Actes 26
1 Agrippa dit à Paul: « Tu as la parole pour ta défense. » Alors Paul, étendant la main, se justifia en ces termes:
And Agrippa said to Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth his hand and made his defence:
2 « Je m’estime heureux, roi Agrippa, d’avoir aujourd’hui à me justifier devant toi de toutes les accusations portées contre moi par les Juifs;
I think myself happy, king Agrippa, that I am to make my defence this day before thee concerning all things of which I am accused by the Jews;
3 car tu connais mieux que personne leurs coutumes et leurs controverses. Je te prie donc de m’écouter avec patience.
especially as thou art acquainted with all the customs and questions among the Jews. Wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.
4 Ma vie, dès les premiers temps de ma jeunesse, est connue de tous les Juifs, puisqu’elle s’est passée à Jérusalem, au milieu de ma nation.
My manner of life, then, from my youth, which was from the beginning among my own nation and at Jerusalem, all Jews know:
5 Me connaissant ainsi depuis longtemps, ils savent, s’ils veulent en rendre témoignage, que j’ai vécu en pharisien selon la secte la plus austère de notre religion.
and they know, if they are willing to testify, that from the first, according to the strictest sect of our religion, I lived a Pharisee.
6 Et maintenant je suis mis en jugement parce que j’espère en la promesse que Dieu a faite à nos pères,
And now I stand on trial for the hope of the promise made by God to the fathers,
7 promesse dont nos douze tribus, en servant Dieu sans relâche, nuit et jour, attendent la réalisation. C’est pour cette espérance, ô roi, que les Juifs m’accusent!
which our twelve tribes, earnestly serving God day and night, hope to obtain; concerning which hope, O king, I am accused by Jews.
8 Vous semble-t-il donc incroyable que Dieu ressuscite les morts?
Why is it judged incredible with you if God raiseth the dead?
9 Moi aussi j’avais cru que je devais m’opposer de toutes mes forces au nom de Jésus de Nazareth.
I indeed thought with myself that I ought to do many things in opposition to the name of Jesus the Nazarene.
10 C’est ce que j’ai fait à Jérusalem; j’ai fait enfermer dans les prisons un grand nombre de saints, en ayant reçu le pouvoir des princes des prêtres; et quand on les mettait à mort, j’y donnais mon suffrage.
Which I also did in Jerusalem; and many of the saints did I myself shut up in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.
11 Souvent, parcourant toutes les synagogues et sévissant contre eux, je les ai forcés de blasphémer; et ma fureur allant toujours croissant, je les poursuivais jusque dans les villes étrangères.
And I punished them often in all the synagogues, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I pursued them even to foreign cities.
12 Comme j’allais ainsi à Damas, avec de pleins pouvoirs et un mandat des chefs des prêtres,
And as I was going to Damascus on this business, with authority and a commission from the chief priests,
13 vers le milieu du jour, je vis sur le chemin, ô roi, une lumière venant du ciel, plus éclatante que celle du soleil, resplendir autour de moi et de mes compagnons.
at mid-day, on the road, O king, I saw a light from heaven above the brightness of the sun, shining around me and those who were journeying with me.
14 Nous tombâmes tous par terre, et j’entendis une voix qui me disait en langue hébraïque: Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu? Il te serait dur de regimber contre l’aiguillon. —
And when we had all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking to me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? It is hard for thee to kick against the goads.
15 Qui êtes-vous, Seigneur? m’écriai-je. Et le Seigneur dit: Je suis Jésus, que tu persécutes.
And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus, whom thou persecutest.
16 Mais relève-toi, et tiens-toi ferme sur tes pieds, car je t’ai apparu, afin de te constituer ministre et témoin des choses que tu as vues et de celles pour lesquelles je t’apparaîtrai encore.
But arise and stand upon thy feet; for I have appeared to thee for this purpose, to prepare thee as a minister and a witness both of the things which thou sawest, and of those on account of which I will appear to thee;
17 Je t’ai tiré du milieu de ce peuple et des Gentils auxquels maintenant je t’envoie,
delivering thee from the people, and from the gentiles, to whom I send thee,
18 pour leur ouvrir les yeux, afin qu’ils passent des ténèbres à la lumière, et de la puissance de Satan à Dieu, et qu’ainsi, par la foi en moi, ils reçoivent la rémission des péchés et l’héritage avec les sanctifiés.
to open their eyes that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and an inheritance among the sanctified, by faith in me.
19 Je n’ai donc pas résisté, roi Agrippa, à la vision céleste;
Wherefore, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision;
20 mais d’abord j’ai prêché, à ceux de Damas, puis à Jérusalem, et dans toute la Judée, et parmi les Gentils, le repentir et la conversion à Dieu, par la pratique d’œuvres dignes de la pénitence.
but first to those in Damascus, and Jerusalem, and to all the country of Judaea, and then to the gentiles, I proclaimed that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.
21 Voilà pourquoi les Juifs se sont saisis de moi dans le temple et ont essayé de me faire périr.
For these causes the Jews seized me in the temple, and attempted to kill me.
22 C’est donc grâce au secours de Dieu que je suis resté debout jusqu’à ce jour, rendant témoignage devant les petits et les grands, sans dire autre chose que ce que Moïse et les prophètes ont prédit,
Having, however, obtained help from God, I continue to this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying nothing except those things which the Prophets and Moses said were to come to pass;
23 savoir, que le Christ devait souffrir, et que, ressuscité le premier d’entre les morts, il annoncerait la lumière au peuple et aux Gentils... »
that the Christ should suffer, and that, as first of those raised from the dead, he was to proclaim light both to the people and to the gentiles.
24 Comme il parlait ainsi pour sa défense, Festus dit à haute voix: « Tu déraisonnes, Paul; ton grand savoir égare ton esprit. »
And as he was thus speaking in his defence, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning is making thee mad.
25 « Je ne déraisonne pas, très excellent Festus, répondit Paul; je parle le langage de la vérité et de la sagesse.
But he saith, I am not mad, most noble Festus, but utter words of truth and soberness.
26 Le roi est instruit de ces choses, et je lui en parle librement, persuadé qu’il n’en ignore aucune; car rien de tout cela ne s’est passé dans un coin.
For the king knoweth about these things well; to whom also I speak boldly; for I am persuaded that none of these things is hidden from him: for this was not done in a corner.
27 Crois-tu aux prophètes, roi Agrippa? Je sais que tu y crois. »
King Agrippa, believest thou the Prophets? I know that thou believest.
28 Agrippa dit à Paul: « Peu s’en faut que tu ne me persuades de devenir chrétien.
Then Agrippa said to Paul, With little effort thou thinkest to persuade me to become a Christian.
29 « Qu’il s’en faille de peu ou de beaucoup, repartit Paul, plût à Dieu que non seulement toi, mais encore tous ceux qui m’écoutent en ce moment, vous fussiez tels que je suis, à l’exception de ces chaînes! »
And Paul said, I would to God, that with little effort or with great, not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, might be made such as I am, except these bonds.
30 Alors le roi se leva, et avec lui le gouverneur, Bérénice et toute leur suite.
And the king rose up and the governor and Bernice, and those who sat with them;
31 S’étant retirés, ils se disaient les uns aux autres: « Cet homme n’a rien fait qui mérite la mort ou la prison. »
and going aside they talked with each other, saying, This man is doing nothing deserving death, or bonds.
32 Et Agrippa dit à Festus: « On pourrait le relâcher, s’il n’en avait pas appelé à César. »
And Agrippa said to Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed to Caesar.
