Deutéronome 2
1 Changeant de direction, nous partîmes pour le désert, par le chemin de la mer Rouge, comme Yahweh me l’avait ordonné, et nous tournâmes longtemps autour de la montagne de Séïr.
Then we turned around and headed back into the desert on the road that leads to the Red Sea, as the Lord had told me, and we wandered around Mount Seir for a long time.
2 Et Yahweh me dit:
This is when the Lord told me,
3 « Vous avez assez tourné autour de cette montagne; reprenez la direction du nord.
“You have been wandering around this mountain long enough. Go back north,
4 Donne cet ordre au peuple: Vous allez passer sur la frontière de vos frères, les enfants d’Esaü, qui habitent en Séïr. Ils auront peur de vous; mais prenez bien garde
and give these orders to the people: ‘You are going to pass through the territory of your relatives, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be frightened of you, so you need to be very careful.
5 d’avoir des démêlés avec eux, car je ne vous donnerai rien dans leur pays, pas même ce que peut couvrir la plante du pied: j’ai donné à Esaü la montagne de Séïr en propriété.
Don't fight them, for I'm not going to give you any of their land, not even the size of a footprint, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau and it belongs to him.
6 Vous achèterez d’eux à prix d’argent la nourriture que vous mangerez, et vous achèterez d’eux à prix d’argent même l’eau que vous boirez.
Pay them with money for the food you eat and the water you drink.’
7 Car Yahweh ton Dieu t’a béni dans tout le travail de tes mains, il a connu ta marche à travers ce grand désert; voilà quarante ans que Yahweh, ton Dieu, est avec toi: tu n’as manqué de rien. »
Remember that the Lord your God has blessed you in everything you've done. He has looked after you during your journey through this large desert. The Lord your God has been with you for these forty years, and you haven't lacked anything.”
8 Nous passâmes donc à distance de nos frères, les enfants d’Esaü, qui habitent en Séïr, nous éloignant du chemin de l’Arabah, d’Elath et d’Asiongaber; nous nous détournâmes et nous prîmes la direction du désert de Moab.
So we passed by our relatives, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We didn't take the Arabah road from Elath and Ezion-geber. Instead we used the road that goes through the desert of Moab.
9 Yahweh me dit: « N’attaque pas Moab et n’engage pas de combat avec lui, car je ne te donnerai aucune possession dans son pays: c’est aux enfants de Lot que j’ai donné Ar en propriété.
Then the Lord told me, “Don't cause the Moabites any trouble or fight them, for I'm not going to give you any of their land, because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot and it belongs to them.”
10 — Les Emim y habitaient auparavant, peuple grand, nombreux et de haute taille, comme les Enacim.
(A strong and numerous people called the Emim once lived there. They were as tall as the Anakim,
11 Eux aussi sont regardés comme des Rephaïm, de même que les Enacim; mais les Moabites les appellent Emim.
and just like the Anakim, they were also considered as Rephaim, but the Moabites called them Emim.
12 En Séïr habitaient aussi jadis les Horrhéens; mais les enfants d’Esaü les chassèrent et, les ayant détruits de devant eux, ils s’établirent à leur place, comme l’a fait Israël pour le pays qu’il possède et que Yahweh lui a donné. —
Previously the Horites lived in Seir, but the descendants of Esau took over their land. They killed the Horites and settled there, just like Israel did when they occupied the land that the Lord had given them.)
13 Maintenant, levez-vous et passez le torrent de Zared. » Et nous passâmes le torrent de Zared.
Then the Lord told us, “Go and cross over Zered Brook.” So we crossed over Zered Brook.
14 Le temps que durèrent nos marches, de Cadès-Barné au passage du torrent de Zared, fut de trente-huit ans, jusqu’à ce que toute la génération des hommes de guerre eût disparu du milieu du camp, comme Yahweh le leur avait juré.
The time it took for us to travel from Kadesh-barnea to when we crossed over the Brook of Zered was thirty-eight years. By this time the entire generation of warriors had died and were no longer part of the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them would happen.
15 La main de Yahweh fut aussi sur eux pour les détruire du milieu du camp, jusqu’à ce qu’ils eussent disparu.
In fact the Lord worked against them to remove them from the camp, until they were all dead.
16 Lorsque la mort eut fait disparaître tous les hommes de guerre du milieu du peuple,
Once the people's warriors had died,
17 Yahweh me parla, en disant:
the Lord told me,
18 « Tu vas passer aujourd’hui la frontière de Moab, Ar,
“Today you will cross out of Moab at the border near Ar.
19 et tu approcheras des enfants d’Ammon. Ne les attaque pas et n’aie pas de démêlés avec eux, car je ne te donnerai aucune possession dans le pays des enfants d’Ammon: c’est aux enfants de Lot que je l’ai donné en possession.
However, when you get enter Ammonite territory, don't cause them any trouble or fight them for I'm not going to give you any Ammonite land, because I have given it to the descendants of Lot and it belongs to them.”
20 — On regardait aussi ce pays comme un pays de Rephaïm; des Rephaïm y habitaient auparavant, et les Ammonites les appelaient Zomzommim:
(This land was previously considered as the country of the Rephaim who used to live there. However, the Ammonites called them Zamzummites.
21 peuple grand, nombreux et de haute taille, comme les Enacim, Yahweh les détruisit devant les Ammonites, qui les chassèrent et s’établirent à leur place.
They were a strong and numerous people, as tall as the Anakim. But the Lord destroyed them when the Ammonites invaded and drove them out and settled there,
22 C’est ainsi que fit Yahweh pour les enfants d’Esaü qui habitent en Séïr, lorsqu’il détruisit devant eux les Horrhéens; les ayant chassés, ils s’établirent à leur place jusqu’à ce jour.
just as he'd done for the descendants of Esau who lived in Seir when he destroyed the Horites. They drove them out and settled where they used to live, and are still there to this day.
23 De même les Hévéens, qui habitaient dans des villages jusqu’à Gaza, furent détruits par les Caphtorim, qui, étant sortis de Caphtor, s’établirent à leur place. —
The Avvim, living in villages as far away as Gaza, were destroyed by the Philistines, who came from Crete, and settled where they used to live.)
24 Levez-vous, partez et passez le torrent de l’Arnon. Voici que je livre entre tes mains Séhon, roi de Hésebon, Amorrhéens, ainsi que son pays. Commence à t’en emparer, engage le combat avec lui!
Then the Lord told us, “Get up, go and cross the Arnon Valley. Look, I have handed over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, as well as his land. Go and start taking it over, and fight him in battle.
25 Dès aujourd’hui je vais répandre la frayeur et la crainte de ton nom sur tous les peuples qui sont sous tous les cieux, en sorte que, au bruit de ta renommée, ils trembleront et seront dans l’angoisse à cause de toi. »
From this day on, I'm going to make all nations on earth dread you—they will be terrified of you. Because of the news they hear about you they will tremble in terror when you appear.”
26 Du désert de Cademoth, j’envoyai des messagers à Séhon, roi de Hésebon, avec des paroles de paix, lui faisant dire:
Moses told the Israelites, “From the Kedemoth Desert I sent messengers with an offer of peace to Sihon, king of Heshbon, telling him,
27 « Que je puisse passer par ton pays; je suivrai le grand chemin, sans m’écarter ni à droite ni à gauche.
‘Let us pass through your land. We'll stay on the main road and won't turn off either to the right or to the left.
28 Tu me vendras à prix d’argent la nourriture que je mangerai, et tu me donneras à prix d’argent l’eau que je boirai; je ne veux que passer avec mes pieds:
Sell us food to eat and water to drink for money. Just let us pass through on foot,
29 — C’est ce qu’on fait pour moi les enfants d’Esaü qui habitent en Séïr, et les Moabites qui habitent à Ar: — jusqu’à ce que je passe le Jourdain pour entrer dans le pays que Yahweh, notre Dieu, nous donne. »
just like the descendants of Esau living in Seir and the Moabites living in Ar allowed us, until we cross over the Jordan into the country that the Lord our God is giving to us.”
30 Mais Séhon, roi de Hésebon, ne voulut pas nous laisser passer chez lui, car Yahweh, ton Dieu, avait endurci son esprit et rendu son cœur inflexible, afin de le livrer entre tes mains, comme tu le vois aujourd’hui.
But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through, for the Lord your God gave him a stubborn spirit and an obstinate attitude, so the Lord could hand him over to you, as he has now done.
31 Yahweh me dit: « Voici que j’ai commencé de te livrer Séhon et son pays. Commence à le conquérir afin de prendre possession de son pays. »
Then the Lord told me, “Look, I have started handing Sihon and his land over to you. Now you can begin to conquer and take over his land.”
32 Séhon sortit à notre rencontre, avec tout son peuple, pour nous livrer bataille à Jasa.
Sihon and his whole army came out to fight us at Jahaz.
33 Et Yahweh, notre Dieu, nous le livra et nous le battîmes, lui et ses fils, et tout son peuple.
The Lord our God handed him over to us, and we killed him, his sons, and all his army.
34 Nous prîmes alors toutes ses villes et nous dévouâmes par anathème toute ville, les hommes, les femmes et les enfants, sans en laisser échapper un seul.
We also captured all his towns, and set apart for destruction the people of every town: men, women, and children. We didn't leave any survivors.
35 Seulement, nous pillâmes pour nous le bétail et le butin des villes que nous avions prises.
All we took for ourselves was the livestock and plunder from the towns we'd captured.
36 Depuis Aroër qui est sur le bord de la vallée d’Arnon, et depuis la ville qui est dans la vallée, jusqu’à Galaad, il n’y eut pas de ville trop inaccessible pour nous; Yahweh, notre Dieu, nous les livra toutes.
No town had walls too high for us to conquer—from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Valley, the town in the valley, all the way to Gilead. The Lord our God handed them all over to us.
37 Mais tu n’approchas pas du pays des enfants d’Ammon, ni d’aucun endroit qui est sur le bord du torrent de Jaboc, ni des villes de la montagne, ni d’aucun des lieux dont Yahweh, notre Dieu, t’avait défendu de t’emparer.
But you didn't go anywhere near the country of the Ammonites—the area that borders the Jabbok River or the towns of the hill country, or any other place that the Lord our God had placed off limits.
