna l’ordre à Athach d’aller dire à Mardochée:
Then Esther spoke to Hathach and instructed him to tell Mordecai,
11 « Tous les serviteurs du roi et le peuple de ses provinces savent que si quelqu’un, homme ou femme, pénètre chez le roi, dans la cour intérieure, sans avoir été appelé, l’unique loi qu’on lui applique porte peine de mort; à moins que le roi, lui tendant son sceptre d’or, ne lui donne la vie. Et moi, je n’ai pas été appelée à aller auprès du roi depuis trente jours. »
“All the royal officials and the people of the king’s provinces know that one law applies to every man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned—that he be put to death. Only if the king extends the gold scepter may that person live. But I have not been summoned to appear before the king for the past thirty days.”
12 Quand les paroles d’Esther eurent été rapportées à Mardochée,
When Esther’s words were relayed to Mordecai,
13 celui-ci lui fit répondre: « Ne t’imagine pas en toi-même que tu échapperas seule d’entre tous les Juifs, parce que tu es dans la maison du roi.
he sent back to her this reply: “Do not imagine that because you are in the king’s palace you alone will escape the fate of all the Jews.
14 Car, si tu te tais maintenant, il surgira d’ailleurs un secours et une délivrance pour les Juifs, et toi et la maison de ton père, vous périrez. Et qui sait si ce n’est pas pour un temps comme celui-ci que tu es parvenue à la dignité royale? »
For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows if perhaps you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
15 Esther fit répondre à Mardochée:
Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai:
16 « Va, rassemble tous les Juifs qui se trouvent à Suse, et jeûnez pour moi, sans manger ni boire pendant trois jours, ni la nuit ni le jour. Moi aussi, je jeûnerai de même avec mes servantes, puis j’entrerai chez le roi, malgré la loi; et si je dois mourir, je mourrai. »
“Go and assemble all the Jews who can be found in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day, and I and my maidens will fast as you do. After that, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish!”

So Mordecai went and did all that Esther had instructed him.
