Deutéronome 7
1 Lorsque Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’aura fait entrer dans le pays dont tu vas prendre possession, et qu’il aura chassé devant toi beaucoup de nations, les Hittites, les Gergéséens, les Amorrhéens, les Chananéens, les Phéréséens, les Hévéens et les Jébuséens, sept nations plus nombreuses et plus puissantes que toi,
'When Jehovah thy God doth bring thee in unto the land whither thou art going in to possess it, and He hath cast out many nations from thy presence, the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations more numerous and mighty than thou,
2 et que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te les aura livrées et que tu les auras battues, tu les dévoueras par anathème, tu ne concluras pas d’alliance avec elles et tu ne leur feras pas grâce.
and Jehovah thy God hath given them before thee, and thou hast smitten them — thou dost utterly devote them — thou dost not make with them a covenant, nor dost thou favour them.
3 Tu ne contracteras pas de mariage avec elles, tu ne donneras pas tes filles à leurs fils, et tu ne prendras pas leurs filles pour tes fils;
'And thou dost not join in marriage with them; thy daughter thou dost not give to his son, and his daughter thou dost not take to thy son,
4 car elles détourneraient de marcher après moi tes fils, qui serviraient d’autres dieux; la colère de Yahweh s’enflammerait contre vous, et il te détruirait promptement.
for he doth turn aside thy son from after Me, and they have served other gods, and the anger of Jehovah hath burned against you, and hath destroyed thee hastily.
5 Mais voici comment vous agirez à leur égard: Vous renverserez leurs autels, vous briserez leurs stèles, vous abattrez leurs aschérim et vous livrerez au feu leurs images taillées.
'But thus thou dost to them: their altars ye break down, and their standing pillars ye shiver, and their shrines ye cut down, and their graven images ye burn with fire;
6 Car tu es un peuple saint à Yahweh, ton Dieu. Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’a choisi pour être son peuple particulier, parmi tous les peuples qui sont sur la face de la terre.
for a holy people [art] thou to Jehovah thy God; on thee hath Jehovah thy God fixed, to be to Him for a peculiar people, out of all the peoples who [are] on the face of the ground.
7 Si Yahweh s’est attaché à vous et vous a choisis, ce n’est pas que vous surpassiez en nombre tous les peuples, car vous êtes le plus petit de tous les peuples.
'Not because of your being more numerous than any of the peoples hath Jehovah delighted in you, and fixeth on you, for ye [are] the least of all the peoples,
8 Mais, parce que Yahweh vous aime et parce qu’il a voulu tenir le serment qu’il avait fait à vos pères, Yahweh vous a fait sortir par sa main puissante et vous a rachetés de la maison de servitude, de la main de Pharaon, roi d’Égypte.
but because of Jehovah's loving you, and because of His keeping the oath which He hath sworn to your fathers, hath Jehovah brought you out by a strong hand, and doth ransom you from a house of servants, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
9 Sache donc que c’est Yahweh, ton Dieu, qui est Dieu, le Dieu fidèle qui garde l’alliance et la miséricorde jusqu’à mille générations, pour ceux qui l’aiment et qui gardent ses commandements.
'And thou hast known that Jehovah thy God He [is] God, the faithful God, keeping the covenant, and the kindness, to those loving Him, and to those keeping His commands — to a thousand generations,
10 Mais il rend la pareille en face à ceux qui le haïssent, en les faisant périr; il ne tarde pas à l’égard de celui qui le hait, et il lui rend la pareille en face.
and repaying to those hating Him, unto their face, to destroy them; He delayeth not to him who is hating Him — unto his face, He repayeth to him —
11 C’est pourquoi tu observeras les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que je te prescris aujourd’hui, en les mettant en pratique.
and thou hast kept the command, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I am commanding thee to-day to do them.
12 Si vous écoutez ces ordonnances, si vous les gardez et les mettez en pratique, en retour Yahweh, ton Dieu, gardera envers toi l’alliance et la miséricorde qu’il a jurées à tes pères.
'And it hath been, because ye hear these judgments, and have kept, and done them, that Jehovah thy God hath kept to thee the covenant and the kindness which He hath sworn to thy fathers,
13 Il t’aimera, te bénira et te multipliera; il bénira le fruit de tes entrailles et le fruit de ton sol, ton blé, ton vin nouveau et ton huile, les portées de tes vaches et les petits de tes brebis, sur la terre qu’il a juré à tes pères de te donner.
and hath loved thee, and blessed thee, and multiplied thee, and hath blessed the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy ground, thy corn, and thy new wine, and thine oil, the increase of thine oxen, and the wealth of thy flock, on the ground which He hath sworn to thy fathers to give to thee.
14 Tu seras béni plus que tous les peuples; il n’y aura chez toi ni homme ni femme stérile, ni bête stérile parmi tes troupeaux.
'Blessed art thou above all the peoples, there is not in thee a barren man or a barren woman — nor among your cattle;
15 Yahweh éloignera de toi toute maladie; il ne t’enverra aucune de ces affections malignes d’Égypte que tu connais; mais il en affligera tous ceux qui te haïssent.
and Jehovah hath turned aside from thee every sickness, and none of the evil diseases of Egypt (which thou hast known) doth He put on thee, and He hath put them on all hating thee.
16 Tu dévoreras tous les peuples que Yahweh, ton Dieu, va te livrer; ton œil sera sans pitié pour eux, et tu ne serviras pas leurs dieux, car ce serait un piège pour toi.
'And thou hast consumed all the peoples whom Jehovah thy God is giving to thee; thine eye hath no pity on them, and thou dost not serve their gods, for a snare it [is] to thee.
17 Que si tu dis dans ton cœur: « Ces nations sont plus nombreuses que moi; comment pourrai-je les chasser? »
'When thou sayest in thine heart, These nations [are] more numerous than I, how am I able to dispossess them? —
18 Ne les crains pas; rappelle à ton souvenir ce que Yahweh, ton Dieu, a fait à Pharaon et à toute l’Égypte:
thou art not afraid of them; thou dost surely remember that which Jehovah thy God hath done to Pharaoh, and to all Egypt,
19 les grandes épreuves que tes yeux ont vues, les miracles et les prodiges, la main forte et le bras étendu, par lesquels Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’a fait sortir: ainsi fera Yahweh, ton Dieu, à tous les peuples dont tu as peur.
the great trials which thine eyes have seen, and the signs, and the wonders, and the strong hand, and the stretched-out arm, with which Jehovah thy God hath brought thee out; so doth Jehovah thy God to all the peoples of whose presence thou art afraid.
20 Yahweh, ton Dieu, enverra même sur eux les frelons, jusqu’à ce que soient détruits ceux qui auront pu échapper et se cacher devant toi.
'And also the locust doth Jehovah thy God send among them, till the destruction of those who are left, and of those who are hidden from thy presence;
21 Tu ne t’effraieras pas à cause d’eux; car Yahweh, ton Dieu, est au milieu de toi, Dieu grand et terrible!
thou art not terrified by their presence, for Jehovah thy God [is] in thy midst, a God great and fearful.
22 Yahweh, ton Dieu, chassera peu à peu ces nations devant toi; tu ne pourras pas les exterminer promptement, de peur que les bêtes sauvages ne se multiplient contre toi.
'And Jehovah thy God hath cast out these nations from thy presence little [by] little, (thou art not able to consume them hastily, lest the beast of the field multiply against thee),
23 Yahweh, ton Dieu, te les livrera, et il jettera parmi elles une grande consternation, jusqu’à ce qu’elles soient détruites.
and Jehovah thy God hath given them before thee, and destroyed them — a great destruction — till their destruction;
24 Il livrera leurs rois entre tes mains et tu feras disparaître leurs noms de dessous les cieux; personne ne tiendra devant toi, jusqu’à ce que tu les aies détruits.
and He hath given their kings into thy hand, and thou hast destroyed their name from under the heavens; no man doth station himself in thy presence till thou hast destroyed them.
25 Vous consumerez par le feu les images taillées de leurs dieux; tu ne convoiteras pas l’argent ou l’or qui est sur elles, et tu ne le prendras pas pour toi, de peur qu’il ne te soit un piège; car il est en abomination à Yahweh, ton Dieu.
'The graven images of their gods ye do burn with fire; thou dost not desire the silver and gold on them, nor hast thou taken [it] to thyself, lest thou be snared by it, for the abomination of Jehovah thy God it [is];
26 Tu n’introduiras pas une chose abominable dans ta maison, afin que tu ne sois pas, comme elle, dévoué par anathème; tu l’auras en horreur extrême, tu l’auras en extrême abomination, car c’est une chose dévouée par anathème.
and thou dost not bring in an abomination unto thy house — or thou hast been devoted like it; — thou dost utterly detest it, and thou dost utterly abominate it; for it [is] devoted.
